Armagh Vs Galway

Replying To yew_tree:  "I'm from south Mayo so the rivalry with Galway is intense but in my experience not hateful. I know a few absolute tools of fans on both sides. If you didn't have rivalry though it would be no fun.

I'll support Galway on Sunday. I hope a few Galway fans will stick around to shout for Mayo after although I know if we were the first game I'd probably want to get on the road back asap with it being a Sunday.

It really is pot luck who you get stuck sitting near. I've encountered the good, the bad and the ugly from most counties and I'm sure they will say the same about us.

Mayo do have a huge bandwagon though many of whom are living outside the county. Probably explains who we don't see them at club games in their droves.

I think it's a lot easier to stick around for the 2nd game if your own teams wins. When you lose Croke Park is the worst place in the world to be and you just want to get home."
Very fair an accurate assessment and I agree with and appreciate your sentiments.
Regarding folk living outside the county , I know a number of big time Mayo fans who live in Dublin and go to all the Mayo games but also make time to go to club games whenever they are down west. Similar for Galway people living in Dublin.
But I also know quite a lot who live in Mayo , go to every Mayo game, who you never see at club games.
In general when I go to Galway games , and when I see people I know, they are people who I would often see at club games too. That's a personal observation, maybe I'm wrong or over exaggerating it.

Could be the clash of the round, down to the wire, slightly favour Armagh.

What has Kevin Walsh against Paul Conroy?

Did any of you hear Off the ball? What's the story with K.Walshe? Do I detect bitterness? Does he not rate Paraic Joyce? And the criticism of Conroy??

I am beyond excited about this game. Think it will be a cracker.

Both teams have serious talent and also some weaknesses. I think when it is over some team will have taken their goal chances and the other will have not. Simple as that.

Both have struggled against the high press on kick outs however Galway have done relatively well on the long kick out.

From a Galway point of view all the talk was of Comer/Walsh/Conroy axis pre CF. Finnerty/McDaid & Pa Kelly really stood up in that game. And I think for both teams the supporting cast to the star players will be hugely important. They generally get the little bit of space and are they good enough to use it.

The winner of this game will kick on.

I don't think he has anything against either of them to be honest. From the various podcasts I've heard with Kevin Walsh since he finished with Galway, he has always come across as very direct, whether it's talking about Galway or any other team.
Whereas a lot of pundits will be a bit softer when it comes to individuals they know from their own county, KW seems to take the same approach regardless.
It can come across as cutting at times, but I believe he's just giving his honest opinion.
I would say however, that he probably is still a bit hurt about the way things finished. 2019 was extremely disappointing and not a proper reflection of the gradual progress which had been made in previous years.
I'd assume he probably isn't too fond of the general media narrative that he had us playing extremely negative football, and that Joyce was going to liberate us and get us playing lovely free-flowing stuff again.
The truth is in the middle. We are kicking the ball more now and moving it up the pitch more quickly, but at the same time we're trying to build a defensive system to make us harder to beat.

Replying To GreenandRed:  "Both teams play great football when they're allowed to. Armagh need to show consistency beyond two wins in a week against, on the day, poor opposition. There seems to be a lot of expectation after those games but previously consistency wasn't great. I think there's more scope in the Galway defence to keep Armagh attack a bit quieter than Armagh's defence to keep Galway attack quieter. Galway might add to Conroy, Walsh, Comer, Finnerty scoring threats and Armagh will be on the back foot more than they're used to. Curbing Rian O'Neill's influence and not giving away many scorable frees is key. Don't think it'll be as high scoring as some are predicting but will still be a great game of football. Galway by 3."
A lot made of how good Armagh are but as you say, Tyrone were rubbish and Donegal didn't score for over 30 minutes after scoring 9 in less than 20 minutes. Plus Tyrone let a average footballer in Campbell run riot . Galway for me for that reason .

A good point was made on the OTB pod. This is a game that Shane will love. Its a game where he can really cement his status alongside Clifford and Con as the best footballers in the country. He knows the country are talking about him and are expecting him to do big things, and do you know what...I think he just might.

Fortunately, your predictions for Galway so far in this year's championship have been off.
What makes you think he'll go hiding? In his last championship game in Croke Park, he was giving Mayo fits before having his shoulder dislocated before half-time.
One thing about Shane Walsh is that for better or worse he won't go hiding. In the 2020 Connacht final he dragged us back into the game with some great scores, and then missed those almost impossible frees from the sideline late on. It probably wasn't the right call to take them on, but he certainly didn't shy away from them.
He was carrying a back injury from this year's league, but still stepped up to nail 3 big frees/45s against Mayo in Castlebar. We needed every one of them, as it turned out.
His goal against Roscommon was important as it was good, as it gave us a bit of lead in what was a tight game up to then. He scored a few great points too.
He may or may not have a big game on Sunday, but it won't be because he's hiding. That's not his nature.

Fancy Dan! Have you seen his scoring rate over the last few seasons? I think Walsh is going to relish Croke Park now, he's at the right time in his career, right level of maturity and just needs to increase ball possessions and get on the ball pretty much constantly rather than every 7 or 8 mins. Can't wait to see him and the lads at full tilt up there.

He's played well all year . No reason to believe he won't do it in the QF

Armagh will have a strategy for keeping him quiet as we will have with Rian O Neill. I still think Shane will get some joy from them.

Gallway have been talked about a long time seems to me, I wouldn't be too excited about Armagh they didn't look much of a team when we beat them in Ballybofey,
Tyrone were half asleep and the mismanaged Donegal team they beat in the qualifier game were not recovered from the shambolic performance in the Ulster final,
I nearly spilt my coffee listening to Marty 'where's the party' on with Claire Byrne on RTE radio there and hour ago,
he said 'Kieran McGeeney is proving to a good manager' lol, well he's long enough trying anyway he had to get a bit of luck eventually I suppose.
Hard game to call, draw maybe?

100% agree. Great opportunity for him, has it all but there will always be question marks about his temperament until he does it consistently on the big day. Nice handy free early on would help.

On that Connacht final incident, I once saw Noel Connelly try something similar with Ja Fallon back in the mid 90s, I was a teenager at the wire in Tuam. Ja picked him up like a rag doll and threw him into the ground. Ja was another man who got better as the year went on and always and i mean alway delivered in the biggest days. Shane Walsh needs to do the same.

So off I went to listen to this podcast . Shocked that KW would come off as having a dislike for Conroy. A man he almost always started when fit

KW when asked about walsh , conroy and Comer says that ultan harney kicked 3 points off of conroy and that needs to be looked at . That was it . That was the comment. Then later the hosts circle back and ask him specifically about conroy and his defensive play and he says Conroy was one of the lads at fault for the Roscommon goal and said again it needs to be looked at.

So that's all that was said about Conroy in a 20 plus minute chat. Absolutely pathetic to make something of it.

Thankfully the players stay off social media during the lead up to games because I'm sure there's some fool on twitter who has said kw was attacking Conroy. It wouldn't be great for Conroy to hear that a man he played under for years and was selected to be captain for was having a go at him

Shane Walsh is a class footballer. He may win the game for Galway but if Galway lose it won't be because of Shane Walsh if that makes sense. Others need to step up. My concern if I was Galway fan would be their defence is still conceding too much. If Galway can match the Armagh intensity and not let Rian run riot I see them winning by 2-4 points.
