Armagh Vs Galway

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I'm choosing to be optimistic for once. All though this can certainly go either way I reckon Galway just about. We are better on the opposition KO than our own and I think that's still a weakness for Armagh, might just be the difference.

Both teams play great football when they're allowed to. Armagh need to show consistency beyond two wins in a week against, on the day, poor opposition. There seems to be a lot of expectation after those games but previously consistency wasn't great. I think there's more scope in the Galway defence to keep Armagh attack a bit quieter than Armagh's defence to keep Galway attack quieter. Galway might add to Conroy, Walsh, Comer, Finnerty scoring threats and Armagh will be on the back foot more than they're used to. Curbing Rian O'Neill's influence and not giving away many scorable frees is key. Don't think it'll be as high scoring as some are predicting but will still be a great game of football. Galway by 3.

They will set up the double sweeper and hope Armagh kick aimless ball into them and/or shoot from too far out. They will hope to take the lead and then try to spend the second half faking injuries and delaying the clock to frustrate Armagh. Hoping Armagh lose their head.

The reality is Defensive football is not in Galway's nature, all Armagh have to do is hold their nerve and keep their patience. The above game plan will fall apart in the 2nd half as Galway tire and their will be an opportunity for Armagh to win as Galway tire.

If Galway come out and try to match Armagh with open football they will be murdered as they haven't a decent man marking defender in the entire county."
That bait might work in Lough Conn or Lough Mask, but you'll have to try harder to get a bite from the Corrib....

Armagh to win for me. Really looking forward to seeing 2 special forwards in action on opposing sides in Shane Walsh and Rian O'Neill. They are key for both Galway and Armagh as whenever they play well the team plays well.

Question for Mayo folks in attendance will they be cheering for Galway or just not bother?

Bookies cant separate the 2 teams, i wouldnt be surprised if it goes to extra time.

Looking like Sunday is going to be a sell out, should be a great atmosphere.

I'm going to give Galway the slight edge here because i think they have a better system of play and structure to their team than Armagh and Cian O'Neill has been a good addition to the Galway management team.

Armagh look more like a moments team. Unlike most Ulster teams they don't put a big focus on defence and that could well suit Galway counter attacking game.

I'll be cheering for Galway. Hoping to get in for throw-in in that match. Ye have some class footballers. But I'd question yer consistency and ability to keep a lead until the final whistle. A bit like us but ye have quality forwards.

Majority will be shouting for Armagh I'd say. Probably not openly cheering while dressed in Mayo gear but internally at least. The opposite will also be true of a portion Galway fans in the second game, although to a much lesser extent. The majority of Galway fans usually shout for Mayo, at least against the big powerhouses of Dublin and to a lesser extent, Kerry.

Well the older school lads like myself and the Galway lads I know, and our mates from Mayo would always cheer on another Connacht team. Not sure what the millennials will do! Up Galway and Mayo on the day. We might be at each other's throats another day!

You should have passed on your extensive knowledge on Galway football to James Horan a few weeks back!!
How about a game plan for Mayo to beat Kerry?

I don't think I have been as apprehensive/excited about a game since '01. Its great to be involved in these crunch championship matches as the build up to the games the week of is something special.

In regards to the result, the bookies cant split the two teams and you can see why. A lot depends on how Galway have used the break because momentum at this end of the championship is a dangerous weapon to face.

I personally feel that Galway can hope to keep the Armagh forwards reasonably quieter than they would ours. Lets hope for a similar performance from Walsh and Comer to the first half of the Connacht final up there last year. Too much focus on Walsh and Comer could see a Finnerty or Tierney really get the space to shine.

It goes without saying that Armagh have some dangerous forwards of their own. A big performance at the back will be needed and here's hoping that this is a game where the backs can really come of age, I'm hopeful.

Cant wait till Sunday to be amongst the atmosphere in HQ. Here's hoping its celebratory pints on Sunday evening and not drowning the sorrows wondering where it all went wrong.

You half answered your own question. There will be 3 categories of Mayo supporters.
1. Genuine football people who will support Galway out of loyalty to Connacht football - probably about 30%
2. Those who dont really care and will probably be in the pubs around Dorset St until shortly before the Mayo game. Great supporters of Mayo but very single minded - many don't even support club football in Mayo , so wouldn't expect them to support Galway. About 50-60%
3. Those who would rather see England win SAM rather than Galway. A small number , maybe 10% to 20% but potentially more vociferous than category 1 .

Don't get me wrong, probably a similar type of breakdown of Galway support for Mayo. Although the overall numbers are lower , with less in percentage terms in Group 2, i.e. a larger percentage of a ( smaller ) total in Galway are out and out football people i.e. support clubs also ( i hasten to add that I am not saying more people in Galway support club its just that the overall number in Mayo is swelled by people in group 2).
I would also think that the split between 1 and 3 is very geographic i.e close to both borders there are more in category 3, further away from the county border there is , i expect , more in category 3/

From looking at the predictions, a lot of people from division 1 counties are predicting a Galway win after a tight match, but a lot of the division 2 lads (cork and Meath mainly lmao) are saying Armagh will sweep us away, I can't get over that.

Lads did ye honestly think ye had a chance against us based on the PUC game? One of the most overrated teams, yet ye consistently underrate us.

Depends on where in Galway you're from I think. If you're on the border like myself and went to school with them all there is no way you would be seen shouting for Mayo. The rivalry runs deep down around the Headford/Caherlistrane/Shrule/Kilmaine area, and I wouldn't change it for the world.

I'd agree with the last piece there for sure. In Connemara you'll find that a much greater proportion have an affinity with Mayo. There are strong links between communities out here and places like Tourmakeady up as far as Achill and Belmullet. We share a very similar history of mass emigration too.
North Galway, which is of course the traditional football heartland, has the strongest rivalry with Mayo from what I've seen.

No.2 with regards to Mayo fans is a very good point. Mayo have a huge portion of their support who think they're diehards yet actually have little to no interest in football and wouldn't watch a non Mayo game if you paid them, and have no affiliation with clubs. However they go to all the Mayo games, partly for the community and social element. They would incorporate a lot of the fairer sex. That's why you have to take the "mayo have the best fans stuff with a pinch of salt". It's not exactly true football fans they've added to the mix there

The amount shouting for Armagh would be in the majority in would assume, although they're much more likely to be younger new age fans than the older ones who traditionally support whatever team comes out of the province

I'm from south Mayo so the rivalry with Galway is intense but in my experience not hateful. I know a few absolute tools of fans on both sides. If you didn't have rivalry though it would be no fun.

I'll support Galway on Sunday. I hope a few Galway fans will stick around to shout for Mayo after although I know if we were the first game I'd probably want to get on the road back asap with it being a Sunday.

It really is pot luck who you get stuck sitting near. I've encountered the good, the bad and the ugly from most counties and I'm sure they will say the same about us.

Mayo do have a huge bandwagon though many of whom are living outside the county. Probably explains who we don't see them at club games in their droves.

I think it's a lot easier to stick around for the 2nd game if your own teams wins. When you lose Croke Park is the worst place in the world to be and you just want to get home.
