Get into 1a for next year's League

So Rossitters target was to finish outside the top 3 in Leinster? Find that very hard to believe. Reaching a QF means you finished 3rd in Leinster and bet a Joe McDonagh team in the next round. Past hurler (None) - Posts: 797 - 01/06/2024 07:23:19 2548638 Link 0 |
Not even avoid relegation? If we weren't targeting a.leinster final then we seriously lack ambition

Personally think that would be really bad for hurling. Wexford people generally despise Kilkenny. We respect them obviously, but absolutely love beating them. It would be the only fixture outside Munster that has the same emotional attachment as any Munster rivalry Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3123 - 01/06/2024 08:08:54 2548645 Link 0 |
I'm not so sure about that Viking. I'd suggest his target was 1a in the League and minimum 3rd in Leinster. In my lifetime we're generally a quarter final team. Not that finishing third in Leinster automatically amounts to that but we will be expected to beat whoever comes out of Joe Mac. I'd have taken this at the start of the year but given how the group played out I think we've actually underachieved. Whatever about Antrim, the way we let Dublin back was madness. Three years in a row we've been quite a bit ahead of them and somehow not managed to win any of those matches. Enough about that. It's great to still be there, particularly after what happened in Antrim. We just have to treat the next day as if it's our last. If we don't, then it will be. After that is really our all Ireland final. Momentum is a funny thing. If we managed to cause a surprise you never know what might happen. Regardless, Rossi has learned well, implementing a style, bringing on young lads, restored some pride and had some very respectable performances. He's done well this year. 3rd was the minimum requirement

Minimum requirement was 3rd place apparently

I'd say 1A in league and Leinster final appearance were targets with 3rd as an acceptable. Not qualifying in the top 3 would have been a disaster.

The minimum ambition for any of the top four teams had to be qualification. Anything less would have been a big disappointment if not quite the disaster as it is for Galway. Probably true to say that (assuming a win over the McDonagh team) that anything beyond that was bonus territory for Wexford and Dublin. Having witnessed our utter demolition at the hands of Clare last year and having seen both Wexford and Dublin's propensity to take foot off the gas, facing Limerick, Clare or Cork is a big step up. Not convinced that either of us is ready to take any of them but at least the opportunity presents itself. You have to be ambitious and have self-belief at this stage or you will be taken apart. Very hard to believe and lads then think we can beat Clare or Limerick. I know one thing for sure if the the hurlers have that mindset then we might not even beat Laois or Offally never mind Limerick or Clare. Sure our job for the year is already done. Nonsense WEXILE (Wexford) - Posts: 311 - 01/06/2024 08:46:50 2548654 Link 0 |
I think we could beat the losers of the Munster Final. Why couldn't we? The targets I was talking about were what were set out for Rossi at the start of his tenure for his 1st year. Last year was a shambles. When interviewing him for the job it would probably have been unreasonable to tell him we expect to win a Leinster final, or League title, in his 1st year beaing in mind where he was starting out from. Qualifying out of Leinster and getting 1a status for the League next year are light years ahead of where we were at last year. Bringing on so many of the younger players is a huge bonus too. There was no knowing lads like Chin, OHanlon, Mogie, Dee etc were going to commit at all either. Lee Chin even said it himself that he wasn't sure until he got talking to Keith.

Some writers and pundits believe that waiting 3 weeks is too long before playing your next game. Magpie2 (Wexford) - Posts: 383 - 01/06/2024 14:07:14 2548681 Link 0 |
You're setting the bar fairly low I'm afraid if this is what you believe. Why would it have been unreasonable to tell Rossi that we expect to reach/win a Leinster final? The last championship match these lads played was in beating Kilkenny in a very impressive showing in Wexford park last Ma. This is the same Kilkenny side that has reached the last 2 All Ireland finals.

I'm not setting the bar anywhere. It wasn't my decision. I hope we are going to win a Leinster every year. Since 2018 I've believed we can again, which really is the 1st time I've believed that since the early noughties if I'm being honest. But equally I've experienced enough disappointments since the early 90s to be realistic. For us to win a Leinster in any year we need alot of little things to go right for us, the same as any of our opponents. Some of those things a manager can control, team selection, substitutions, tactics, set up, preparation, coaching etc, but others he can't, refereeing, luck, opposition, injuries, the draw etc. While I didn't have anything to do with selecting the manager, I think realistic targets when Rossi was appointed were making 1a and getting out of Leinster, bearing in mind how last year went, and the massive uncertainty over who would even be playing for us this year. Anything else, like winning an AIQF, or more, would be a very welcome bonus. Anyone honestly expecting more than that in September of last year would frankly be delusional. Ah. Set out for Rossi or set out by Rossi. There's a difference

Will Wexford win an All Ireland at any level soon? Last appearance at senior, minor or U20/21 was 2015 and got battered by Limerick. Watching Offaly last night, would love to see that for Wexford but have no expectations of it happening soon. Hopefully the minors continue their good run this year and the seniors have a right go of it. Jedobi (Wexford) - Posts: 200 - 02/06/2024 17:20:01 2548930 Link 0 |
Hopefully! But we have only 1 AI at any level since before I was born. 1968 was the last before that. We haven't even reached many AI finals let alone won them in my lifetime. So we are going to have to change that first.
