For context Munster played a home URC Quarter Final and Semi Final over the past 2 weekends.

The Quarter Final drew 14k and the Semi Final barely made 20k.

Munster were also the defending champions, both games played in Thomond Park.

That is a team representing 6 counties in a sport that is on the crest of a wave. Through that lens I don't think the football championship game attendances were that bad.

Sure Dublin home games have been really poor all year. That was the one the GAA could hang their hat on for years and it is a definite blow to the association to see those figures collapse.

I don't have figures but the crowds in Portlaoise and Markievicz park looked healthy. 5,127 for Donegal Clare was impressive, Clare knew they weren't winning this and don't travel for football these days, 5k traveling Donegal support is impressive.

No alarmism about Cavan Roscommon only drawing 4k. Both teams have had lost 3 championship games and fans know they are not going much further in the competition.

I was surprised Mayo and the Dubs didn't sell out. Mayo regularly bring over 10k to league games and 30k to Croke Park. i thought finally getting a championship shot at the Dubs out of Croke Park, they'd sell this out on their own.

All in all though, i thought the group games went better than expected interest and attendance wise.

13k at Mayo v Derry
6.5k at Galway v Monaghan
6k at Tyrone v Roscommon

Very low attendances again for championship games, each would easily get more people at similar league games, though not a surprise when see crowds over last few months and already JB has identified that change is needed in the structure to cut down on games, currently too many matches in short timeframe and people cant afford it, plus to reintroduce meaning to all games.

Only for the Cork hurlers would have been less than half the 30,000 in attendance. Probably the best supported GAA county since the Dublin football following has reduced.

The GAA big wigs have destroyed the football Championship….What used to be the flag ship sporting event in this country every year which nearly everyone looked forward to is now virtually dead in the water… fewer and fewer people have any interest in it …!

Interestingly L.O.I Premier Division attendance figures have surged by 6% this year in comparison to this time last year and this is often with teams playing 2 games a week.[ It is actually a 36 game season.] Maybe some of the missing Gaelic Football followers are going to the L.O.I instead!

The Irish News gave a guess figure on the attendance in Healy Park and other news newspapers ran with that figure as it was official. I'd say closer to 8k was at the match and was a good atmosphere in the stand among the two set of supporters.

Lower attendance at P.Q.F between Galway v Monaghan than there was at the group game against Derry a few weeks back.

Well the reasons for the low attendance at Tyrone v Roscommon is obvious (I live quite near to Omagh, and didn't bother going, nor did anyone I know) - we have zero faith in the current management (and haven't had for years), the lack of motivation in the team is visible from space, there's a couple of club teams in Tyrone who'd beat Tyrone on current form; and most Tyrone fans I know were relieved that we were beaten now instead of making a show of ourselves at a later stage. There's a lot of omerta in the county, and very few outsiders have any idea of how bad morale in the camp is

I can't blame people for voting with their feet when it comes to the football championship. There's primarily three reasons for people not attending football championship games due to a lack of interest: poor product on the field and no jeopardy. I've been to games and to say that there is no atmosphere would be an understatement. The Sam Maguire matches are worse than the Tailteann cup games due to the defensive play and this is even with teams being afforded massive leeway i.e. they can lose 2-3 matches and still be in the championship. This leads me to the second point - a team can potentially lose three championship matches in a season and be in the quarter final!!! Who in their right mind would pay good money to travel to a football match miles away when there is no jeopardy and the product is bad? Until/Unless the people responsible for the football championship have a rethink and make some radical changes; the situation may get worse.

4 "jeopardy" matches last weekend drew around 35,000 people.
Average 8,750.
First 2 Rounds of Group games "non jeopardy" drew c130,000.
Average 8,125.
Not a great argument for "Jeopardy"

Reports of GAA expecting 60k Saturday and 45k Sunday.
Probably a tad optimistic.

You would think given the numbers Dublin and Armagh alone would pull that 60k would be possible when you add in us and Galway. But a disaster of a weekend for anyone trying to get accomodation in Dublin, especially Galway supporters as they are in the late game. Taylor Swift, Dublin Pride and Longtitude all on.

How did it all go so wrong for them? Dream start winning that All Ireland with a team that had a few years still left in it and a good number of quality players to be added from the underage ranks each subsequent year.

There will easily be 60,000 on Saturday, Dublin v Mayo and the other game sold out last year. Probably not 40,000 Sunday.
