I've a theory about smallish population counties like Westmeath. Is it because the young player base is diluted across too many high performing sports? For example, Rugby (CoE development underway in Mullingar), Soccer (Particularly Mullingar/Athlone), Hurling (Difficult to do dual GAA at county level particularly minor and above and yet WH are fighting at a high level relative to other smaller population counties, the only comparison being Offaly). Simply put, the player pipeline for GAA football in WH, Offaly is not as strong as it could be and will never be given the diversity of sport played in the counties. It simply comes down to numbers.

Totally agree but we are proud of being dual and competitive.Bucaneers in Athlone as well.Both teams losing a number of players through retirement/travelling makes 2025 a tough year.

Other counties don't allow dual players at minor level inter county, players simply choose, it's not an option playing both at under 20 inter county as demands are too great, if players had to choose one at minor level then hurling might suffer? Aaron Connaire, Podge Monaghan, Sean Byrne and Finn Higgins are all on both county minor panels. They're also involved with teams in the CBS in Mullingar, big commitment for them.

We had dual minors last year, but in 3 years time that will no longer be the case.
