2022 Wexford Intercounty Hurling

Here's another stat for you ... and I took this from Colm Keyes, Irish Independent Writer's twitter account.
"Wexford's transformation against Kilkenny in last six years quite something.
9 wins, 1 draw now from 15 meetings in all senior competitions since '17.
In Kilkennys great years, no one suffered more punishment than Wexford."

As Tiger said, it's about the present and looking forward.

Again taking the "Bible" as the bible, if you know what I mean....

We've only actually played them in the championship in Wexford Park four times. The record is:
1949 - lost
2011 - lost
2017 - won
2019 - drew

Prior to that, most home games v Kilkenny in the championship were actually in New Ross. The record there wasn't great, but that reflects Wexford's relatively low standing of the time, compared to Kilkenny. Wexford lost seven times to Kilkenny there over the years (1917, 1919, 1920, 1921, 1931, 1942, and 1946) and won only once (1944).

Interesting to note too that between 1951 (v Meath in Bellefield) and 2009 (v Offaly in Wexford Park), Wexford actually only had two home games in the championship: 1977 first round v Kildare, and 1980 first round v Dublin.

Basically, from about 1950 until the advent of the round-robin championships in 2017, just about all Leinster Championship matches were played at neutral venues. So, talk of "first time to beat them on their home ground since ....." doesn't hold as much sway in Leinster as it does in Munster, as not many matches were played at either county's home ground anyway.

The huge support Wexford had in the 50s, 60s and 70s meant that Croke Park was the only ground big enough since around 1950.

We beat Dublin in the 1954 Leinster final at Nowlan Park.

Kilkenny and Dublin played a few Leinster finals in Wexford Park around the same time. Plenty of trains back then!

Replying To foreveryoung:  "Is this accurate? I just read Liam Sheehy's article in the Cork Examiner. Surely, last Saturday was not Wexford's first time beating Kilkenny in Nowlan Park in senior championship hurling?

" He and his team had left themselves an uphill battle but deserve enormous credit for delivering when the need was greatest. Especially in Nowlan Park where they'd never won before in championship.""
I assume that he means against Kilkenny, I remember beating Waterford there in championship hurling and I'm not that old.

True too. And now they are probably regretting closing all the railways with the green agenda centre stage.

Did we play Kilkenny anywhere else other than Croke Park in the championship back then though?

A pain I remember all too well.

01 hammered,
02 the better side and lost
03 all going great up to half time. Hammered
04 legends were born
05 better side and lost

06,07,08 are a blur. Brilliant moments but they'd turn it on for a 10 minutes burst and hit you for about 15 points before you knew it

I see we got 3 players on the gaa.ie hurling team of the week.
Ryan, Reck and o'keeffe.
Not bad but surely Chin was more than worthy of a place.
Maybe I'm being greedy but after last Saturday 4 would be realistic.

Those were the days. My father-in-law used to take a mini bus load of supporters to these games. I love my Munster hurling but these games were hard to match. You did not have a clue from year to year which way it would go. I was probable the only one rooting for Wexford and lucky not to be strangled.

Greedy is right. After Clare beating the champions elect we should have had 15 on the team ; )
