Hope it didn't come across as disparaging. What I meant is that those in particular fit into a seperate category. They aren't as experienced as Jacko, etc. but can't be regarded as newcomers either. Have been involved in panels is more accurate. By the way, some of the elder statesmen for the Cats showed up last night too. Thought Buckley was outstanding when he came in, and is perhaps one of the more under-rated players from this era. Walsh's best position is centre-back. It was noticeable that they were running the ball more as well, and seem to be moving away from the more direct style under Cody, although probably too early to tell for sure. beano (Wexford) - Posts: 1493 - 22/01/2023 14:15:52 2453398 Link 0 |
Lyng had their u20 teams playing a shorter game. We were noticeably more direct than Kilkenny which was a change from the Offaly game. Lawlor hit most of his puckouts long to the left half forward position which was a pity as one of the strengths of Cartys game is his stick passing forwards. He set up a few points in the Offaly game and scored also but despite getting open for numerous puckouts last night he just didn't get targetted. He did get a point but other runs forwards into space got missed. Maybe as the League starts we might mix it up a little more.

I am presuming by my own calculations it's a galway v wexford walsh final. Because offaly beat laois and wexford will go through on the head to head against kilkenny. Wexpurebred (Wexford) - Posts: 205 - 22/01/2023 15:42:30 2453408 Link 1 |

Correct Walsh Cup final is Wexford v Galway next Sunday in Croke Park at 3pm.

Would it make more sense for the league game in 2 weeks to double up as the Walsh Cup final, we were meant to be playing Waterford in a challenge game next Friday, probably prefer that than the same opposition twice. TerribleFootwork (Wexford) - Posts: 1760 - 22/01/2023 16:14:16 2453416 Link 0 |
Saturday before Dublin and Kildare in football league.

Wexford could always pull out of the Walsh Cup, like certain countries did in the O'Byrne Cup.

Surely a semi competitive game in Croke Park would do far more for the new lads and the panel as a whole than a challenge game against Waterford?

Playing the same team 2 weeks in a row will be strange though, we're playing galway in the league in 2 weeks time.

Early in the year but delighted with last night. Saturday in the final give the new lads the game hunting (Wexford) - Posts: 1135 - 22/01/2023 17:40:29 2453451 Link 0 |
The more times we play them the better for our lads before the round robin. Along with Kilkenny they are the best team we can play in competitive, or at this stage semi competitive, games. Galway will surely feel the same. I've been to numerous challenge games and tbh a good As v Bs training game will have more cut to it.

He's consistent and right on this one lad. Only thing that really matters firstly is the Leinster championship. Then hopefully the AI series. Sorry for being old fashioned and all that.

County board have requested that the league game doubles up as Walsh Final, depends now if Galway agree, heard on south radio in the last hour. TerribleFootwork (Wexford) - Posts: 1760 - 22/01/2023 18:48:14 2453469 Link 0 |
He was right but he was contradicting the comments be made 2 weeks ago.

Think they might double up the League game and Walsh Cup final as one fixture. According to reports the county board are seeking that. It would make sense really. If the request is refused we would go to croker next week with probably a very weak team. Same for Galway of course and then play each other again the following weekend. Common sense should prevail. An extra incentive to beat Galway at home too in first league game, a chance to get a cup at the end of it.

I was going to reply him/her, then I couldn't be arsed. My comment was a tongue in cheek remark. But I did find it slightly odd for someone to start quibbling about upcoming fixtures after their county had got to a final. With regards to Walsh Cup Final and the first NHL game a week later, it will be interesting to see how Egan and Shefflin approach both games. Will there be much difference in the starting 15s in both matches? Or will the result of the first game effect the starting 15 for the second game (probably)?
