Problem for Galway the last 40 odd years has been finishing the shirt despite having endless rolls of silk.

If you want to judge every thing on winning All-Irelands Galway have come up short like many of the rest of us. If you want to judge Galway on great players, entertainment, flair, etc. they have contributed as much as anyone and more than many.

Replying To Viking66:  "Think that's a bit unfair on Davy. He won a League title with Clare the year he departed. And they have won nothing since. We were poor last year but the whole panel except 2 lads were playing club championship football at a high, mainly senior, level in the run up to last years championship which is a completely different game to hurling. Very few senior intercounty hurlers on other panels are also the best players on the top senior club football teams in the county. I suppose that's the price we pay for being one of very few genuinely dual counties as in nearly all the clubs put equal emphasis on hurling and football from underage upwards.. Most of the other dual counties have far more hurling only or football only clubs or even football areas and hurling areas like Cork, Galway etc. There was also the covid interruption to collective training for the whole panel as well. Same as this year. The collective wait for an all ireland title between the 3 counties Davy has managed when he started managing them is around 70 years! I suppose this season will tell alot but we havent been great at underage grades since the 1960s so it's not as if he has had any sort of conveyor belt of new talent to bring through."
No. Pretty much every county is the same. Bubbles O'Dwyer is one of Killenaule's best footballers. TheMcGrath's Loughmore Too footballers. That is replicated across Tipp and probably every county.
Cork does have football dominated in West Cork granted, but that does not mean that the rest of Cork do not have the same situations. Cork still have inter county dual players, like several other counties. Much of the Cork hurling panel play senior or high level football at club level and the county footballers playing high level club hurling I may add. Wexford are by no means unusual in this regard. Even Dublin with their resources have the same issues.

Definitely Canuck. I was very happy for them in 2017. Waterford are the most overdue though so I was shouting for Waterford that day. We are now waiting the next longest after Dublin in Leinster. Well Laois are waiting since 1915 or something!

Replying To Viking66:  "[quote=Cockney_Cat:  ""I agree that Limerick are the most likely winners of this year's All Ireland with Galway having the next best chance. If it happens that the 2 teams meet in the All Ireland final... "

You take a wholly hypothetical scenario, and then go on to postulate about this year's All-Ireland final between Limerick and Galway. Your arrogance is then followed by a strong rebuttal of the inadequacies of Galway over the last 5 or so years."
I think if Galway had Kilkennys mental toughness theydve won 3 or 4 all Irelands in the last 10 years with the hurlers they have. I think Kielys influence, and the lady who used I think to work with the Galway hurlers in 2017, have given Limerick that mental edge. Not a coincidence that the only team who have stopped Limerick going into this years championship going for 4 in a row were Kilkenny in 2019. If Galway play Limerick this year I can only see a Limerick victory. Abd Poolsturgeon can say what he likes about Galways record in big games being BS but facts are facts. With their playing population over the last 100 years, and some of the outstanding hurlers they have had over history they should definitely have won more all Irelands than they have."
Viking, I totally acknowledge that Galway have a terrible record in All Ireland finals and they have lost some big games through a lack of mental toughness (the 2015 All Ireland final comes to mind).

But you don't seem to realise that Galway hurling before 1975 was at about at the same level that Laois hurling is now so going back 100 years to bolster your point is ridiculous. If Laois were in our position
for many of the finals we've lost, getting byes to the All Ireland semi final and doing giant killing acts to reach the final, they'd have a horrendous record in All Ireland finals too! I have to keep on reiterating that more than half of the All Ireland finals we've lost over the years were 2nd round championship matches. In a properly structured championship (I.e. an open draw championship where geography was not the predominant feature) Galway wouldn't even have reached most of those All Ireland finals they lost because their inadequacies would have been found out earlier by better teams who had lost in their own provincial championship.

Any discussion of Galways record in big games should begin at 2008 when Galway entered the Leinster championship and there was a level playing field for all contenders. Our record since then has not been great but I think it will balance out over time. We have lost some big games that on paper we would have been expected to win but generally when we have lost it is because we were not good enough.

I was replying to a Galway poster when I described as BS the notion that Gslways poor record in All Ireland finals has any relevance for this year or any other year. It has absolutely ZERO relevance. I find it really frustrating when I hear someone from my own county utter nonsense like that. It is only relevant if you hold the false belief that it is relevant but thankfully the modern players are psychologically well prepared nowadays and clearly grasp that what happened in games that took place in previous eras when maybe the players concerned weren't even born, has zero relevance to whatever big game they are playing today. History is only a burden if you allow it to be so."]If if Galway wants to be a true par in Leinster hurling then they minor and there club champions should also take part. Very unfair that Galway club champions goes straight into a semi-final after a hard club championship while other counties have to play a hard provincial championship in November and December. It should be all or none.

Yes but no other county had their senior intercounty hurling panel playing exclusively senior championship club football in the run up to last years intercounty hurling championship. At the time this forum was full of lads saying Davy was trying to pull a fast one by Wexford running off the senior club hurling championship first so he could have the players together earlier than everyone else. What all those people giving out at the time didn't realise about Wexford is that all but 2 of the senior intercounty hurling panel play for their club 1st teams at football too and nearly all the top hurling clubs like Gorey, Glynn Barntown, Shels, St Martins, St Anne's are also in the top 8 senior football clubs. So not only did he not have the panel together fulltime for hurling training but also none of them were even playing or training at club hurling for more than a month immediately prior to the start if the senior intercounty hurling championship. And hurling is a completely different game to football.

In fairness I'm more than happy with Shane O' Neill, and I wouldn't touch Davy Fitz with a barge pole. For a lot of Galway people it was "Shane who" when he was appointed, but it's hard to be anything other than impressed with what he has done thus far, and in very trying circumstances mind you. He has brought through several young players, and finally after years of wondering where all of these great Minors and U-20s had gone to, they finally seems to be filtering through.

Good post.. You've got a top man in O Neill. He's highly rated in Limerick, was a very committed hurler and a hugely successful club manager.

I'm very happy with him too. I noticed he used the League to put some different lineups and brought in guys I hadn't heard of or had forgotten. While I like Davy I'm happy with the man we have.

Hes a good manager for sure. Maybe he was only Cathal Mannions injury away from an AIF.

Maybe, we'll never know.. Mannion going off made our job easier for definite..

Limerick in John Kielys first season in 2017 played 2 matches and lost both. Season over.. We were a much better team the following year.

I think O Neill will have learned a lot from last years semi finals.

If the Antrim players need any motivation against Dublin they should read some of the Dublin websites where we are being dismissed in very unflattering terms. The arrogance and sense of entitlement amongst an element of the Dublin fanbase is off the scale.

Would be delighted to see Antrim win next weekend. They've made great progress from last year and showed that throughout the league. I just think Dublin will be ready for them . It's a huge game for mattie kenny and Dublin players

Hold on a minute. Limerick started last year with five players ready to occupy any position in the Full back line. Tom Condon, Ritchie English, Mike Casey and Araon Costelloe all got injured and we had to bring a wing back to Full Back and a man who never played in a Full Back line in to corner back, but was man of the match, as a forward, in a U21 AIFinal, to replace them. We also lost our major go to sub Shane Dowling last year. Despite all this Galway played with five forwards- they hardly deserved to win..

What have they got to be so arrogant? Laois turned them over 2 years ago, they are not unbeatable.

I didnt say they deserved to win Oldtourman. The best team won the AI last year. All I said was had Cathal Mannion not got injured then Galway MIGHT have won that SF. You were the best team in 2019 too but didnt win the AI. The best team doesnt always win the biggest prize. That's knockout hurling for you. One off day and you are gone, no matter how brilliant you are!
