Looking at the statement it doesn't actually say he has retired. It says he is stepping away for the coming season. Telling in my eyes.

It's a strange one. You would think with the new rules this year might suit him? But maybe it's something to do with management?

Do you think if there was a different Mayo manager in charge, this decision (stepping away or retirement) would not have happened.?
Still young enough and lots to offer a Mayo team imo.

I will just post again rather than reply separately lads if that's ok. Cillian is without doubt past his best and has had multiple injuries in the past few years so no guarantee he would be a starter.

My overall point here is that unless there is a revised statement then he is saying he is opting out this year rather than retiring. Taking a year out at this stage of his career would be very strange considering his injury profile and the little time he has left. His brother is obviously a huge part of the Mayo set up so if there is a problem with management it obviously isn't wholesale.

I think he would be annoyed at not getting more game time last year and i would say he is right to be in that regard. Still a serious finisher if he has the right players around him.

Fenton retiring at 31, O Connor stepping away for a year at the age of 32 and Murphy returning at the age of 35. Everything is gone a bit mad
I doubt if Cillian will return. He had a good run when he was in his prime but injuries have taken their toll and he is not the player he was. He will hardly return. Any reason why Aidan Orme and FionnMC Donagh have stepped away

Cillian might not be the only Mayo player stepping away.

Mayo county board only themselves to blame for sending out a questionnaire to the players and asking if they were happy with the current management not long after a last 16 exit in the championship.

He's only a few months older than Shane Walsh to be honest think it's prob time to move on from him anyway football wise he's huge mileage put in

Ohora also would probably have moved on from anyway.

mayo nvr short of good quality backs

O'Hora gone now. Others not confirmed. If Cillian was talking a year out to travel or due to work commitments then that would have been stated. It's a massive two fingers to the current management setup. Mayo won't be doing anything in 2025. Relegation from Div 1 wouldn't be a shock. Backwards we are going.

I assume O'Connor met with management and wasn't happy with what he was told in terms of the game time he was likely to see in 2025? Would that be the general feeling?

James Carr, Plunkett confirmed tonight. Tommy Conroy out injured until late spring another blow.

The Conroy injury is the one that concerns me most.
Plunkett was never good enough, Carr has unfortunately been plagued by injury. O'Hora was overrated by many Mayo fans. I thought Cillian would have been good as an impact sub. Aidan O Se will also miss the first few league games as he is away traveling.

If O'Hora hadn't ponytail and tattoos he'd not have half the hype good player but Callanan mchugh O'Brien are better players who should be given leadership roles.

Carr was mercurial and on his day hard to keep a handle on.

Disappointing to hear conroy out as was coming back to himself hopefully not the knee.

As a Galway man, you ever liked to see Cillian with the ball in his hands. Generally only one outcome. I think score getters are not always appreciated in counties but they are the lads that will get you over the line.

Personal level, sad to see him go but as a Galway man, I am delighted to see the back of him and that says it all about how good he was.

"A year out" at 33 is madness for an injury ravaged player the last few years. Dont get me wrong was a great player but he has been injury ravaged and game time very much limited. Dont know why he just does not retire. Dont see him returning at 34/35 considering his age injuries

It's the knee I'm afraid. Lad has zero luck.

I fear Tommy Conroy is a player that got a name as an early riser but now sleeps in till mid-day.

Plunkett was starter on the Mayo 2013 minor and 2016 U21 All Ireland winning teams so had to be more than decent.
