Jack Cooney was suggested by the County Executive. 2 club delegates did the formal proposal and seconding to get it accepted. Make sure you know this is a county strategy. Don't be surprised if there are no suitable candidates identified for ratification and then the job is offered to Jack.

Give it to Damien Gavin. Greenandgoldie (Westmeath) - Posts: 152 - 15/08/2024 20:04:29 2565330 Link 0 |
Lads it won't be cooney. Fairly sure he can't with croke park and he's clever enough not to go back to a sinking ship

Damien got a fair crack with the 20s. What was the forward thinking behind his lengthy spell? Most inter county managers dont last any time. It would make perfect sense for him to be involved in some capacity. Nobody knows the 20-26 age group better than him really. We need a big name to galvanise the county or someone like Kevin O Brien from Corofin or Kimacud manager Robbie Brennan.

Interesting but another aspect is that Kinnegad have become the hardest team to watch in Western club football. Their championship matches are a bore fest, not sure would supporters want this style for Westmeath

The same approach that won us a Tailteann Cup , a Division 3 title and made us fairly competitive against the best teams in championship? Will we all bury our heads in the sand and pretend to believe Westmeath are an attacking team and will be going all out at teams next year?

Ohh its certainly not a job that a lot will be jumping at.

We didn't win a division 3 under Jack Cooney, it's fine if that style appeals to you but there's also a balance. It cannot be argued that Kinnegad are a hard team to watch, their own supporters are frustrated watching them.

Yes Westmeath did win a division 3 under Jack Cooney.

Forgot we won Div 3 with Jack before covid. We won Tailteann cup, 2 Division 3 titles as well as getting to All Ireland series back to back playing counter attacking football but this defensive shte as people would call ihas proved to be a winning formula. Jack has Kinnegad set up to play a counter attacking style and it got them toa county final for the first time in donkeys years. They dont have the scoring forwards Lomans have to win games but theyre defensively strong and difficult to breakdown. I understand supporters would find it hard to watch but I would rather my team set up in way that plays to their strengths and which gives them a best chance of winning. Anyhow going off on a tangent here as from what I hear from a county delegate is our next manager will be from outside the county.

Mickey Harte just announced as joint manager of Offaly. I really think we missed a trick here mintyfresh (Westmeath) - Posts: 240 - 19/08/2024 17:37:08 2565866 Link 0 |
Well it wont be Mickey Harte anyway who has linked up with Declan Kelly in Offaly.

We missed nothing, Harte's right hand man Gavin Devlin gone to Louth in a full time role, his coaching was lauded by all in Louth and in Derry, Offaly will get a good O' Byrne Cup run but that's all

How did we miss a trick?

100%. Regardless of what you think of Declan Kelly, the decision completely undermines him. Offaly have shafted their own and he will not be there for the long-term to benefit younger players. They won't get out of division three

I did a post last week, it's on the previous page about how I thought Harte would be a good appointment for us. That should explain why I said that.

Id take Harte in a heartbeat. 34 or 35 years coaching county teams, 6 all Ireland titles between minor, u21 and senior. He has been around the block and is arguably the greatest football manager. Kelly has a similar role to Devlin in Offaly overseeing development squads, he turned down the Offaly senior job before because of work commitments so maybe he himself feels he needs support to combine all. I dont see how it would undermine him. Offaly have a problem with some of their best players not committing to the jersey. If this doesnt motivate them then nothing will. One thing Louth and Offaly both have is great leadership from the top in chairmen like Peter Fitzpatrick and Michael Duignan. Louth were in division 4 when Harte came and look where they are now, a new stadium in the pipeline too. Offaly have won u20 football and u21 hurling All Irelands in space of 4 years. We cant even bring through players to play senior but hey we missed nothing here move on .

Apparently not liked by some players Kelly whether true or not don't know but heard from someone knows Offaly scene but they didn't want to get rid of him either

What makes you think it undermines Kelly?
