Why Mayo Cant Win An All-Ireland

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Tyrone are well capable of winning again next year but I expect Dublin and Kerry to be a lot better in 2022,
whatever new Championship structure comes in will be interesting,
Ulster will be dog eat dog next year, anyone of 4 teams in with a real chance, Kerry Dublin and Mayo will win the other provinces easily again imo.

There was embarrassment in some circles in Leinster re KK's total dominance and also a realisation that KK needed stronger competition as preparation for an AISF and AIF.
The 10 years before Galway came into Leinster:
KK won 9 out of the 10 Leinsters. Wexford won the other!
Dublin won no Leinster in hurling from 1961-2013.
The last time Dublin won an All Ireland in hurling was 1938. And they berate Mayo's record in the football!
Laois won their All Ireland in 1915!

In the last 20 years, 5 Munster teams have contested at least one All-Ireland.
Only 1 team from Leinster and 1 team from Connacht have done so.
I rest my case! This is for another thread Viking."
Agree it's for another thread Baire. And agree that it wasnt competitive for most of the noughties. But then Kilkenny had one of the best hurling teams ever during the period you quoted. They would probably have won most of the Munster titles in that period if they had played in Munster with that team. But you were saying it's no good as a competition right now and likening it to the Leinster and Munster football championships as a competition. It wouldnt be a shock for any one of 4 teams to win the LSHC next year. It would be a huge shock if Kerry and Dublin dont win their respective provincial football titles next year.
Going back on thread Connacht is by no means a certainty. Roscommon and Galway might win it. With the panel Mayo have now, and looking at their team and the subs they brought on in the final against Tyrone, the back door would be a treacherous route for them. I dont think they have 6 starting forwards who are good enough, certainly dont have forwards good enough on the bench, and if they suffered another key injury like they did this year they will find it hard to score enough to beat any of the other top 5/6 counties, let alone beat 2 or 3 of them consecutively to bring home Sam.

Ulster championship will be absolutely brilliant next year, theres only a kick of the ball between any one of tyrone/donegal/Mon/derry/cavan/armagh on a given day

It usually is and we get great coverage and analysis from the BBC of all places, the draw as always is crucial, hope we can avoid Tyrone until the final if we both get that far. That would be the ideal time to meet them for me, win Ulster and beat the All Ireland Champions in the process.

Other than for Dublin they do not seem to be able to beat anyone in the final and are easily outplayed. The provincial structure does not help them in any way whatsoever.

I couldn't disagree with most of your points there Viking. Yes, the Leinster hurling Championship is more open and the Connacht football championship is still competitive. I enjoyed going to Wexford Park and welcoming Wexford supporters to Pearse Stadium. Lets hope there will be much more of it in the coming years.

You are underestimating mayo to the extreme if you think they might go out in the qualifiers.

Mayo had mark moran, O'connor and Doherty injured this season. And they still made the final beating 2 top 6/7 teams.

Mayo also despite missing a penalty were only 2 points off what kerry scored in normal time against tyrone.

Mayo do not have bad forwards. When O'connor is healthy there's at most 3 counties with better forwards.

So you think you absolutely cant lose to 3 of Donegal, Tyrone, Armagh, or Monaghan who you could well meet in the Qualifiers? Noone can say you lack confidence anyway! And you rank Galway in the top 6 or 7 this year based on what? League form?

I can't see mayo loosing conought next year. And mayo are better than all the counties you mentioned but tyrone and would likely beat all of them but tyrone.

And galway based of championship form are arguably top 6 they've just had the bad luck of loosing to a top 4 team each of the last 4 years. When you compare it donegal and monaghan loosing to cavan they are a top 6/7 team.

In the last 4 years they beat Roscommon in the 2018 final but lost the other 3 to you and Roscommon. In 2021 and 2020 they never got out of Connacht. In 2019 they lost to yourselves and Roscommon. And beat no Ulster team. In 2018 they beat Roscommon, then beat a poor Kerry team and Kildare in the super8s. Lost by double scores to Monaghan before getting hammered by Dublin. Still beat no Ulster team. I would have Mayo as a top 4 team ok but Monaghan and Roscommon arent. Monaghan are probably a top 6 or 7 team. Roscommon probably like Galway a top 10 championship team.

what poor Kerry team? lol That was a solid Galway performance, I agree with most of what you said however.

They were lucky/did well to scrape a last minute draw v Monaghan and failed to get out of the Super 8s.
And if that wasn't hinting at them being a poor Kerry team been beaten by Galway is surely conclusive evidence!

you sound like an atom (you make up everything). Galway were the first county in the history of the super 8 to advance to a semi-final in 2018. They lost to Dublin. That was a good team the Dubs had.

Jasus Tyrone were lucky if the All Ireland football final was played on its usual day Mayo would have won

Fair enough - anyone can misread or misinterpret a post.
What I struggle with is the posters who read your misinterpretation of / response to my post and think " By Golly , svp made a good point there - thats worth an uptick "
Recently I responded to a post in a similar situation merely because it had 3 upticks. Otherwise I would have shrugged and said - well the guy obviously misread, no biggie.
And the last line of my argument was (jokingly) begging the question. Not that I don't stand over it.

& @ cluichethar.
I caught the match and interviews at the end on the TG4 football coverage today.
While I don't believe in the particular curse you referenced I have to say - he looked fit & well, Mayo aren't out of the woods yet!!

Doherty has been out injured for over two years now, I don't think you can count him as a loss any more given that he's been out for so long. Same goes for Brendan Harrison even though he made a cameo this year against the Dubs.
