Yeah, sorry about that, my bad But let's be honest, if the BBC are so quick to make comments That's all I'm saying jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20687 - 31/07/2024 17:45:57 2563287 Link 0 |
Chris Froome! UKs most successful ever road cyclists, 4 x Tour De France!. Born and bred in Kenya, and went to college in South Africa. Switched from a Kenyan to a UK cycling license in 2008 after Kenya didn't qualify for Olympics. Gained a pro contract from that then moved to Monaco, and has barely ever set foot in UK! They'd claim anyone that lot! :-0

What little credibility was left in Olympic boxing is gone. O'Rourke destroyed that girl. Pathetic. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3143 - 31/07/2024 21:16:08 2563308 Link 2 |
Felt so sorry for Aoife O'Rourke lost because of a poor ref and judges who shouldn't be let near another fight.

Horrendous. Imagine giving a year of your life to train and prepare to chase your dream and all come down to 9 minutes where it's irrelevant what you do in the ring

Hard luck to Aoife, she seemed devasted afterwards. How did that girl get docked a point in the first round then continue to be warned over and over again without losing more points. Six of the boxers gone now and a lot of them on split decisions.

Polish fighter must have been warned 6-7 times... What's the referee at? In a close fight like that, a sanction there would have justly made all the difference jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20687 - 31/07/2024 23:22:34 2563326 Link 0 |
I'm no boxing expert but how did o rourke not get that fight??reminded me of conlan in Rio.. CTGAA10 (Limerick) - Posts: 2378 - 31/07/2024 23:32:03 2563327 Link 0 |
I wouldn't go as far as to say she destroyed her but she played right into her hands by getting into a mauling match with her…. The biggest problem was the referee, who warned the Pole about 10 times but only penalised her once ( in the 1st round )… Any sport where your fate is put in the hands of judges is just impossible to have any real trust in…. but that's the way it is…!

I will admit to knowing very little about boxing but the commentators, the analysis in the studio and the boxer herself all alluded to the fact that it was very marginal and they all seem to accept that she wasn't good enough on the night. That's all I know

There's been a trend in this Olympics where the busier or more aggressive boxer seems to be getting all these decisions. Aoifes was particularly bad. Jude Gallagher's second round was poor but he probably lost the fight anyway so less impactful. We seemed to do far better on the old scoring system. Far less ambiguous with the white of the glove. I'm especially disappointed for Aoife because she's the best boxer in that division. Everything she threw was far cleaner. Even the BBC commentator was confused. It's sort of an unwritten rule in boxing that you respect the decision and move on while the tournament is ongoing. It's a very humble sport, and they don't want to be seen to be running the polish girl down either. It's not her fault the judges were incompetent. Yeah and Irish never claim anyone with tenuous links to the country. .

Such a ridiculous statement . No disrespect to womens sevens rugby but having a lack of knowledge of the relative strengths of the game is hardly an an indicator that someone has not a clue about sport.

Aoife has given several years of dedication to the sport and is the best boxer in this devision. The Polish girl who beat her and the girl she will now meet in the quarter both just pushed their opponents around the ring and held on after throwing a punch. Not sure where amature boxing is going if that is the standard of referring and judgeing at Olympic level. Two judges gave it to each fighter and one judge had it even. (I think it was 28 each). Not sure how they then decided how the Polish girl got the decision after all the holding and Aoife had thrown the cleaner punches. Keep the head up Aoife as you are a class act and we are very proud of you in Roscommon and so is the boxing community. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 630 - 01/08/2024 10:54:39 2563368 Link 1 |
It was an utterly ridiculous statement, indicative of a total lack of knowledge.
