The challenge of an ancient game Brought glory, glory to your name Though March winds blew the crowds still came To watch you gentle hero. In life's long march you made us proud And many a voice from out the crowd Called out your name aloud, aloud An echo still resounding. And Blackstairs men who saw you then Still speak of you in awe, On Carman's green where you had been They tell of what they saw, We watched you on September fields And lightning was the drive You were the one Cuchulainn's son in 1955. The hand that held the stick of ash, And the man who led with style and dash, Oh! Carrigtwohill once felt the crash And Bennettsbridge and Thurles. And when in later life you beat The devil on that lonely street You showed us how to take defeat With dignity and courage. The last parade was sad and slow The last oration spoken low And as, on green fields long ago The Diamond stood beside you Old friends they flanked you side by side And the tears they shed were tears of pride An ash tree toppled when you died And scattered seeds at random. Was there big games in Carrigtwohill and Bennettsbridge back in the 50s?

You are tilting it a bit there LRH. Serious contenders or pretenders yes, but Champions elect- that was only in Derek McGraths' eyes.

Bennettsbridge were the top hurling club in Kilkenny during the 1950s & 60s. In a 16 year period between 1952 and 1967 they won 10 senior hurling titles and were runners-up 3 times. Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2866 - 26/05/2022 13:13:54 2420335 Link 0 |

I think that was a bit of poetic licence on the songwriter's part. Unless Rackard hurled there in colleges games or tournament games or the like. Wexford certainly didn't play any big games in either place anyway.

Carrigtwohill didn't win much in the 50s and 60s though they were senior for most of that time. Daly and Fuohy won several all Ireland titles with Cork and would both have played against Nicky numerous times.

Why don't you give it a rest and show some modesty like most of the posters on here. In Waterford no one thought we were champions elect and and If you were around in our county since 1963 you know what not to take for granted. I don't begrudge Clare any success and won't degrade them if and when they lose. Waterford or anyone else has not a god given rights to win All-Irelands. There are counties working their socks off keeping the sport going and never get the lime light. I for one appreciate them. Sorry Wexford thread but could not let that vile go that is present in all his postings. Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 3162 - 26/05/2022 14:15:04 2420355 Link 0 |
It was a joke that clearly flew over your head. I was referring to Derek McGraths promotion of Waterford as champions elect and making light of that. You need to relax a little. LohansRedHelmet (Clare) - Posts: 2697 - 26/05/2022 14:23:29 2420358 Link 0 |
hence the ; ) (wink) at the end of my post. I was being sarcastic. Anyone who has read my posts since the start of the championship knows I took exception to the promotion of Waterford as second in line and scoffed at the neck of Derek McGrath's comments pre championship. I am only making a joke about that. LohansRedHelmet (Clare) - Posts: 2697 - 26/05/2022 14:26:11 2420359 Link 0 |
In fairness to Canuck he described DMG as a clown at the time.

In fact Mcgrath in all his stupidity may still be correct. Limerick, Cork and Clare beat Waterford and one of them may go up the steps to collect the cup.

Any one who reads your posts can see you take exception to any credit for Waterford based on nothing only bias. Anyway forward to the teams who deservedly are still in the championship. Since its is a Wexford thread good luck to them going forward. My colours will be nailed to the Limerick post but no begrudging Wexford or Clare either. We are not in the conversation as we were not good enough.

They can't all go up the steps at the same time though! And the only reason that list isn't longer is that you didn't play anyone else only Tipp who were even worse than Waterford in this years championship.

More nonsense. How can you say that I "take exception to any credit for Waterford based on nothing only bias". Explain to me why I am biased? Since the outset of this championship when it comes to Waterford I have simply stated that they are overrated, that league form should count for nothing and I expected Clare to beat Waterford at home. My opinion was based on the fact that Waterford were being overhyped based on league form which consistently has been proven to be an incorrect measurement of how the championship will go. I also said it was crazy for people to claim Waterford as a top 2 team in Ireland and Clare as 5th in Munster given we beat Waterford in the championship last year and have elite players like Shane O Donnell and Peter Duggan (although even I didn't think Peter would be as good as he has been) back in the team. I simply could not understand how people perceived there to be a sudden chasm in quality between Waterford and Clare when we won the last championship game between the two counties. My arguments have nothing to do with bias, I have no more ill feeling towards Waterford than anyone else, my arguments were based on a pure logical thought process which might I add has been proven 100% accurate.
