Yes. With the playing numbers he's picking from, and therefore the 26 man panel he would have had, I was amazed they won it when it went to extra time. And apart from having a better panel on paper I think Offaly would've been back to 15 in Extra time. His record at club was very good too, winning a Kilkenny Senior Championship with Clara, and winning a Leinster Senior Club title with MLR. A lad who is on the St Mullins backroom team told me he is really well thought of by the players up there too, but that he was unlikely to leave Carlow this summer. More discrimination against dual clubs! From the organisation who are supposed to be promoting both codes equally.

He had a good track record on the club scene before the weekend, Kilkenny title with Clara, Leinster title with Mount Leinster Rangers and Intermediate All Ireland with Naas, 12 of Carlow's starting 15 came from 2 clubs so to win Joe McDonagh with resources like that is serious going.

He also did well with our 2018 u21 team, around half of whom are currently on our Senior panel.

Does anybody know how long he signed on for with Carlow ? Afinestick (Wexford) - Posts: 999 - 02/06/2023 12:11:17 2483557 Link 0 |
Not sure but he was on the management teams under Colm Bonnar and Liam Dunne.

If his time is up with Carlow then we should go after him. If he has another year to go with them then to try coax him away would be wrong in my opinion. He might want to stay where he is and try to get Carlow to the next level.( that would be a tough job). Mullaly certainly has the credentials with a sackful of success stories. Skippy Ruth is another that comes to mind. If the cb want to go local then he might be a good choice. Passionate hurling man who could get the best out of the players. However I still think they will give Egan another year. Interesting weeks ahead I should think. Likely would have been 2 years? Not sure though. Skippy did well with his club and is a famous Wexford ex-hurler. If they give Egan another year it will be interesting to see has he learnt much from this year. He is far from a fool. I would hate to have to decide who the manager should be in real life! Think he won with Naas as well

Thanks for sharing! To be honest we did look much the better team really for most of it but any time our defence was ran at we were in serious trouble. DOK to mention one getting a lot of praise for his performance was ran through for two goals. Something that needs to be addressed before next season. I'd seriously consider moving Liam Ryan out of full back for the league next season. I think he can offer a lot more further out the pitch and stabilise that defence. Simon Donohue very good again and probably our most consistent performer this season in the games I saw. He has improved an awful lot since he first came on the county season, some more naturally talented players in that squad should take note. Delighted for the likes of Dunbar and Hearne who made key contributions at the end.

In fairness, I don't think.anyone said a change of manager would mean everything is alright, it would help but wouldn't solve everything that for sure..

When Oylegate win the county final this year, Des will be on the top of the list for Wexford manager. WEX98 (Wexford) - Posts: 514 - 03/06/2023 07:50:51 2483650 Link 0 |
Personally I'd like to see Tom Mullally take over for next year with the likes of Keith Rossiter on the back room team, another name that hasn't been mentioned is Derek McGrath not sure about his style though WexMurph (Wexford) - Posts: 275 - 03/06/2023 09:21:32 2483652 Link 0 |
Agreed Simon is definitely the most improved player over the last couple of years. Thought Shane wasn't quite as good this year as last. Ryan looked what he was for most of the championship, injured. He was moving better against Kilkenny though. Damien was unlucky with injury and really missed the whole championship. Hopefully if Egan stays he will now realise just how good a player Kevin is as an orthodox midfielder and a sitting one. He never seemed to trust him and Kevin's play suffered as a result. Conor Devitt has improved also, although Matthew wasn't as good after the ankle injury against Cork. Thought Carty had a good year for his first year, and bulked up a fair bit over the course of the season also. Conor Foley plays with great heart and hopefully with a bit more experience will learn not to overcommit as much. His block at the end was excellent, but he jumped wrong side of Tom Phelan for the goal trying to win the ball in, and Phelans point immediately before that. As JJ Doyle said at the coaching session at our club during the week sometimes you have to realise you just aren't going to get to the ball 1st and prepare to block the forward before he gets any momentum built up. JJs session was excellent, loads of good drills, and advice, and delivered in an easy to understand way. Funny F####r as well! Joe looked rusty but hopefully after a club championship and a proper pre season he can come back better next year. He was out for a year and half effectively. If Cian Molloy and AJ committed it would help our back 6 also, Jack Cullen also but I fear he's not going to commit. The 4 backs from this years u20s who aren't u20 any more should be getting a good look at during the club championships and preseason, Carley, Dundon, Murphy and Kehoe. Conor Firman was also on the panel start of the year. Hopefully Gavin Bailey has a good club championship for Ferns also, and David Clarke and Niall Murphy stick with their S and C programmes and have a good club championship also. Of all the players above only Matthew will be 30 or more next year so we should be OK for backs for a few years if we can get everyone fully fit and get more S and C work and Senior hurling games into the younger and newer lads. It would be great to see you do it WEX98. And yes that would be a great achievement for Des if you do.

Wouldn't want Derek far to wedged to his system, Harriers improved last year when they abandoned it.
