Mattie McGleenan steps down

Replying To fredflint:  "Answers on a post card

- what intercounty experience did Mickey Harte have before being appointed Tyrone manager.
- same Fitzmaurice
- same jim Gavin
- same Kevin Walsh (won nothing with sligo)
- same malachy o Rourke

Obsessed with outside men where there is very scant data to show it's worth the spend."
Harte managed Tyrone Minors (1991-1998) and under-21s and won the All-Ireland with both these teams before he was named the Tyrone Senior Football Manager.

In 2009, Jim Gavin coached Dublin to a Leinster Under 21 Football Championship and progressed to the All-Ireland final where they lost to Cork. He repeated the Leinster victory in 2010, going one better than the previous year by winning the All-Ireland Under 21 Football Championship final.

Eamon FitzMaurice was a selector for Kerry in 2009, winning the All Ireland SFC in 2009, the National League in 2009, and the Munster SFC in 2010.

Any more questions?

Since he went to Galway he's won 2 Connacht titles. And it didn't take him 5 years either.

Malachy o Rourke won championships at club level. Took Fermanagh to an Ulster final Replay against Armagh.
Managed Monaghan to Ulster titles and it didn't take him 5 years either.

Sorry but the post card wasn't big enough."
1)Answer me this Jimmy Magee, what managerial credentials did your savior Martin McHugh have when he was appointed Cavan Manager??? He would never have gotten the job with today's mentality.

2) I know for a fact that at club level, the average teams have a tough time finding managers, regardless of the money involved, and end up settling for 5th or 6th choice. Do you really think the chairman wouldn't love to get Jim McGuinness or Pat Gilroy or James Horan etc. unfortunately for you he lives in the real world like all of us.

3) Not that we are anywhere near an All-Ireland but native managers as winners is too frequent to be a coincidence.
All Dublin and Kerry's wins, Donegal with McGuinness, Harte with Tyrone,Cork with Counihan,Armagh with Kiernan,Derry with Coleman, Meath with Boylan, Down with McGrath. In fact you'd be hard pressed to find a winner from outside.

Folks - does everyone forget the last time when we as a country went on a spending spree and did'nt give a damm about the consequences. Kildare did that - big name Manger etc. and had to go cap in hand to Croke Park to pay the bills and look where that manager brought them - ended up coming back to basics (a kildare man). If we go for a big name then fair enough - but the bill must be paid by someone. Are we all going to pay an extra 5 euro admission on the turnstiles? think that would start another debate.

Ambition is fair enough but ambition without effort is nonsense. Effort will need to come from players and supporters -

Supporter effort might be financial and realism - and are we prepared do what is required..?"
Big difference in Cian O'Neill and the people who are being mentioned to lead Cavan today. He has covered some milage don't you think now try and put it in perspective he is no novice manager he worked with the best and learnt the trade. The people being named for the Cavan job from Cavan could hardly tie this mans boot laces. Credit where credit is due.

Would anyone know why peter reilly always seems to say no tot he job? He seems interested in managing teams and is a passionate cavan man so is there something under the surface that's makes him look the other way when the job is vacant? (i mean if it is true that he pulled out of the ring)

Maybe to avoid abuse. You do something for the good of the county and keyboard warriors bang on about you. Even years later.

Knowing Peter a long time I would say the time and commitment required he is not repaired at this moment in time to commit also the man he worked well with Joe McCarthy is no longer there to support him and off course one other thing Peter is a young family man and has everything in perspective.
He would off course be aware of the selection committee.
Anyway who the hell would want the job except maybe one's that were all ready involved in player power to oust managers.

Junior All Irelands count now???? He won 2 Connacht titles on the back of two All Ireland U21 winning teams from 2011 & 2013 and maybe also a few from the U21 winning teams of 2002 & 2005, with talent like that at his disposal some would say he should be winning Connacht titles. This is his 5th year in charge and first time to get to an AI semi final. Malachy O Rourke took over a Monaghan team although in freefall through the league could boast established seniors such as the Hughes, the Mones, Corey, Clerkin, Lennon among others and most importantly they had forwards of the calibre of Freeman, Finlay and McManus, it was a case of getting them committed and gelling in a few younger players most notably Beggan to turn their fortunes around. This is his 6th year at the helm and if all goes well on Saturday the Farney will be looking forward to an AI semi final. Inaroundthehouse maybe McGleenan should have got more time as , like the two men mentioned he'd taken over an established team who were on an upward curve having been to a Quarter Final and had just won promotion to Division 1,maybe given time he might have brought us further. Maybe.

I agree he should have for sure he came to Cavan late November 2016 got relegated 2017 to division two promotion to Division 1 2018 gone June 2018 all that in 18 months. Sadly player power should never be allowed to win but once again in Cavan they have prevailed.
One would have thought they were special players for there is possibly only one that might make any of the top twelve senior teams in the country. Sooner they realise they are average players the better they must learn to respect management and develop to play at the higher level.

What evidence have you that it was player power??

Rightly or wrongly, he had to go! Tactically inept and unable to get the best players on the panel. The overwhelming feeling amongst supporters was that he had to go. He's gone.

That's the first step - the 2nd is appointing the right man now. I'm not sure that will happen.

Maybe he was hacked. Or maybe he'll do a Donald Trump and say he meant to say it would be a great loss.

Based on What?

Are there any other candidates? Mickey Graham?

Are the reports that Peter has pulled out of the running false then?

Thank you for bringing this forward that post it was made after the shameful display by a County team in Brewster Park against Tyrone. Yes I made the post but when I found out what went down on that day I was shocked and disappointed that a team could do what they did to the management.
I decided then to find out more about it and also what experience the management had and to my dismay we had quality on the side line and nothing inside it. Apologising is a sign of weakness but on this occasion I have no problem doing so.
Unfortunately we will have a local take up the post who will have nothing remotely close to their CV's if the names that are mentioned who are selecting the new person are true?? We also have lost Jim Cribbins it would seem that's a shame.

So he was no loss but when you found out that allegedly the players got rid you realised he was actually a very good manager. Are you Donald Trump?

It's time to put up or shut up. If you know something that the rest of us don't then spit it out. Otherwise you sound like a gossiping school girl trying to create drama where there is none.

But his record speaks for itself as does Lorcan Martins.
