It's easy to point the blame at management and to a certain extent I can see why this is the case. Leitrim had some great goal chances and missed everyone of them. NY looked as fit as Leitrim which shouldn't be the case as they have no preparation time with games so I would question the S&C. The biggest problem and I have yet to see it mentioned here is that we have a man over coaching in this county for the last I'd say 20 odd years and bar 1 game in u21s v Galway we have been hammered at every level u17/18 u20/21 the book stops With him. Keith Berine is the only player that can use both feet confidently. Look at the other counties around us and see the main coaching officer he is hands on and pro-active and instilling belief in young men. Our man wouldn't be able to run a coaching session with 20 9 year olds. It's a joke and that has to change. The current Leitrim u20 manager made a shambles of the Leitrim senior job when he had it so the county board decide to give him the u20 job his own club wouldn't even have him coaching. So to blame everything on Andy Moran he's only in the door 2 years is wrong. A result like this has been brewing for years and until there is a complete over haul in coaching in the county we will always be in this position. A disastrous result for Leitrim… I think Andy Moran should be removed immediately and someone local put in place for the upcoming Taltainn Cup games.. A new voice would give what must be a shell shocked panel of players a much needed lift… The panel and management will have to carry this burden of been New York's first victims for the rest of their lives.. It won't be easy for them… but immediate action must be taken by the County Board. ForeverBlue2 (Cavan) - Posts: 1617 - 09/04/2023 11:43:23 2469709 Link 1 |

First of all congrats to new york, 25 years of plugging away they finally got their win. sparkie (Leitrim) - Posts: 48 - 09/04/2023 12:06:08 2469721 Link 1 |
It is awful disappointing to see Leitrim beaten in New York, I'd have a grá for my close neighbours. But it is massively unfair to expect ye to play New York with your population size and resources. NY can transfer in players from every county and also players from other cities in America (Carthy came over from Boston). It is the equivalent of some of this country's biggest town playing them. I couldn't see Blanchardstown or Navan getting a result over there. This again highlights the total unfairness of the championship. I hope ye give the Tailteann cup a good rattle. Delighted for New York. Very entertaining match. Leitrim had plenty of chances to win but NY were gritty and hung in there. It was bound to happen eventually as NY ran Sligo very close and gave Galway headaches in the past too. Jet lag and the time difference probably didn't do Leitrim any favors either. Huge crowd at the match and the pubs were packed watching it! Great to see. Hard luck to Leitrim. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 1963 - 09/04/2023 12:26:52 2469733 Link 0 |
Hopefully NY beat sligo simply for the fact it would cost the gaa a fortune! They'd be in three all Ireland qualifiers after the final. This would be a good thing. somewouldargue (Leitrim) - Posts: 52 - 09/04/2023 12:28:20 2469734 Link 0 |
As a Galway man I just want to say hard luck but Galway were run uncomfortably close over in New York around 10-12 years ago. Padraic Joyce saved us very very late. It was so tight that the rules changed the following year to allow the loser into the qualifiers, it was previously just a given that New York would lose and that was that for them and the championship. jam83 (Galway) - Posts: 111 - 09/04/2023 12:29:03 2469735 Link 1 |
It's like the aftermath of a funeral. A sobering experience. Might as well enjoy the rest of the time over here.

Nice thought, but Sligo will be prepared for New York the next day. I have sympathy for the Leitrim players after an upset like yesterday. Good luck in the Tailtean Cup.

Well done New York fully deserved. I called this result after the Sligo or Laois game. The level of our conditioning is unacceptable. 3rdmidfielder (Australia) - Posts: 239 - 09/04/2023 12:51:40 2469747 Link 0 |
Wont help football in Leitrim though.

It won't but that's besides the point. If there was a division five we'd be in it. We are in bad auld fettle today. We have good people not involved in clubs that could teach young lads a thing or two because it's far too much hassle to get involved with parents hovering etc Down the line rural clubs will struggle to field teams with emigration, planning laws crippling the county etc. Ya can't put a sitka spruce in goals, although it might not he a bad idea! And yet ya just have to look at Fermanagh and what they do and what they work with, far less than us, and there's no moaning there about their lot. They get on with it and improve without fuss. There's a lesson there. somewouldargue (Leitrim) - Posts: 52 - 09/04/2023 13:01:27 2469753 Link 1 |
That New York team is decent. Some very good players. Not much between the teams. TheRock2121 (Donegal) - Posts: 1049 - 09/04/2023 13:17:00 2469762 Link 0 |

NY had several homegrown players on the team. The only big stars were Johnny Glynn, a former Galway hurler, and the Dub All-Ireland winner who was born and raised in NY and now lives there. He only moved to Ireland in his teens.

Not true, in the New York 15 they had only 4 home grown players and 9 or 10 players with inter county experience. Most the subs they got on had previous intercounty experience too.
