Congrats to St Kevin's, a great run by Monivea-Abbey but for smallish clubs to win provincial titles, you really have to have your talisman in action and poor Cillian McDaid's loss has eventually caught up with them. How they were good enough to go this far without him is a credit to their club. To get this close to winning Connacht intermediate without a guy who was 1 of 3 players nominated for footballler of the year in '22 - alongside David Clifford and Shane Walsh - is admirable. Castlerea just wouldn't have handled a Monivea-Abbey team with McDaid driving it, I've zero doubt about that. But you have to play what's on the field on the day and they got over the line so best of luck to them. Hope to see McDaid back soon. Galway badly need him.

@anotheralias can you point out where I was gloating? I gave a balanced a fair post and you chose to respond in that manner is a bit bizarre. The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 3925 - 27/11/2023 19:27:16 2514790 Link 1 |
Intermediate Connacht titles has been won by 8 clubs fron Galway and Roscommon 6. Five of the last 6 Connacht Intermediate finals has been between the Galway and Roscommon champions. At county level Roscommon v Galway championship games in recent years have been competitive with goals scored at key stages in games the deciding factors. Since 2016 there has been 5 Connacht finals between the two with Galway winning 3 and Roscommon 2. Even league and FBD encounters in that time scale has been well contested with wins shared. It's a healthy and strong rivalry between two Div 1 neighbour counties and should continue into 2024. Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 266 - 27/11/2023 19:41:50 2514791 Link 2 |
Specifying Connacht finals and specifying exactly 8 seasons ago is extreme cherrypicking. Someone could just as easily say that Roscommon have beaten Galway in championship a total of twice in 22 years Back in real-time, the last 3 championship wins have been by Galway and none of the scorelines have been particularly close PressureKick (UK) - Posts: 241 - 28/11/2023 14:04:23 2514875 Link 0 |
I think that clubs have copied on and are not panicking by getting a manager for the sake of it, there is a lot of guys on the circuit that has won nothing at all or goes in and puts the club backwards, I think the standard of coaching and managers out there is a hell of a lot better than before, I think clubs that do any research at all nine times out of ten it works out fairly well for them some clubs just go for names and never works out at all, our club went for an outside manager a good few years ago and it worked out well for us! Sometimes clubs do not have the resources or high quality coaches that is needed to be successful, as far as bleeding clubs dry that is the clubs fault not the coaches just my opinion,

Anyone know how NUIG football is going. I hear that Tommy Goals and Ryan O Donoghue are playing for the NUIG footballers. Also Cathal Sweeney is still there as well. LottoPlus (Kilkenny) - Posts: 85 - 28/11/2023 17:08:06 2514909 Link 0 |
It's no cherry picking never mind extreme. its the factual info on rivalry between the two counties since 2016. 5,3,4 was the margin of victory for Galway in the last three Championship games and it took added time point from Comer to be sure of the win in the last match. Should they meet in the Connacht final or All Ireland series in 2024 it will highly likely be a well contested competitive game.

Clubs sometimes have no option but to go outside as no one within the club will take it on. Jellybaby (Dublin) - Posts: 357 - 28/11/2023 17:46:42 2514919 Link 0 |
Tommy "Goals" Conroy (Is from Kiltane), lads not fact checking incorrectly attributes the nickname to the Neale player that you may be talking about here who plays for Mayo senior team.

So it's the night of the galway county final. Corofin have beaten moycullen. A corofin man drives to moycullen and goes into a pub. Nobody is discussing the game. in disgust he decides to broach the subject with the locals. " what did ye think of the game lads, great game but corofin deserved to win"" . I would call that gloating if it happened.. Would you not?

Sorry now but that's very easy for you to say considering you are part of a club who is competing for Senior titles year on year and are used to provincial and even All-Ireland runs Most clubs may not see that for years, decades or even ever at any level. My club were lucky enough to get to one provincial final and lost after extra time, something we still regret years later. I was sorely disappointed for Monivea/Abbey, they had never been in a provincial final before and it would have gone in their history if they had won it. (Which also backs up my last point) Not.A.Quelly (Galway) - Posts: 95 - 29/11/2023 09:12:24 2514957 Link 4 |
I would agree with this totally, and in most clubs if they stick with a local fella there is nearly almost a lot of favouritism or retaliation getting the nod where they shouldn't be, who are the best young managers and coaches in your opinion??

I am a great admirer of Corofin but this comment is a poor one there are loads of clubs who would love to win at Connacht level we all can't be were corofin are, you should act like your players or ex players humble and respectful, you are letting your club name down there,

No I would not. If I went into a pub and had a chat with a few locals I'd get a more respectful answer matter of fact I wouldn't need to ask as the match would already be getting well discussed.

That's nonsense. Many myself included with no involvement will be watch a provincial final whatever the grade. To win that title is plenty to be fussed about and loads of clubs haven't won a provincial honours all aren't like your own Corofin.

Tough for people to coach senior team in they're own club. Outside coaches if good can be a good solution. James Mannion and Eoin Mooney are up there in my opinion. Mooney was in my club in Westmeath for a few years. Lives in Ballygar I think. Players did not want him to leave Mannion has been coaching in Leitrim too I think and involved in Galway development squads. Enjoy listening to him on maroon podcast I will be in Hyde on Sunday.
