Replying To Seanfanbocht:  "Problem is we have only 2 defenders Davy Murray and the impressive new man McCormack.
Brian Stack is a very good footballer and will make a decent fist of any position.
Dalys, Hughes are middle 8 attacking wing back type players who don't do defending very well.
I'm surprised Lyons who seems to be on the bench every game isn't getting game time as he's the sort who tackles and gets turnovers.
Anyway Promotion is in our in hands so hopefully we'll drive to victory against a team already promoted whose hearts and minds might be more focused on Mayo and 24th of April."
Good post. It suits us nicely that Galway are already promoted. We don't have enough natural defenders in the team. The standard in Division 2 has been poor and we haven't been found out but it may be a different story against the better teams. We also need our forwards to tackle. I think we'll win on Sunday but we'll need to improve considerably to trouble the Connacht championship.. We have good forwards and our accuracy last Sunday showed that but we need to tighten up in defence.

Those plans for a redevelopment of our county ground are nothing short of disgraceful.. our chairman talked about "a nice compact ground" yet it will be just as open and barren with no atmosphere as ever.. Those concrete seats & that abomination of a main stand are a shambles, to spend 4 million quid and not renovate either? No mention of floodlights so we will never host a Saturday night home league games.. or even a new scoreboard. Why can't these people go to somewhere like Portlaoise and model a nice ground on that?

I agree fully with the two previous posts. We have one of the the worst county stands in the whole of Ireland. The supporters are so far away from the action, it is unreal. Either:
(a) Knock the whole stand as previously suggested and build an entire new one, with all the facilities as installed in other grounds or

(b) Take out the concreate seats and move the playing pitch closer to the main stand. This allows you to build a second, covered smaller stand, close to the pitch on the opposite (Athlone Road) side.

Even club grounds like the Downs where St Faithleachs played in Westmeath was better than the Hyde from a supporters perspective.

If someone gives us a grant of €10m we could consider
*knocking down the Stand built in 2002,
*ripping out the open seats, there from day 1, *digging up the new pitch installed 2016, *demolishing the terraces and rebuilding the whole lot wherever we like on the site
*as well as all the other works.

We however have €1m (but owe Croke Pk €440k)
Need to borrow €3m which will cost c€30k a month to repay so its a case of improve what we can and get on with it.
We don't particularly need Saturday night League fixtures with loads of people driving on country roads in the dark etc.

I still cannot fathom how we are being fed the notion that the current works will cost 4 million quid? I know everything is riding in costs but I'm sure I am not alone in expecting a bit more than new toilets, dressing rooms and a car park for 4 million quid.... even a new roof on the terrace side? Its leaking and doesn't keep out rain anyway, a pointless bit of construction the first day ever

It is obvious that those concreate seats should have been taken out when the new stand was built in 2002. Does not say much for the design team that was involved at that time. It should also have been considered as an option when the new pitch was installed in 2016. In fact the concreate seats could still be removed with good project management techniques without interfering with the new pitch installed in 2016, and a new section of pitch installed closer to the seated stand. After a certain time, the markings on the pitch could be brought nearer the remaining seated area of the stand.

Some sponsors might be interested in paying some of the cost involved for a new/re-developed stand. I would not mind if a new stand was called the Ballymore Stand or the Tayto Stand as long as it gets done. I am not saying that it should be done immediately, but no substantial money should be wasted on something that needs replacing again in a few years time. I have not seen the plans on where the estimated 4 million will now be spent in the Hyde, so I accept that I am shooting in the dark to some extent.

Having said all of that, I have the greatest respect for the people involved with Roscommon GAA and Club Rossie at the moment, and I wish them well with all their hard work. I know that they are doing their very best for Roscommon GAA and trying to rectify some very poor decisions that was made in the past.

No plans to do that, doing something with the cement seating was considered but it would cost an extra 300k and wouldn't increase the capacity.

It's outlined on the planning permission what's to be done.

1.A viewing covered shelter for wheelchair users on the stand side.
2- A new toilet block 79 meters on the graveyard end.
3. heap load of new turnstiles giving designated access and exit points and a new ticket booth
4. Golf links road entrance to be relocated and set back 8M,
5. tarmac all around and proper car/bus park behind the dressing rooms on the stand side.
6. New dressing rooms

That work was meant to be under 3 million but since then building costs as we all know has gone through the roof and its been since decided to replace the current seats in the stand with new ones, press box and dugouts to get a upgrade, electronic scoreboard installed and multi-purpose centre behind the main stand, which would be used for meetings, events and matchday hospitality.

Once works is done the capacity will 25,000 (the current allowed capacity is just under 19k)

On a completely diverse note. Why do they call it Golf Links Road? I didn't think there was a Golf Links in Roscommon.

There is a 18th hole golf course on a 58 acres site on that road.

There is a golf course out that road. Why they call it a links is an ecumenical question

It used to be called the 'County Home Road', but during the Celtic Tiger that changed. Golf Links Road (despite the fact you could hardly be further from the sea) has a nicer ring for potential residents.

We're inclined to use the term Golf Links instead of Golf Course in Ros.
Seems Links should only be used for seaside courses?

A golf course but not a golf links. A very limited number of golf links in the world and to be called a Links course carries a certain prestige. Roscommon is not a golf links.

It's a road that links one to the golf course. Anyway back to the football.

This has to be up there with the wildest statements I have ever read.. In that case why does anybody ever leave the house in the evening? The pros of Saturday night games far outweigh any negative.. the atmosphere under lights is brilliant, the county town would be hopping after a league game on a Saturday night especially after years of missing out due to unplayable pitches, safety concerns for larger crowds and the pandemic. Other fans would stay over and bring money to the county.. the option is there if a few want to have a drink after because there is no work the next day, players included.. Imagine Dublin coming down on a Saturday night? Train direct into the town, place would be like early 00's....

Prestige meaning they wouldn't be selling pint bottles of Bulmer or Taytos?

Prosecco & Hors- douvere's old boy.
They had to put up a sign at the Pool Table "Clothes must be worn whilst playing" for the Rossie chaps who would make there way down from the Hyde following a game of bogger.

Good to see the club action back underway last week and this week its the turn of Div 2 & 3.
I see Barrys beat Michael's by 4 last night in the Tansley Cup.

OGara Cup:
Castlerea play croans and Éire Óg "host" Órán tonight, both in the dome (why I do not know).

Elsewhere fuerty have had an awful tough week, I wish them the best of luck against kilmore. Be interesting to see how Bannon gets on stepping up from the Joe's back to his own club.

While brigids and clann 2nd teams play Shannon gaels and Kilbride respectively. Could see wins for both 2nd teams there.

I'll also go for wins for Castlerea, Órán and fuerty.

Div 3 is a bit of a mixed bag with a host of 1st and 2nd teams in it.
Castlerea were due to play creggs last night but was called off, I didn't hear if its tonight or not instead, it was fixed for the dome originally so probably not.
Elsewhere this evening, Ballinameen host Strokestown B, Doms B play Aidans and Pearses B travel to Rooskey to play Kilglass.

I also believe Fuerty were due to play Elphin in Div 4 tomorrow morning but the county board couldn't get a ref!!
