one of the best Gaelic Footballers ever, he got the better of all the top forwards he came up against. wasted last year in full back line, he needs the freedom of half back.

A phenomenal player and a man for the big occasion. When others were wilting he usually went up a level. I'm delighted to see Westport land a first senior county title. They've been coming for a few years, but making the breakthrough is never easy.
He didn't get the better of all the top forwards he came up against though. Shane Walsh gave him trouble on a few occasions including the 2020 Connacht final. He also struggled on Con when he got turned for 2 goals, but that was in the full-back line.

Be hard to begrudge him anything. Safe to say he be one of the more popular Mayo lads with both Dublin supporters and players. GPS thing was not taken that seriously!

The best player, along with Dermot Earley Snr, to never win an All-Ireland. A gent as well. He deserves any bit of success he gets.
It's a pity some interviewers persisted to ask him about his inter County future, rather than concentrate on yesterday's victory...

Brilliant player and while some above are picking holes in what he did and didn't do. He delivered on the biggest stage for club and county. Some of those All Irelands Mayo lost, Keegan was outstanding. It definitely was not down to him. He has done everything asked of him by a few different management's, man mark, full back line etc. I would say Mayos best ever

Watching him slumped on the ground banging the turf in frustration after their narrow loss to Dublin in 2017 was one of the most heart wrenching images I've seen in all my time watching gaa.
Wish him every success.

Alright saying that when it didn't affect the result, it would have been a different story then,
I thought that Keegan throwing his Gps at Dean Rock as he attempted to take a free kick to win the All Ireland was one of the lowest and unsporting acts I ever seen in an All Ireland final.
A great player and one of Mayo's best in recent history no doubt, sad that himself and many others from this modern era now retired failed to win the big prize with Mayo, so many heart-breaking defeats over the years for them.
It wasn't for want of trying and throwing everything at it by the likes of Lee Keegan anyway that failed to get them over the line on the big day.

Delighted Leeroy got his senior county medal. This is the aim and pinnacle of the vast majority of GAA club players. A great servant and outstanding footballer for Westport and Mayo for many years now. A gentleman of the field too.

Very fair comments. Both Walsh and Con won battles with him but he won out on other days against them. I stand to be corrected, but I don't think any Connaught player or any defender from anywhere has more Allstars and all were deserved, he could even have more. This year he was selected on the team of the league and backed it up with some outstanding attacking in the championship as well as pocketing Jimmy Hyland and Paudie Clifford. Mayo's best since 1966 when I started watching.

If that's the best club team in the county then the state of Mayo football is worse than I thought.

Embarrassing stuff.

Poor alright. If you think Mayo football is embarrassing though then a lot of other counties are in trouble. I thought senior club football this year in the county was poor. That happens though. Ballintubber we're well beaten one year. It does not reflect the county team.

True, Yew Tree. A county's club scene in a given year is not necessarily tied to the county team's progress. I'm really surprised that Westport capitulated like that. They've plenty of talent, practically all have played for Mayo at different grades. Ballina or Castlebar might have put up a better battle. Moycullen were pushed hard in a number of games in Galway. Considering Moycullen were without Peter Cooke yesterday, they are building nicely and could go a long way.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

When a club wins there first County title it is like they have reached the promised land. Celebrations etc take over and i wouldn't say the Westport lads did a whole lot of analysis work in Liverpool last weekend. How good would Moycullen have been if they had to play a couple of weeks after their first County?

The other point to note, From a county team perspective it is better to have a competitive county championship than one super dominant team. We won a lot of club all Irelands in both codes in Galway and it does not always translate to county in our experience!!

Indeed I think the celebrations last a long time in Westport and rightly so. A stag last weekend in Liverpool wouldn't have been ideal prep. Moycullen though by far the better team. Has that Dessie lad that kicked 0-10 yesterday been in the Galway panel at all?

He's on the panel and actually started against yourselves in the 2020 Connacht final. He kicked an early score in that match from what I remember. He had a brilliant year for Moycullen in 2020 when they won their first county title. He racked up big scores from play and frees. I think he scored at least 1 goal in every match.
That got him into the county panel and team for that Covid championship, which started and ended for us in 1 match in the Connacht final.
He's been excellent again this year and was unmarkable when Moycullen beat Corofin in the group stage.
He has a lot of qualities. The problem with intercounty today is there's only room for a very small number of out and out scoring forwards.
Rob Finnerty was doing well in that role for us this year, but Dessie definitely deserves to be tried again.
