terrible game of football until excitement got going in the last 10 minutes......i cant understand why inter county forwards cant kick the ball over the bar from just outside the D ......passing and passing over and back across the field. why an intercounty forward cant kick the ball over the bar from 25-30 yards is mind bogling.

If it was that simple, you'd think Limerick would be better at it?

we're not great at the football here.....but better off to be strong at one rather at trying to be strong at both and end up winning nothing.

When do Cork get their medals for beating Cork twice? I see they brought out a t-shirt. I thought trophies were only for finals? Congratulations to the County of Clare.

Not sure about that. I'm glad that we're trying to be competitive at both and that I've been in Croker to see us win (and lose) All-Irelands in both codes.
Our ladies teams are in both finals over the next two weekends as well.

You're an awful strange man. Werent you rooting for Cork a few days ago?

Should you not be organising your back to school primary books?

Fiar play. I have great admiration for Counties who are strong at both codes.

It is simple though, that's the thing. It's just been turned into something different, and complicated beyond all recognition. I mean in yesterday's final, Fitzmaurice was explaining the Armagh hand signals, one of which meant all players moved to one side of the pitch?? I mean what's that about? Look at Galway, and plenty of other teams (my own Cork included) doing the same with the constant recycling. The skills of kicking the ball over the bar are being coached out of fellas. It's possession at all costs and not shooting until you are into the 'shooting zone' - which means the opposite team sets up defensively to ensure nobody get's into the zone.
It should be simple for counties to play, but today's game is anything but...

It has become punch basketball, the foot element of gaelic foot-ball is a rarity nowadays. Yesterday's goal was a punch attempt at a point and ended as an opportunist punched goal. The decent footballers on both sides were crowded or smothered in blanket defence system.

You started off with 'it is simple', but then concluded with 'it should be simple'. That's quite a step back.

The 'simple' reason that it's usually not simple to breach modern intercounty elite defense is because they're packing 15 men inside their own 50 yard line. There is nothing simple about breaching that.

Galway have lots of good kicking forwards, but most of them aren't exceptionally quick, and pace is probably the no1 ingredient needed to breach modern day Armagh style defense. Not just Armagh of course, but they're the current gold standard for mass defense after styming Kerry and Galway to land Sam.

Well a few factors come to play. 1 twenty years ago
we had a good team that not once but twice put Kerry to the pin of there collar- they walked every other game. On both occasions Connacht Referees were involved and to say they done everything they could for Kerry is to put in mildly.
2 Your Province has won a total of two All Irelands in 58 long years. Mine in that time have won 22. If Galway had two big dogs beside them in the province whipping up everything at all levels Ye might not even have won the two Ye did win
3 Rugby is the game of a vast amount of the Population in the city and even towns like Abbeyfealein Limerick and Football will always suffer in a background like that
4 the dual player has always been a far bigger problem in Limerick than it ever was in Galway. Any decent Football Team we ever had going back even to the Forties - even Mackey and Jackie Power were great footballers-had a list of good county Hurlers on then. In Galway that kind of overlap is never that heavy-I think they say North and South of the Dublin Galway Railway Line

I don't follow American Sports. But can you imagine if the new York Giants were down, not for one or five but for forty five long years and they then woke Rip Van Winkle like from their slumber and stormed to the biggest prize of all five times in seven years and were only knocked out by a single score on each of the other two years. Well let me tell you they would acclaim their heroes Loud and Proud.

There was a far more important reason they beat you, and the other teams they beat. Your defense was excellent all year. But they were brave enough individually to try to beat a man to get into better scoring positions. Yes this led to them conceding more turnovers. But they kept trying. They didn't resort to potshots from unrealistic positions, or aimless keep ball with noone prepared to take a risk.

Brave enough, or fast enough? The old cliche goes that you can't coach speed. Speed and bravery are not interchangeable either, whatever you're spoofing about there. The Galway forwards, with the exception of Walsh, do not have the pace to threaten well drilled blanket defense. It's not a bravery issue, it's a pace issue. And Walsh couldn't even convert his frees last Sunday, let alone muster enough game to take anyone on at pace.

They didn't try too often Pope. It's all very well being patient, as most modern football coaches coach teams these days, especially when facing what was as you say a well drilled defence, but at some point someone has to take the bull by the horns and try to get inside the perimeter and shoot. Risk a turnover. Armagh did more of this than Galway, who had more possession because they were more patient and won more turnovers, but had fewer scores because they rarely got the ball into decent scoring positions.

They hadn't fewer scores though, they had more scores. Thirteen to twelve to be precise. They missed 7or8 frees, at least 0-4 of them very scoreable. 0-17 'wuda' been a great return against '15 inside the 50 dee', and was there for them on frees alone. You can talk all the bs-bravery you like, but missing 7or8 frees was THE significant factor in Galway's loss.

Kelly's fitness is a loss to Galway, because as a speedy line breaker, his contribution is sorely missed on what is quite a one paced offensive unit. Even Finnerty, who's enjoying 'a great press' after the offensive debacle that unfolded after his early departure last Sunday, lacks pace and rarely takes on his man. Just relies on his sweet left foot to take the chances that present, but I've never seen him burn an intercounty defender for pace.
