People talk about because Jim himself does. He said it last week in the build up he wants to go back to soccer again. "Before taking the job and where Donegal were and how I ended up taking it, I just finished my Pro-licence so I want to go back there someday too. And I do want to go back someday there in the future and nobody knows what the future holds and how you might feel further on in your life. And that will be a full focus then." Great to see Abbey V.S doing so well in the McLarnon cup, not often we have schools competing at that level so very impressive in the ease they've had getting to the final. Future is looking very bright for Four Masters NPadraigAbu (Donegal) - Posts: 83 - 29/01/2024 20:41:02 2523160 Link 0 |
Watching the game at the weekend I wonder is Jim going to play a total football style with players wearing 1 to 9 scoring 10+ scores per games and players 10 to 15 plus subs getting close to 50% of the turnovers. I don't think we have the all star forwards like Galway, Kerry and Dublin who can score 1.5 against the best defences and man markers in the later stages of the All Irelands so we are going to need 10+ scores from so called Defenders and big impacts from subs in the All Ireland series if we get that far. Thought's on piece in Examiner on LGFA meeting last week? I think McKinney raises good points. There's no perfect solution, and JP's donation was always going to cause tension between boards. It gets messy in a county like Donegal which is still developing the game with sticks and helmets, and is more acutely affected by depopulation than others. Amalgamations are common and they cause issues with domestic funding at the best of times. SurelyToGod (Donegal) - Posts: 434 - 30/01/2024 13:20:22 2523298 Link 0 |

I agree about Caolan McColgan, he is a big athletic wing back with serious pace who is very direct. We seem to have a lot of competition for those wing back or half back line positions though, Peadar Mogan, Ryan McHugh, Eoghan Ban Gallagher, Jack McKelvey, Odhran Doherty and Caolan McGonigle all vying for those positions Conor O'Donnell has been very unfortunate in recent years, last season he seemed to finally have turned a corner and was brilliant for Donegal in quite a few games, hopefully he has no further setbacks. It's a pity about McFadden-Ferry too. He suffered another bad knee injury and is away in Australia now as far as I know. You'd imagine his all action physical style would work well under McGuinness. Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 9515 - 30/01/2024 13:58:06 2523315 Link 0 |
Well following that logic he would end up picking the likes of McColgan and Eoghan Ban as corner backs, both very comfortable going forward and taking scores. Then maybe the likes of workhorses Jeaic McKelvey and odhran doherty in corner forward positions. Can't see that happening - more likely he'll persist with Brennan and McBrearty up top and transform them into hard working, hard tackling players which is already happening. Surely Gallen is in the all star category you're talking about? High_and_wide (Donegal) - Posts: 84 - 30/01/2024 19:26:41 2523381 Link 0 |
Looks like things are improving on the pitch and it appears that they're improving off the pitch also if the improvement in the content on Official Donegal Gaa social media is anything to go by. It has improved considerably recently, loads of good information, and better graphics , easier to follow. The Matchday squad announcements are out on time and look professional. greenfan (Donegal) - Posts: 573 - 30/01/2024 23:46:26 2523417 Link 0 |
Funding should maybe be divided up by Parish rather than by club by sounds of it. In the example you mentioned, Setanta (Hurling) & Red Hughs (Football) are from the same Parish (Donaghmore)/Village (Crossroads/Killygordon), but are two distinct clubs. They both shared a ground until the 1990's when there was a massive falling out. Commodore (Donegal) - Posts: 1193 - 31/01/2024 09:07:53 2523424 Link 0 |
Any word on the academy?

Surprisingly that could be just as agreeable as the current distribution, but again some clubs have more than one parish, and some parishes have more than one club. You could argue the current distribution helps smaller clubs, but plenty of small clubs manage four codes when bigger clubs don't. Plenty of work to do on the official website yet though. It still looks like it was built by a transition year student on work placement. But I'd agree that the social media content is improving.

They advertised recently inviting applications for the Head of Academy. I assume once that position is filled the academy will start to get up and running again

If Karl is out of the equation, surely Michael is the most eminently qualified candidate for the job. Now that would be another huge boost to the county.

I see that the clubs voted to not allow St Eunans or Naomh Conaill to play in the Junior A championship. I have to say I disagree with the decision as playing in Junior A allowed their reserve players to play proper competitive games instead of one sided hammerings or concessions in the Senior B. I hope the same goes for a couple of clubs senior teams entering the Junior B (Reserve) competition in recent years.

You're still spoofing away. You had a good week on the predictions competition. Maybe you'd want to go to a few games and get off the couch. It might help. LOL peiledoir20 (Donegal) - Posts: 1006 - 01/02/2024 13:07:52 2523662 Link 1 |
