Only player deserving of playing county football in Junior last year is Conor Leonard who's been unlucky with injuries. Oisin gleeson aswell pushing towards that level deserves a chance imo gave Jason Irwin a roasting last year which resulted in Irwin's boxing experience being brought into the game

Very enjoyable run out to be fair, the lads played some great football at times but have plenty to work on too. Still would like to see a settled no.6, the midfield partner for Mohan sorted, and more scores co.ing from Garland-Jones-Mooney. Great to have a trophy coming home at the end of the evening, but the low key celebrations were good to see. A great 2nd half last night. From a defensive point of view, possibly our best showing this year. Once Mohan got on top in midfield it gave our forwards the outlet they needed. It's hard to read too much into it. Roscommon were poor, as were Cavan, Louth, Meath, Westmeath and Cork when we beat them. But you can only beat whoever is in front of you. And one thing Gabriel Bannigan has brought to the team is a feel good factor. It's been a while since a Monaghan team has looked as comfortable on the ball as now. So the Championship should be interesting at the very least. SoNearYetSoFarney (Monaghan) - Posts: 56 - 30/03/2025 19:06:28 2599525 Link 1 |
I see the U20s thumped Cavan today in the replay

Yeah he's keeping very quiet alright. Lost in thought somewhere in his native Cavan !

Is this the best back handed compliment you can come up with. This is a new Monaghan team that should be carrying no baggage from the past, unlike your good self. They've done little wrong to date and with a few defensive tweaks, and additions, McCaul, Lavelle etc. I think there is potentially an All Ireland in them down the line There is one thing for sure, come July no team from Div 3 or 4 will win Sam. Play regularly against the best to beat the best. Division 1 is the place for us, or any small county, if we have any aspirations for championship success IMO mhunicean_abu (Monaghan) - Posts: 1063 - 31/03/2025 00:44:28 2599594 Link 1 |
It's up in derry, it's group stage then goes into knockout

We played in div 1 from 15 to 24 Longford beat us 2016 fermanagh 2017 down 2018 cavan 19 cavan 20 derry 22 all division 2, 3 and 4 we need to change our mentality and forget about league football we're obsessed with it whether you like to accept the facts or not we need to get to an ulster final which is probably better than 10 years in div 1 imo

Christ there are some miserable ***** on here. Nobody is suggesting that the win Saturday night is an indication that Monaghan are among the frontrunners for Sam, far from it. But at the end of the day it's a national final, and we don't win enough trophies in Monaghan to turn our nose up at that. The lads did it in impressive fashion and I was happy to see the subdued celebrations at FT, as this group know they can achieve more and that's what they're targeting. This group were in the top division for a decade and have bounced straight back, so this should have been the expectation really. patk (Monaghan) - Posts: 937 - 31/03/2025 11:55:03 2599659 Link 1 |
Is it not you who is obsessed with league football, you seem very put about by it. There are 2 routes to ultimate championship success, one through the Ulster Championship, the other through the league. The way the new format is, Ulster is no more a stepping stone than the league. It's value is not what it was, you think differently, that's fine. I believe being exposed to the best teams in the country on a regular basis has to have advantages, especially when it comes to the group stages of the championship Playing in Division 1 is not the reason we lost those matches you outlined, it was arrogance, some people difine it as not being able to carry the favourites tag, but it was arrogance, not respecting the opposition, happens against Cavan a lot. Also poor management on at least one occasion We'll have to agree to disagree, there's no reason in the world we can't strive to be successful in both league and championship mhunicean_abu (Monaghan) - Posts: 1063 - 31/03/2025 12:13:52 2599665 Link 1 |
Have to agree with you 100%. Those 10 years in Div.1 were better than a clatter of Ulster titles. Playing against the top teams in the country on a regular basis not only makes our players better but exposes our younger players and Juveniles to the game at the highest level. Already we can see the results at Minor and Under 20 level. Teams that are comfortable against the Kerrys Mayos and Tyrones. Juveniles who now dream of wearing the Monaghan jersey and are working hard to get there. I said in 2023 and 2024 on this site that Monaghan football was in a very good place and was laughed at by some of the whingers on here. I am convinced in the not too distant future the "glass ceiling" will be broken through and an All Ireland win will be celebrated by our county at one level or another.

Celebrating on a final day for staying in div 1 for years is not the stuff of a championship team we need to be more ruthless when it comes to championship and stop petting at teams we need hunger desire and more of a meaner streak to get where we need to go Farneyblueandwhite (Monaghan) - Posts: 33 - 31/03/2025 14:01:55 2599706 Link 1 |
And that is what you get playing regularly against the cut throat teams in Div. 1. Winning a championship in which some teams already don't give priority to and a competition which in a few years will not exist does not compare to the benefits of regular games against the Kerrys, Mayo and Dublins. Leave that other competition to the Cavans and their likes.

I do believe this team and management can win an ulster championship and get to an all ireland but for me there has been to much emphasis on league football for too long you don't see Tyrone donegal armagh losing to div 2 or 3 teams in the white heat of championship football its a struggle every year to stay in div 1 for monaghan and we get picked off by lesser teams come summer we are not cranking it up come summer but I think we are in the process of changing that as there is some fine ballers in monaghan Farneyblueandwhite (Monaghan) - Posts: 33 - 31/03/2025 16:49:40 2599755 Link 0 |
Jack plays his best football before the ground hardens and then he fades again the better teams . Jack is very skillful but lacks pace. Great win yesterday . Hope we give Ulster our best go because its 10 years since the Anglo Celt cup resided in Monaghan. Bernardo (Monaghan) - Posts: 609 - 31/03/2025 16:52:51 2599756 Link 0 |
