The All-Ireland finals should move to August at the very least. Start the leagues at the beginning of March. September to February for the club championships. A middle ground comprise.

Was that countrywide or just in Dublin Barney?

I'd say you would have the CPA refounded in no time. Why should club players play only September to February? What about club players who are at college? What about the Fitzgibbon and Sigerson cups? When do you plan downtime for lads who play intercounty, all of whom play for their clubs also?

Countrywide.

Cost of living crisis could be a factor too, also a defined calendar full all players is more important metric for me than something like this.

The Christmas present season should give jersey sales a boost.

For sure. Club players, and especially underage ones, are infinitely more important to the GAA than jersey sales. The jerseys are too expensive and getting updated every year. It's scandalous carry on.

Something like most of population not knowing GAA exists as a national sport for 6 months? The only thing most people will know about Croke Park in future is that it hosts soccer, rugby, concerts, and whatever.

If we don't look after club players there won't be any intercounty players any month of the year never mind 6 months. Maybe there are too many intercounty games and it's taken too seriously with players not being released back to the clubs between intercounty games. Was much easier to please everyone when the League was run in the winter, and the championship was knockout and so had fewer games, allowing players to be releasedback to the clubs. Club Championships could be run off between April and September and all Ireland intercounty finals could happen in September also. If we are to continue with the number of intercounty fixtures as they are, and no players being released back to clubs between championship games on account of intercounty training, then the only way it was possible to fit it all in was to finish the intercounty earlier. Or maybe split the championship season the other way round and run the intercounty Championships July- September after the club championships. Unless you can magic up 70 or 80 weekends in the year Barney? What do you propose yourself? I'd hate to be on any kind of fixtures committee! Exaggerate much, Barney???? Fact of the matter is that the split season brings benefits galore for anybody actually involved in the GAA, or with a genuine interest in it. Only people still railing against it are a reducing number of media pundits, and big day county team bandwagonners, which you appear to be yourself. Well I suppose I'd better wait another 50 years to develop a "genuine interest" and become "actually involved in the GAA" and jump off the bandwagon before I express an opinion. Fair play to yourself, Not too many pikemen lived to be over 200 :-) BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3464 - 17/11/2022 11:59:59 2447904 Link 0 |
Not really any concrete proposals about how you think the season should be structured there Barney?

Yeah, go ahead, Barney - Tell us how exactly you'd arrange the season, bearing in mind the different needs, structures, traditions, etc., of every county (of which some have a dual outlook, and some don't)? Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2833 - 17/11/2022 13:00:28 2447915 Link 0 |
If the county season wasn't condensed into a few months there'd be plenty of time to release players back to club. What's the rush to get intercounty out of the way, maybe to free up Croke Park for marketing. You don't need 70 or 80 weeks, unless there were that many before all these changes.

Yes but the problem was intercounty managers wouldn't do it. Cody was one of the last to do so n a regular basis. Why do you think the CPA were formed?
Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 15509 - 18/11/2022 07:19:30 2447992 Link 1 |
The solution then was to prevent inter county managers "owning" the players for the year. That is only a recent innovation. I recall seeing Dublin lads belting the lard out of one another in club games here in Dublin in the 70s and early 80s and then togging out for county the week after. The reference above to marketing contains much of the answers to all of this. Where are the CPA by the way? Another stalking horse for changes that have made not one whit of difference to 95% of club players. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3464 - 18/11/2022 09:41:45 2448002 Link 1 |
The CPA disbanded itself when the split season was approved. Do keep up! Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2265 - 18/11/2022 11:43:46 2448026 Link 0 |
I haven't made up my mind on this yet. It's important to not have knee jerk reactions. We should give it 3 seasons and assess whether it has been positive or negative liosbreac6265 (Longford) - Posts: 256 - 18/11/2022 12:14:00 2448032 Link 0 |
Did you ever hear the term "rhetorical question"? Strange you do not hear from them any more about all the concerns they had about lads hurling junior ... in November :-) BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3464 - 18/11/2022 12:23:01 2448033 Link 0 |
Yes they did. Club players now have certainty to plan their fixtures. And I remember back in the 90s it was the same as regards County players playing club matches during the intercounty season. Do you want to go back to the days when most counties only had 1 or 2 championship games each year? Because that was the only thing that made that possible!!!
