We beat Mayo by a point, after playing our best football in 2 years. Very lucky to hold on and avoid extra time. Mayo were let down again by the old failing of so many bad wides. While we do, no doubt, have the players up front to trouble Ross, if getting enough ball, they bring a much bigger scoring threat than Mayo, especially from long range. Also it would be hard to see us doing as well at Midfield v Ross as we did V Mayo. Galway are rightly fav's with the bookies having taking down the All Ireland runners up, but the value of that form is now questionable following what we saw on Sunday. If we get to the final, as expected, we will have a huge test 2 weeks later. Cunningham is as shrewd a manager as there is and could bring bring something completely different to the final. I am hoping from a Galway point of view that the win in Castlebar will bring the team on a lot in terms of confidence. 50/50 game.

Yes he puts on the poor mouth. An Beal Bocht. He's probably predicting a Leitrim win at the weekend.

It's going to be Galway Vs Roscommon final. Very hard to call. We still need to improve massively defensively. Sligo cut us open down the middle the last day a couple of times so if we give Galway chances like that we will be in trouble.

A comfortable win at weekend which probably tells us nothing more than we knew already. Sending off killed gane early on. Can't say player did anything more than any other defender does. Was he booked already or was it a straight red. I think Galway followers are setting us up for a fall by building us up. Salthill is a totally different kettle of fish even though our recent record in it is pretty good.
A couple of worrying things from weekend. Sligo opened us a few times easily on Saturday and better forwards would have put us away. We still have to overturn a 6pt championship defeat from 12 months ago and on away territory. Both teams will have changed but not dramatically. One obvious thing is the return to form of ciaran murtagh over the past 6-8 weeks. To think that posters on here and a lot of supporters were looking for him to be dropped altogether. Form is temporary class is permanent. 3rd all time scorer for Roscommon after last weekend.
I am worried that Donie Smith will be found out again at championship level. Struggled on Saturday and against tougher opposition his lack of power and size could go against him as it has previously. Impact off the bench is his role but they have made a rod for their back by making him captain as they nearly have to pick him now. For me Niall Daly/Brian Stack/Ultan Harney should be captain.
Eoin McCormack got MOM but against 14 players defenders were always going to have little to do. Thought Ciaran Murtagh was excellent, both midfielders did well again but will face tougher tests. Enda Smith first half and Conor Cox also had their bright moments. Bench again made a big impact and Keith Doyle continues to impress and is adding scores to his game on a consistent basis which will please Dominics.
One other takeaway from weekend is the winning margins in most games are double digits and matches are well over with over 20 minutes left to play. Time to kill the provincial championships d it is killing the game. Attendances have fallen of considerably and people won't throw money away. 20 euro Saturday night to stand in rain and look at a poor spectacle before even taking in fuel costs or a drink or something to eat.

@smokieRoss you bemoan some supporters that was looking for Ciaran Murtagh to be dropped and in the next sentence you are looking to drop Donie Smith from the starting team even though he's one of the most established players you have and only Conor Cox has scored more than him for Roscommon this year. His size and strength would be roughly the same as Ciaran Murtagh also.

I'm not saying he should be dropped altogether I believe his role is what it has been for the majority of his career and that is an impact from the bench. He rarely plays well when started in championship and that has been the case under a number of previous managers including this one. He is an established league player but that shouldn't mean you are an automatic starter. I would label the same on Conor Cox who has produced for one half in the last two games so a case could be one starting and other coming on. I am going on the basis of last Saturday and his championship starts to date. I'd love nothing more for him to prove me wrong on 29th May which would probably mean we win a title.
Diarmuid Murtagh is an established player and an established starter in big games but that doesn't mean he will start even though I think the folly of just giving him 10 minutes is futile as he is going to be needed for longer when the chips are down and they will be be it v Galway, a qualifier or a quarter final. Roscommons best chance of making a semi final is winning connacht as there will be a lot of established teams in last round of qualifiers v beaten rivincial finalists who will have a game or two under their belt and momentum will be huge.

Not sure that's fair on Donie Smith who's been very good for us this season. I think our forwards are good but I too worry about our defence. A limited Sligo team opened us up a few times last Saturday. It will be Galway in Salthill and we can win that match but we need to tighten up. I wonder have we a defence coach or who's working on that with the team. Beyond Salthill, the test for Roscommon will be to beat one of the top teams and to win a championship game in Croke park. Incredibly, Roscommon haven't won a championship game in Croke Park since August 1980 .Many posters here have never seen Roscommon win a senior championship game in Croke park. When we won Connacht in 2017 and 2019, we didn't make any impression on the All Ireland series. That needs to change if this team is to make progress. It would be great to get to an All Ireland semi final, last done by Roscommon in 1991.

I do think that is harsh on Donie. He had a great league and is an excellent left footed free taker.
Completely agree about the porous looking defence and the great find that is Keith Doyle. Brilliant to see Ciaran Murtagh back to form.
Selfishly I like the provincial championship as it is a potential trophy for Roscommon when things are going well. But objectively I think they do need to be scrapped. Munster and Leinster are a joke and the provincial championship does absolutely nothing for Leitrim, Sligo, London or New York. The price for the stand was extortionate.

Roscommon play with two inside forwards, two team players and good consistent scorers in in Donie Smith and Conor Cox this year. A 3rd inside forward Diarmaid Murtagh is used as impact sub and has provided that impact in as seen in the league final recently.
Unless injury that isn't going to change for this upcoming final but the only reason you are giving this view is became (a wild guess) you are a St Faithleachs man or woman?

Club loyalty tends to influence the opinion of plenty of Roscommon supporters. I suppose I'm lucky enough to be from a intermediate club with zero senior County players.
Change was needed when things became very stale last year. Started off with Cunningham bringing in a new management team. Starters from last year O'Rourke, Mullooly, Kilronan all gone and replacements have been McCormack, McKeon and Harney.
Conor Daly, Diarmuid Murtagh have lost their starting spots would that be the case if their clubs didn't have extended seasons? Starting all Cox, D Smith and D Murtagh didn't work when tried before so i can understand why one is held in reserve right now. Cox for one has been dreadful when used as a sub. Donie Smith on Sunday while 0-1 was a poor scoring return he's always been inconsistent in his scoring but that doesn't mean he played poorly matter of fact he created 7 of our scores against Sligo and did plenty of good defensive work for his team.
I'd trust management on what team they pick. They see these players in training and challenges. And let's not forget the team that finishes a game can be just as important as the one that starts.

It's a a tricky one knowing what to do against Galway. I don't think there will be many if any changes but I would like to see Conor Daly and Kilroy in the starting 15. Daly for his physicality in the full back line but who does he replace? Hussey or Hughes is a decision management need to make also, Hughes had a great league but Hussey has the experience. Kilroy I think will be needed with Galway looking to kick it in inside. I don't think Donie should start, I have nothing against him and he had a great league but I've yet to see him play well in a big championship game as a starter anyway, having him and Diarmuid to come on with 20 to go would be a massive lift. I think with Enda, Heneghan, McKeon, Ciaran Murtagh and Cox we have enough with hopefully the likes of the Dalys and Harney able to contribute also. It's great to have these headaches we shouldn't complain!

But then one of the forwards would have to be sacrificed and does that mean we end up playing that dreadful defensive style we did against Galway last year. I remember at least one occasion against Sligo when their player broke through our defense even though there was three Ros player's near him. It didn't seem to be for lack of bodies back.
Also should Conroy be manmarked and who best to do it?
