I think he deserves it, His scoring was brilliant. He was excellent. All time leading football scorer in GAA history (Truly outstanding achievement considering what many of us would give to score a single point for our county) He has contributed hugely to Mayo GAA but unfortunately for him, he's never got on the right side of a tight AI final and perhaps it's just missing another talented team mate up front (to boost his own undeniable efforts) which could have made all the difference and resulted in him winning POTY long before now. I'm not a big fan of his but I admire and respect his contributions, and his personal achievement deserves to be rewarded, both this year and across his entire career with that resulting in the greatest haul of scores ever seen. Doesn't bother me if he gets it. He was brilliant this year. Also superb in the final despite spending most of the second half chasing back when we lost our shape. A great player who people love to hate and many think he has a poor scoring record in big games. He doesn't. People just don't like him. Yeah and listen I don't mind them disliking him for reasons such as off the ball challenges or whatever their claims are but the same people try and claim he is a tap over merchant who doesn't show up on the biggest day. He had a remarkable season truth be told. Fitzsimons is arguably the stickiest marker out there. You don't see him beaten like that, it doesnt happen. When you consider coc was on a downward trajectory the last few years, it is hard not to give him the upmost credit for the season he had. However, kilkenny had a really great season also, and Id be slightly leaning to him for the award, but i agree with the sentiment regarding oconnors season, like him or loath him, you have to admire his grit. It's bizarre." People always do that though, they don't like the player therfore they'll run down their ability. Being completely honest, I don't like O'Connor as a player. He's the type of player in any sport that I just don't like. However he's a serious footballer and one of the best finishers I've ever seen. He is a hard working forward, who can score heavily and is ultra cool in front of goal. He is also able to give the defender plenty of what defenders are supposed to give to forwards and is a better tackler than a lot of them. In interviews he doesnt talk in the usual tired old platitudes and just keeps it short. I find him quite refreshing as a player to be honest. Had Kilkenny to win it before the final, but he wasnt having a good final until Durcan went off then came into the game.. Would have picked O Connor for POTY, probably Mayo bias coming through, but thought he had a great year, without him Mayo wouldnt have got to the final i think. I had Fenton 3rd, thought he didnt have a great year, compared to previous but thats probably his own fault for being so consistent. But thought Mayo did well on him in the final and Dublin took over midfield with Howard coming on. O'Connor would been an acceptable winner in fairness, hard luck and well done to Brian. Cillian performed brilliantly for a player who could have easily thrown his hat at it at this stage.
