Replying To Claretandblue:  "Sean Leech an undoubted loss, hamstring and looks unlikely to feature in first three games at least. Decent looking team named as previous poster mentioned, Kildare favourites to regain Leinster title and think they reached All Ireland final last year, lot depends on how many players still underage. Kildare underage and schools football a distance ahead of rest of province in last 4/5 years, obviously Hasn't translated to senior set up yet. Hopefully we're competitive for long spells tonight, forwards look decent, not as confident about our defence."
Undoubted loss is right but good opportunity for others to step up. Team looks strong despite missing a few quality youngsters in my opinion such as Callum cruise of kinnegad, Eoghan hogan of lomans and the Shandonagh man jake Costello. Any word on young mulvihill of Shandonagh was a dominant force for years in underage would've expected to see him in the squad

Fantastic win by our 20s. Totally deserved, dominated second half, lost both midfielders to black cards in first half but kept lead to two points and took over with wind. Matthew Whittaker was superb, think he got 1-3, forwards very lively, subs did well too, Kildare shell shocked. Round Robin so they're not gone but brilliant display.

Brilliant result for u20s in terrible conditions. Whittaker excellent. Baker, scahill, killian, Daly and Cooney all stood up tonight. Hopefully leech will get back soon. Great credit to damien gavin and his backroom. I think top two qualify from this group so westmeath in a great position now. That kildare team were fancied for an all ireland considering Naas school recent success. They will still be in the mix. I'd expect to see some of the u20s that are on snr panel to feature against Tipp

Great result for the 20s coming from behind to beat Kildare 2:10 to 0:10 after what seemed to be a slow start based from the updates. Both midfielders getting first half black cards is interesting Anyone at the game?

Replying To Temple56:  "Some interesting stats on our u20 team for tonight:

18 different clubs represented in the whole panel.

11 different clubs represented in the starting 15

Caulry have the most players on the panel (5 players) this doesn't include Alan Maylnn who is Caulry free taker who is underage because he played u19s final last year.

Garrycastle are the only senior club not to have a player on the panel.

Two junior clubs are represented (St Joesphs and Multy)"
Great win tonight beating the defending champions in Kildare great boost for WH football.

I was at the game and felt ten foot tall going back up the road after seeing a gritty and determind performance from Westmeath in what must be said horrendous conditions. Whittaker was immense but every one of them stood out even Shane Corcoran when he came on and laid off a score . I think the Armagh game really stood to us going into last night. Id encourage everyone to get out and support this team. A bye in round 2 then home to Wexford on April 4th. Well done to Damien Gavin , his players and backroom.

Superb performance by the u20s-and considering they played most of the 1st half with 14 players aftet consecutive black cards.Very strong looking squad with a few more likely to come back in so hopefully they can continue on with a win against Wexford at home in 2 weeks.Well done management and squad on a huge effort and great win.

Serious performance last night.

Kildare were better team for 45 mins but when Westmeath turned it on they never looked in doubt.

Whittaker is a serious talent. Probably not too far off senior panel.

To put last nights win in to context Kildare were favourites to retain Leinster and they had 9 players starting last night that played in last years u20 all Ireland final.

Beat Wexford next time out and might be looking at a long run for our u20s

Do you think Kildare were better team for most part of game? We took awhile to get going but thought for the second half at least we were the better team and finished stronger. This Kildare team also beat Kerry in Killarney few ago and drew with Dublin too. Important that we go and beat Wexford as winner of the group plays the runner up in group with Meath, Longford , Carlow and Laois in quarter final on April 11th. Winners of other two groups go straight to semi finals but not looking beyond Wexford at home.

Anyone know who Esker Gaels are in the underage this year? Heard Maryland/Tang were fielding with Streamstown this year so maybe its them?

Fine display by under 20s, showed great heart and team spirit after an unconvincing opening 20 mins when we failed to score and Kildare unquestionably let us off the hook when we had two players binned, somehow we only trailed by 2 at the break, second half only looked like one winner after Briain Cooney's goal, Whittaker excellent but everyone contributed. Tackling was immense, Kildare never threatened a goal. Kildare still a threat as two qualify and they'll prob beat Wexford. A home quarter final presumably against a group runner up on the cards if we beat Wexford at home on Tuesday week. I certainly hope none of our 20s feature against Tipp, lots of lads on panel who need game time like Andy McCormack, Tom Molloy, Lorcan Dolan, Jonathan Lynam, Conor Dillon, Anthony McGivney, Trevor Martin, Jamie Gonoud and the Smith brothers if fit. Playing under 20s in a meaningless game would be wrong move.

... excellent result/performance for our U20s and Management/coaching team. Kildare were well fancied to win on home turf with 9x of starters from last years All Ireland. Its a very positive result and hopefully they don' get ahead of themselves now for the game v Wexford. Finishing top of the group should give them an easier route

Well done to all involved...

Was looking at the highlights of Fermanagh Game. Thefirst League game i missed this year. Can anyone tell me why James Dolan felt the need to scream in the Fermanagh Goalies face after Kevin Maguire scored the goal.

Why does that matter now? I expected the team to step up in the first 15 minutes of the second half but they didn't and that's where the match was lost. This team are struggling to win any tight match currently and that's what cost promotion to D2. All pressure is on Louth and their style of play will not suit Westmeath. They will be playing a similar system to Cavan, Down and Fermanagh.

Saying all that; a reset is needed and this team are capable of beating Louth if they approach that match with the correct attitude & they can park the league. A lot of these players got to Leinster finals after getting relegated to D3 & D4 in the league.
