The Hyde would ideal venue for the Mayo v Kildare game. Imagine 20k plus in town next weekend, but alas we are 10 years at the planning stage to do it up, what's another 10

Agree that I wouldn'd start Murray. Conor Hussey is worth his place. Richard Hughes should start. I don't know if McCormack is good enough. Management don't seem to think so. Unfortunately, I think we'll struggle to defend against good forwards. We've drawn Clare which is as good a draw as we could have hoped for but we've had trouble with Clare before. Posters here have talked about Mayo being strong in the tackle and they are. As I understand it, Mayo with Donie Buckley put huge work into improving tackling. They broke the tackle down into component parts and worked on each part to get improvement. Anthony Cunningham has been Roscommon Manager for 4 years. During that time, there has been no improvement whatsoever in Roscommon's defending. Do we even have a defensive coach. Poor defending is killing this Roscommon team. We've improved in midfield and we have good forwards and scored 2.16 even on a bad day in Salthill. We must improve our defence. Kerry have been poor at the back but seem to have tightened considerably in defence since Jack O'Connor returned as Manager. It can be done. Roscommon will go nowhere while we can't defend.

Interesting suggestion roscommon 1944 for your proposed six backs. Eoin McCormack and Richard Hughes who you have included, have both played very well during the league and must be pushing very hard for selection at the moment. Niall Daly and David Murray who you have not included, have both been great servants for Roscommon, but have had a very long season with Pearses and therefore have probably not been playing to their full potential. It is a difficult call for management and it could go either way, depending how they are performing on the training field.

Good draw this morning (Clare) which gives us a great chance to get into the quarter finals. Presume the match will be in Portlaoise of Tullamore and hopefully the Rossies will bring another huge crowd of supporters.

Three things that need attention from the GAA going forward:
1. All matches at this stage should be played on pitches with nets behind the goals. In is annoying to see the supporters of teams which are ahead late in a game, holding on to the balls behind the goals and waiting for the opposition keeper to kick out, before throwing the second ball back on to the field to waste time. A couple of ball boys should also be placed on both sides of the goal to collect / return the balls.

2. When a player is issued with a black card, it is very obvious that teams have be instructed to fake injury in order to run down the clock. This time delay / injury time should not be included in the 10 minutes allocated for the black card.

3. Several subs recently on entering the play, immediately remove their mouth guards and place them in their socks when play has resumed. Other players have been booked for not wearing mouth guards. Some consistency is needed.

A better draw than getting Mayo or Armagh but we need to get our act together or it'll be an early championship exit. Clare have a bit of momentum and will not fear Roscommon who hopefully won't buckle under the favourites tag. Clare have a strong midfield but our midfield should be able to give them a good battle after doing so well against Galway. As been repeated multiple times now the main priority is tightening up at the back.

Jesus this really shows up the structure off the championship. If we win next weekend we will only have had to beat Sligo and Clare to get to last 8. Not saying we will make last 8 because let's remember Clare are on a winning streak now and will be hard stopped.. all depends on where our heads are at . The last time was it 2016 when Clare beat us at the same stage we only had 6 days to get over the hammering Galway gave us so there will be no excuses next weekend. Need to play at our best level and being massive intensity to the game. Watching Armagh yesterday and to see the difference in intensity and speed they play was an eye opener. We need to get a win next weekend and be competitive in last 8 whoever we play then people might take us a bit more serious next year. If we don't win then that's another disappointing year and another year wasted for these Roscommon footballers who aren't getting any younger

I hope you are correct on the venue but I fear it could be the worst place stadium in Ireland....Salthill.

You can really tell Mayo worked on that. Why haven't Roscommon managed to get someone in to do the same. It was really highlighted in the hammering we received from Mayo in the Croke Park replay in 2017 and again in Super 8 defeats in subsequent years. Cunningham in fairness did seem to give us better defensive shape in 2019 but we were still were poor in the skill of tackling.

Strange post. Are you lamenting the fact that you only have to beat Clare to get to the last 8 ???? Would you prefer to have gotten Armagh and lose?. The top 4 teams are not yet in the draw . Incidentally I would only give you a 50/50 chance. Clare are tough.

No I have massive respect for both Clare and Sligo. Clare could beat us but win two games and you are in last 8.

It sounded like he was just making an observation on the structure of the championship and how a quarter final can be potentially reached by beating only two teams, neither of which are a top tier team. I didn't pick up any hint of lamenting avoiding the bigger two teams. He said Clare would be tough and that Roscommon are by no means guaranteed to win.

On a defensive coach Poacher was brought in and because of Covid only got to work with the lads for a couple of months. Jumped ship because of the criticism that was thrown at him both locally and nationally.

Current coaches are simliar to what we had under McStay. Front foot/forward minded. Pundits and local journalists reckons it's us playing to our strengths. Until that nonsense mindset changes we will not be reaching the last 4 of the All-Ireland series any time soon.

I agree with you. Definitely roscommon have the forwards to compete but the defence is atrocious. However i feel that the forwards dont work hard enough when without the ball. The opposition defences can attack and create overlaps which makes it very difficult for the defence to cope.

I think I'd like to see the following line out the next day;
Lavin
Hughes
Stack
C Daly
Hussey
N Daly
R Daly
Nolan
Harney
Kilroy
C Murtagh
E Smith
McKeon
D Smith
D Murtagh

Use Kilroy as a sweeper and Heneghan and Cox as impact subs. I would like to see Heneghan start but you can't sacrifice Enda or Ciaran Murtagh and Cian McKeon has pace we need up front as well. Someone made the point of Niall Daly having played a lot of minutes this year. Don't know if we have the luxury to rest players at this stage.

Maybe this has been answered before but where is Hubert Darcy at the moment?

Defending in modern football is a team game. When for example Donie Buckley was involved with Mayo he first learned the forwards how to tackle, press and turnover.

You need serious work rate plus strength and conditioning to keep that type of game going for 70 minutes.

So Croke Park 3:45pm on a Saturday when it would have made more sense to play it Sunday in Salthill,O'Connor Park or O'Moore park but of course HQ chosen the minor QFS for the latter two venues.

Yes that is what I mean- I do not think Roscommon forwards work/tackle hard enough thereby putting undue pressure on the backs

Few off our forwards were absolutely wrecked midway through second half against Galway. Donie Smith looked like a man ready to fall and I don't think he put in a massive shift. You would wonder did we over do training days before game because the players didn't look sharp and they weren't moving great. What will attendance by Saturday with two games? Will we see 30,000
