Limerick Clare candidate eliminated on the first court, by the looks of things. Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 3875 - 24/04/2023 10:48:45 2473119 Link 2 |
Waterford support has always been poor. They just never brought a big crowd. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1259 - 24/04/2023 11:12:49 2473145 Link 2 |
Any word on Leinster hurling attendances? centrefield99 (Galway) - Posts: 136 - 24/04/2023 14:41:41 2473292 Link 1 |
Any Galway based 'lunatic' that wanted to see the Galway u20s play Wexford recently had to drive to Carlow to see it. A pertinent point surely about 'Leinster hurling attendances'!!

I was at it and couldn't really put a figure but there wasn't that much at it. Was frickin baltic there too. I hate Pearse stadium. Galway9801 (Galway) - Posts: 1942 - 25/04/2023 10:56:47 2473608 Link 1 |
What's the alternative? It should probably have been played in Portlaoise, but it had Dublin footballers in town on Sunday. Thurles, busy on Sunday. Tullamore probably had football and/or McDonagh cup. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1259 - 25/04/2023 11:01:32 2473615 Link 1 |
That u20 game was initially down for Portlaoise but moved as the Laois u20s had a knockout home game. Same with Tullamore Offaly had a home game there Friday evening.

Sligo should be pushing for home venue for Connacht final. Markievicz well able to hold crowd expected. It is their turn to have "home" advantage. Current crowd for Galway Sligo fixture is well down on the past. Would be a cracking atmosphere too. 12k to 15k in Castlebar won't look nearly full and not a great look for a Connacht final. The Hyde would be better thedreamer (Sligo) - Posts: 52 - 25/04/2023 12:04:52 2473652 Link 1 |
Home/away doesn't apply for Finals involving Sligo or Leitrim. Anyway Lord Prenty needs to help Mayo CB with their debt oroblem. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1960 - 25/04/2023 13:08:10 2473688 Link 1 |
Well with current attendances well down and only 15k max heading to Castlebar... Why not push for home venue as it is Sligo's turn against Galway. I'm sure Galway fans would enjoy a cracking atmosphere in Markievicz park as oppossed to half full Mchale park

Reckon Gaa are losing revenue on this one. Castlebar 15k max..... Sligo 18k (sell out) I reckon more Sligo people will go to game if it was in Markievicz

Same with Clare in Ennis, you could have close to a sellout if Clare Vs Kerry in Ennis.

Sligo and Clare should be allowed to host provencial football finals at their home venues. It makes more sense and would add to the occassion. It would obviously have to be a home and away arrangement but the GAA should change it for future years. centrefield99 (Galway) - Posts: 136 - 26/04/2023 01:50:51 2473860 Link 0 |
Galway Wexford about 4k to 4.5k . max I'd say. Never saw Salthill as quiet either before or after a match , the couple of GAA pubs in the area that do well on match days were full but not overflowing onto the street , and got immediate service in the takeaway after the match which usually never happens either!

No issue with that. I notice the Galway football support has increased a lot under PJ going by season tic holder numbers plus a greater casual fan now travelling. Small core always there mind you. Sligo on an upward curve but I agree Markievicz would be full and rocking for the provincial final. Mad how support swings up and down for all counties depending on their success. I don't agree with the post that Waterford never brought big support. I was at a match as far back as 2001 in PUC against Limerick Munster semi) and they had huge support as did Limerick who had just earlier beaten Cork in the q/f. Look at Wexford. Often brought big numbers but as noted by another poster has dipped a lot. The attendance at Pearse Stadium was poor from both sides (I know it was a Saturday) but not on 'free' TV and was a critical game for one of the top two placings. At the Hyde on Sunday it was on TV yet a very decent crowd turned up.

Does Markievicz hold that? Seems smaller than the Athletic grounds and I thought that was around 18k.

I'm pretty sure 18k is the capacity. Even with 15k in it, it would be some atmosphere

A ten-year project to redevelop Markievicz Park completed work in 2009 and cost €2.4 million. This raised the safe capacity from 10,500 to 18,558 (3,585 seated under a covered stand, 14,936 standing terraced and 37 disabled spectator places).[2]

Poor crowd alright. Galway in recent years had a decent following
