Isn't it great to see these pre season competitions back, especially to give young chaps the feel of the county jersey. The more the merrier.

No apologies needed Blackbog, you are up there with some of Carlow's great posters on the Hoganstand forum. Topics from posters here are always and only on gaelic games, hurling and football, albeit, parochial, local club and county etc. always worth reading.

Team picked for tomorrow night has a surprising 10 of the team who started last Saturday. I expected a more experimental team but a good few fellas in the subs who are newcomers and I thought might have been given a start tomorrow if just to prove themselves. Good win for the footballers. Hulton back to his best and choo choo played excellent too. Always taking the sensible option which hasn't always been the case. Leix in the semi I think? Carlovian83 (Carlow) - Posts: 14 - 07/01/2026 20:55:14 2650208 Link 0 |

Good performance by our footballers tonight and great to get the win. After a below par 1st half showing we dominated the second half and really saw out the last few minutes really well. Colm Hulton and Wexford's Sean Nolan were the two best players on the pitch but also a good collective team performance for Carlow in wet conditions. Carlow played the long game with getting hulton to play his best. Bring Curran in, take a year out and come back flying

Yes nice win tonight without being that impressive. After first 15 I thought it was game over when we trailed 5 pts to 1 but after that we out played and out scored them 1-12 to 0-8 for a deserved win. Wexford full forward like was very strong but I thought our backs were very good and came them in check as well as could be expected as they were dangerous. Semi final v Leix is in Rathvilly on Saturday. Great to see these games going around the county to different club grounds and also great to see tullow kids match at half time tonight and hopefully Rathvilly can organise similar for Saturday. Local kids seeing the county team playing in their own club ground is great and for them to play at half time is win win inspiring ye next generation hopefully. Carlow were terrible in the first half, but much improved in the second. Really missed Chris Nolan and James Doyle (who I am told will be out for a long while) up front. Overall, basically, Laois started with a strong team and Carlow finished with a strong team. And the scoring reflects that. Anyway, it's the Walsh Cup Shield. I wouldn't be too worried. The first league game is vital. CARPS (Carlow) - Posts: 1028 - 09/01/2026 13:34:20 2650397 Link 0 |

Chris is also missing for the first league game is he? ACarlowGael (Carlow) - Posts: 33 - 09/01/2026 13:46:12 2650400 Link 0 |

Chris is serving a 3 match suspension I understand and last night was the 2nd match. So because we lost last night and have no further official pre season game his 3rd game that he'll miss will be the 1st league game v Down. Not the worst league game to miss I'd say if he had to miss one. As well as James Doyle I understand Ciarán Whelan is out for all of the league as well. No sign of Jack McCullagh back yet does anyone know what the story is? Onion Breath (Carlow) - Posts: 1775 - 09/01/2026 13:57:47 2650402 Link 0 |

A poor start in Stradbally with a dominant Laois in the first half gettng plenty of scores. We battled hard but got no joy up front. The interval was used ton he last second by Carlow who came out flying and scored 2 goals from the same corner and missed a third. Got back to within a point of Laois but Marty missed a long range free to get us level and Laois tacked on a goal to basically.end it as a contest. Donagh Murphy played well when he came on. Quite a few players did not show up well but Beck got on a lot of ball and Kevim McXonald showed spme beautiful touches and swept up well at half back. Chris Nolan is an obvious absentee and will miss the Down game. A lot of hard work ahead for this group if James Doyle and Whelan are out for a while. Nevertheless, they worked hard and talent is not of much use if it is not backed by hsrd work. carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1894 - 09/01/2026 15:03:53 2650413 Link 0 |

I heard that he isn't playing this year. If that's true or not I'm not sure

Pity if true. He'd be some addition to the footballers if he is taking a break from hurling.

Agree that Hulton has added a different dimension by taking on his man at every oppprtunity. He did the same against Offaly and not afraid to shoot either for the 2 pointers ! Sean Murphy was decent coming firward and is strong on the ball. Hopefully.with more fitness in his legs he can attack more often than Wednesday night when he was in and out of the game. But when he is playing well, he adds a lot to the team. Midfield however.remains a problem as we still are not reaching parity in the possession stakes even off our own kick outs. This was clear all last year and against Offaly also. We can blame goalkepeers but the buck stops with yhe players. Getting the right combination is a real challenge for management for no 8 and 9. carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1894 - 09/01/2026 20:21:26 2650464 Link 0 |
