Replying To Claretandblue:  "You must not have a clue about sport if you expected our women to beat the Aussies"
Where did I ever say I expected them to beat the Aussies. However they did beat them last Jan in their home 7s with pretty much the same teams bar Lucy Mul, so they have the capability but their season went downhill from there on with a combination of injuries and players taken for the 15s. They were not coming into this with form and they knew they had to beat GB to stand any chance of getting to a semi final when the draw was made. They would get one shot at the Aussies and they had to take that in the group game to try and avoid them in the QF. It didn't work and the second time around was not going to happen.

Replying To zinny:  "Yeah we were well put back in our box. The mess-up was losing to GB as that cost them a chance to play the USA who I think they could beat but its hard to look past an Aussie, Kiwi final. That's a hard one to call."
USA looked good beating GB 17-7 … might end with bronze. Will probably be a NZ v AUS final.

So we get a chance to get revenge on GB at 5 in the women's rugby…. Can someone explain why these place matches have to be played when teams are out of the medal race…. What difference if any ,what place you end up in … ?

Replying To Doylerwex:  "Harrington gave an absolute master class"
A masterclass is often what's required to 'sway' certain olympic boxing jugdes, and sometimes a masterclass isn't enough. Roy Jones, Conlon and many more will know that. Saw a slick enough super heavy Brit go down on a 'split decision' to an Armenian last night. Dodgey sport, worse than hawkeye.

Super win for Canadian Ladies 7s team over Australia in the semi final. Australia looked like a team who were already in the final, too complacent. Canada's second try was class.

Time fillers, the teams that are winning need recovery time and the fans need to have something to watch. They follow the same format as the 7s circuit.

GB beaten by China, next year will be the first year that China will play in the 7s circuit so this was also a bit of a surprise. It's the first time Rugby will have got any coverage in China and its all down to the Olympics.

My theory - but I could be wrong - is that final placings must have an impact on things like world ranking and seeding for future tournaments. Otherwise, I don't see the point of playing them either.

Must be very hard to pick yourself up to play a 5th to 8th place match when you've just lost a quarter-final and seen your medal hopes go up in smoke.

Not exactly time fillers but it's how all tournaments are structured and does allow all teams more rest between games
Next year isn't china's first time on world series circuit. They've been competing on and off for around 20 years. And competed in most of the 7s women's world cups.

Terrific performance by Daniel…not sure if he is from the Armagh or Down side of Magheralin. Some 3 days for St Patrick's College , Armagh with 7 ex pupils winning AI medals and another after winning Olympic Gold.
