Once again this thing with Kilkenny....also haven't beaten Westmeath in two years or won a game outside Leinster since 2016 or beaten Galway since 96. Galway haven't lost a round Robin game to Kilkenny in those 2 years too but games go up a notch in importance after round Robin, Clare haven't lost to Limerick in round Robin in last two yeas either.....both have yet to beat Limerick or Kilkenny in big games or knockout games, i.e games that matter more."]Came across as that I have round Robin games as nothing, they are important and can catch you but they're mostly an end to a means, get out and try not get injured. But at the end of the day they are round Robin games and not knockout games.

Our record against top tier teams the last few years isn't bad. Ignoring 2020 when our lads all played football as a warm up for the championship, and ignoring our games against Kilkenny, we should've won in Salthill but only got a draw in 2019, drew with Dublin, won the Leinster title, and should've beaten Tipp. We were competitive against all the top tier teams we played. We only lost 1 championship game all year, the same as Tipp who won the AI. In 2021 we should've won another Leinster, some bizarre calls and lack of a panel cost us in the LSHSF. We were then the better team against Clare for 3/4 of the game. Again we were competitive. In 2022 we should've beaten Galway. We didn't play at all for 50 minutes, then made all for the last 20, and if the game had of gone on for another 5 minutes we would likely have won. We should've beaten Dublin had numerous shocking wides. And we should've beaten Clare. Lack of panel and key injuries cost us. Even last year when we were decimated by injuries and had a terrible season we only lost to Galway by I think 6. And we had a team out similarly weakened to the 1 they had out in this year's WCF. We should've beaten Dublin even with the weakened team, we created something like 20 more scoring chances. And the bottom line is we have won a senior championship title more recently than Galway, Dublin, Cork, Waterford and Clare. And nothing any of the pundits can say this time of year can change that. Bottom line is we nearly ended up in the Joe McDonagh for this year and had shocking performances against the likes of Clare and Westmeath. We need consistency to change opinions. goreyll (Wexford) - Posts: 186 - 07/02/2024 15:46:59 2524968 Link 1 |

True, but what I was talking about here is not about opinions of Wexford hurling in general. It's about how certain people state facts. They'll regularly state the fact that one team only had x number of players from last year's championship team, but rarely or never state the fact that Wexford only had a small number either, and that's what grates with me. We had a consistent year last year right up to just before the very end! Joking aside we had a bad year last year. But that's not the point. Galway had as bad a year in 2021. The point is you have pundits raving about other counties and dismissing ours, or running down any small step we make trying to get back up by dismissing them, ah it was a weakened team they played, they had more supporters there because of the Leinster Council, its only winter hurling, which by the way suits our current style of play far worse than most other counties'. So for the 1st time we failed to get out of the round robin, last year. Only 2 counties have made it out of every round robin. Kilkenny and Limerick. But sure our record against Kilkenny doesn't count What you don't seem to see is that narrative around us is part of the reason our record against so called weaker counties is worse. They target us. They don't even bother trying against some of the other top tier counties. Now why do they target us? Is it because they know our players strengths and weaknesses? Our tactics and gameplans? Or is it more likely because the general narrative in the media is that we are #####? Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 20656 - 07/02/2024 16:10:13 2524982 Link 0 |

I wonder is our efforts against teams a more style makes fights scenario more than getting up for team A rather than B, I think 1 of the reasons we do well against KK is they struggle with the sweeper when we reverted to that and also our running game at the moment, we have found Galway hard to deal with at times over the last decade due to their physicality, last year against Dublin a combination of poor wides and shot selection from us cost us the game, year before it simply missed opportunities, missed frees with Chin not starting, missed a penalty and a 1 on 1 goal chance. Funnily Dublin are the opposite to us the last few years in that they tent to bother Galway and seem to crumble against KK. Unforgivable complacency and nothing else in my view cost us v Westmeath the last 2 years. Last year over the 5 games in Leinster our score difference was -4 and Westmeath's was -80, if we were relegated it was 1000% our own fault for the calamity vs Westmeath but being brutally honest would have been a disaster for the Leinster championship. Won an AI and should probably have won more. Injuries and a lack of a suitable game plan, or plans, didn't help. Most of all we seemed to think we were going to lose before we even got out on the pitch the last couple of times. At the same time the last couple of years we lost 1 and drew 1 against them. The same record as Dublin have against Galway the last couple of years btw. Hopefully the new man from Westmeath will have the players better tuned in and positive, not only against Galway and Dublin but also Antrim and Carlow, who will both be targetting us. Watched the SETU derby. Wickham did well for Waterford. Lawlor made a good save for Carlow. Waterfords goal wasn't his fault. Young Corcoran did OK, Paudie Casey got switched onto MOTM Paudie Fitzgerald and slowed him down a little. Dundon was out with the hamstring hope it's not too bad. Until those should have's become "we did", Wexford will always be a 2nd rate team in the eyes of all GAA pundits. The perception - rightly or wrongly - in the Munster counties is the Leinster championship is Kilkenny and Galway, and even either of them they think they are better than. Until Wexford and Dublin change that narrative, and beat Tipp and Cork and Clare in championship, that attitude will take hold. Kilkenny don't view Wexford as their rival in the way Wexford view Kilkenny as theirs. In the eyes of many Kilkenny folk Wexford are plucky upstarts but when it boils down to the big day will fold unlike them. Tipp are Kilkenny's rival and nothing will change that. I watched League Sunday last night, Daly looked nervous with what he was saying. I doubt he watched it, Clare v Cork clashed with it. In fairness, it's not any individual poster's fault when that starts happening. You just hit 'post reply' as normal, but sometimes it kicks off a mess where several previous posts get quoted, instead of just the most recent one. I agree it's annoying when it happens, but it's some quirk of the system here that none of us ordinary folk can do anything about. I think its the fact for a county who loves our hurling we have had very little success compared to other counties overall. We have only won one senior all ireland since 1968. In the same time period we have not won any minor All Ireland and only one under 20/21 title. Until we start competing and winning for these titles I don't blame other counties for having their current perception of us as a county.
