Best team won the Connacht Championship end of story. Knockmore clinging to wide count, Pearses far better, better defending to force them to shoot, Knockmore got a lucky goal. Pearses were 6 points plus the better team. Knockmore better I'm sure but definitely not today. smallfrank (Galway) - Posts: 505 - 09/01/2022 20:39:54 2394299 Link 1 |
Lets move on from the mountbellew thing. Going forward all good connacht GAA people should back Padraig Pearses in the quest for AI glory. I for one will. But before we close the chapter on mountbellew i think i have to have a final word on Barry McHugh. Barry is a super footballer and is a massive servant to mountbellew moylough. In 2021 he had a massive year and really was the biggest single contributor to bridging the 35 year gap. He has a habit of doing impetuous acts but he has always paid the price for this. These acts , whilst he has to take blame, have all been relatively harmless. For example when he shrugged off the Pearses keeper in the black card incident , there was no real risk of harm to the keeper. He didnt do a padraig o hora on it and drive him into the ground. Similarly he was wrong to push the ref after the connacht semi and will pay the price for that, but there was never a danger that jerome henry was going to have to visit roscommon general as a result of his actions. Unfortunately and deservedly he will serve a suspension, but i am looking forward to seeing his brilliance on the pitch again in the future.

A very well deserved win for Pearse's today. They looked a physically much stronger team than Knockmore and in Carey up front had the finisher that Knockmore lacked. He gave an exhibition of shooting today. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2318 - 09/01/2022 21:57:26 2394315 Link 1 |
Please lay off Barry McHugh and the other outstanding Mountbellew-Moylough players. They had every right to protest against the failure of the referee to give them fair play. It is regrettable that players who put so much into the game, are at the mercy of a referee. GAA referees should not be allowed to referee important senior matches unless they have established their knowledge, ability and competence.

I think you've quoted the wrong post there.

They'll get what they deserve.

I too hope they get what they deserve. No more , No less. There is a great opportunity for the disciplinary committee to give a pragmatic response to this. Give appropriate suspensions that are commensurate with the offences and not just lash out crazy suspensions in response to the publicity this has got. For starters, nothing less than a complete quashing of suspensions for those named who were completely innocent ( in these instances an apology would not go astray either) . For the others levels of suspension ( and in some cases heavy suspensions) are definitely required for the integrity of the game and as a future deterrent. But let the punishment fit the offence. anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 981 - 10/01/2022 14:45:35 2394409 Link 1 |
What about the punishment for the referee? Justice must be applied evenhandedly. He must be made accountable for his grave mistakes that caused Mountbellew-Moylough to lose such an important game. Is he going to be suspended from refereeing for 12 or 18 months? Is he to be required to undergo a training process to learn the rules of the game, such as for example awarding a free kick for a mark? When the referee is made answerable I'm sure any players who were provoked by the referee's appalling failures, will have no problem serving any reasonable punishment that fits their indiscretions, giving due weight to the extreme provocation that prompted their reaction.

I could'nt agree more but I think we'll be waiting a long time for any sanction to be made against the Ref. When the national league fixtures are announced in two weeks time it will be very interesting to see will he be on it and what level game he will get. In the perverse way that the GAA operates at times I would'nt be surprised to see him in Salthill. Getting back to the punishment issue, I think it will be very hard for the MM players to get justice after all the furore and the unjust if not downright illegality of leaking the ref's report before it was considered by the disciplinery body. I think it is time for the MM club to protect their players and to start thinking of hiring the guys with the wigs. That is the only way they will not be thrown to the wolves. seventyniner (Galway) - Posts: 41 - 12/01/2022 11:19:44 2394602 Link 1 |
So you want a ref banned for a year for getting one call wrong. Should a player who kicks a wide be banned for a year also? What about missing a penalty? Lifetime ban? SeanMacDiarmada (Leitrim) - Posts: 418 - 12/01/2022 12:43:24 2394615 Link 2 |
Can you please show me where anyone called for a years' ban for the referee as I seem to have missed it . There was also far more than one wrong call and all seemed to be going the same way.

Lads the M/M game has been done to death already. It was discussed in detail in the following weeks in this thread. Let it go now. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2318 - 12/01/2022 14:28:21 2394635 Link 1 |
Time for a few Galwegians here to mature and move on and stop trying to justify the misdeeds of yer County Champions by blaming the Ref. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2292 - 12/01/2022 14:41:57 2394638 Link 2 |
" He must be made accountable for his grave mistakes that caused Mountbellew-Moylough to lose such an important game. Is he going to be suspended from refereeing for 12 or 18 months?" Mountbellew got pretty much every call going against Ballinamore but none of the Ballinamore players went running over pushing him him after the game.
