Be doing well to get that number of managers/coaches out there.

All teams who have massively improved as well in the hurling. Hard attract a decent manager for a lot of teams when football gets in the way so often. From what I've heard from a few of our lads who have coached over the border it's a near on impossible task to get any momentum for hurling

Rumour has it that Glenealy are set to appoint shortly. Don't know who but someone with an impressive cv. This will be interesting.

Off topic. Anyone in the know, Will there be a new county jersey this year? Released before Christmas as Young man here looking for one for Christmas but has the one we have had for last two three years. If not I guess I'm going with a new design from another county or training top. Surely county board would be looking at for revenue etc. StrandedinWW (Wicklow) - Posts: 40 - 29/11/2024 14:27:08 2581697 Link 0 |
I doubt it at this point. This is confirming the status quo for another 12 months, time. Much more important than trying to make money.

Looking more positive this year for a return to u18s for minor's at club level for 2025. The motion didn't go through at least years convention but hopefully this year the majority will see sense. Albundy19 (Wicklow) - Posts: 70 - 03/12/2024 15:41:04 2582213 Link 0 |
Has the u19 championship begun? wicklowsupport (Wicklow) - Posts: 2026 - 03/12/2024 16:40:34 2582219 Link 0 |
Yes, the only issue being these lads who anticipated that this would be their last year of underage football will now have to play another year, possibly causing disruption to a lot of the smaller clubs who had anticipated the arrival of new blood. In terms of bigger picture I do also agree it's the right call to go back to even age groups and reintroducing minor to u18. In relation to the u19 championship it started at the weekend, you would anticipate an Tochar to be favourites but they are in a strong group which only 1 team can make it out of and straight to the final.

There were some games on last Sunday. Tomnafinogue beat Blesso. AGB won and Roundwood beat Aughrim. Another round next Sunday.

Why would the county board prioritise hurling? It isn't that I have anything against hurling, in fact, I love the game more than gaelic football in recent years but there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Wicklow can become a force in hurling regardless of how much money was invested in the game. Bray have won 5 in a row or something like that. They are the dominate club in the county and they can't beat an intermediate team despite the fact that they won the Leinster title a few years ago - they're regressing based upon their recent results. If they were progressing they'd be playing in the senior club championship. Contributors on this forum inform us that Avondale are an intermediate team and they lose by 28 points to a junior club side. Imagine if Tinahely lost to the intermediate champions of Dublin, Kildare or Meath? They'd be ridiculed. If the county ever wins anything, it will be in football not hurling. If I were on the county board, I'd be investing in football as it is more likely to yield some silverware. By all means invest in hurling if you have the money but we are so far behind in hurling that we'd need billions to catch up.

My understanding if passed that it won't come into effect until 2026. So those that played minor last year and are moving onto adult football will be doing so, so won't impact clubs to much.

I have to say, it's very dissapointing to see such pessimistic, punch-down, nonsense from Wicklow GAA people such as this. I pop on here every now and again and this sort of nasty, negative stuff really is for the gutter and I'd hope most well meaning GAA people on here would see it as such. It appears you prefer to just slate Wicklow hurling people rather than trying to constructively change some of the failings within our county and I can't understand what is you think you are achieving by doing that. Do you honestly want Wicklow GAA to abandon hurling and focus all resources towards football? The miniscule but proud hurling community in Wickow is not holding Wicklow football back from intercounty success and I'm baffled as to how you could possibly come to that conclusion. We should be trying to improve standards and participation in both codes throughout the county rather than arguing for complete priorotisation and domination of one over the other. A rising tide lifts all boats etc. "There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Wicklow can become a force in hurling regardless of how much money was invested in the game." There is no absolutely evidence to suggest Wicklow can become a force in either unfortunately - I would desperately love if there was. Based on national league positions last year: Wicklow rank 24th our of 35 in hurling and 22nd out of 32 in football. Wicklow needs to improve in both codes and slating one does absolutely nothing good for the other. "Bray have won 5 in a row or something like that. They are the dominate club in the county and they can't beat an intermediate team despite the fact that they won the Leinster title a few years ago - they're regressing based upon their recent results. If they were progressing they'd be playing in the senior club championship" There a multitude of ways to punch down at Wicklow hurling (if you're that way inclined) but choosing Bray as the stick to beat it with is bizarre. They won the Leinster intermediate in 2022, the first Wicklow club to do so. They defeated the Meath senior champs (Joe McDonagh county this year) in 2022&2024, Laois intermediate champions 2022&2023 and Dublin champions in 2022&2023. Thomastown, who bet bray last year final are the current Kilkenny senior hurling champions, are they just 'an intermediate team' as you've just lazily reduced them to? And Rathnure, who beat Bray by a few points a fortnight ago are historically Wexford's most successful club. They just beat the KK champions Lisdowney to win the Leinster intermediate final last weekend. If I were on the county board, I'd be investing in football as it is more likely to yield some silverware. By all means invest in hurling if you have the money but we are so far behind in hurling that we'd need billions to catch up." All I can say is, thank god you're not as your contribution is about as useful to Wicklow GAA as a chocolate teapot thinktank (Wicklow) - Posts: 1 - 04/12/2024 17:27:50 2582379 Link 0 |
Complete rubbish. Its not all about winning ya know. Said that often enough to you here. Luckly people who matter and make decisions in this county dont give a hoot about that type of idea.
