Well done to your minors yesterday, great exhibition of young lads giving their all and not making excuses about population, resources etc. Sunday must have been disappointing for you but I think we would all trade a provincial title at any level for a Tinpot Cup win, that will be forgotten about in 2 weeks when Kildare hammer us and we are praying to draw NY or London in the preliminary QF. gaelsboy (Leitrim) - Posts: 588 - 21/05/2024 11:22:11 2546100 Link 0 |
There are 13 teams in Minor (U18) league competition in Longford at the moment, which is probably what TG4 meant. There is a dedicated U16 grade. Overall in Longford there are 17 underage units (4 are made up of more than 1 club). The quantity of teams in various underage competitions in Longford is: U12: 18 Teams (2 from Colmcille, hence 17 + 1 extra) U14: 17 Teams U16: 16 Teams U18: 13 Teams The numbers reduce slightly when Championship comes around as some teams join up for Championship. For Minor for example, last years Minor 'A' Championship in Longford had 6 teams (4 of which were made up of more than 1 club), while the Minor 'B' Championship had 5 teams (3 of which were made up of more than 1 club). So the comparison with Dublin is still stark and valid, but some of the TG4 detail was not quite right. LongfordgaaAbú (Longford) - Posts: 583 - 21/05/2024 12:01:25 2546115 Link 0 |
What a win last night for our minor team. A great group of lads and a management team that really seem to care of the players. I never realised Colmcille had 2 teams in at under 12 until you mentioned it! And fair play to them, both teams are doing well in the league. Having watched the game last night one could one admire the fight and splendid football Longford brought to the Dubs. Some fantastic players you have and what leadership shown by the captain to kick the equalising score. peiledoir20 (Donegal) - Posts: 1074 - 21/05/2024 14:56:42 2546175 Link 2 |
Came here to wish the Longford hurlers the best of luck in Croke Park... But now I'm interested in who Longford have got in and what opinion is of this within Longford?? MrPBoylan (Monaghan) - Posts: 216 - 21/05/2024 15:37:26 2546186 Link 0 |

Can anyone explain why county players were unavailable for their clubs yesterday evening and I'm going to presume this evening too. Longford are practically out and don't play until the bank holiday weekend again. Completely undermining the league at this stage and leading to some strange results. Some of the bigger clubs are going to end up in relegation trouble. Ridiculous system IMO where teams that provide the most county players are being punished. maximus02 (Longford) - Posts: 211 - 22/05/2024 09:19:39 2546297 Link 0 |
CB bowing down to the great Paddy Christie.....makes me a little worried that he will be kept on as manager next year if this is true.

Our Dear Leader graciously allowed county players play with the clubs less than two weeks before a match of actual importance, the Leinster championship game. No logic in this with the Tailteann Cup gone barring a mathematical miracle. Players not getting a game with the county prevented from playing with their clubs. The board should not be allowing this happen

Christie should be gone at end of year you swear we were kerry or Dublin why is he holding back players even kerry and i think mayo allow their subs or fringe players play County league Gaaforlife2023 (Longford) - Posts: 543 - 22/05/2024 16:41:02 2546447 Link 0 |
Dublin let their subs play the same weekend of a game. The Dublin sub keeper got injured playing for his club in a league game the day before the Leinster final.

You'd have to fancy Granard to push on now and win their first ACFL Division 1 title in 31 years. If Rathcline beat Clonguish and Carrickedmond beat Killoe in the next round, we could have a situation where the top 4 heading into the Leader Cup contains only 1 county finalists from the last 20 years (Abbeylara). And this is exactly why I said a few weeks back not to be paying too much heed into the league this season the way it is ran. This is also the reason why there was a change made on how relegation was going to be sorted. Frank74 (Longford) - Posts: 200 - 28/05/2024 11:17:45 2547869 Link 0 |
They are changing relegation now! a After the joke of the way D1 was run for the last few years with an actual division split into 2 arbitrary and completely lopsided groups where teams get relegated without playing half the teams in the actual division. Such nonsense, with it now making a mockery of division 2 where one team who probably weren't close to the worst team in 'div 1' last year now running through div 2 like water through a sieve. For Colmcille to beat the only other unbeaten team in the league by 30 pints during the week and without 4 county players is just a farce! The bottom 4 teams play off to see who gets relegated. 7 v 10 and 8 v 9. Two losers into the final with the loser of that been relegated. You could go through the whole league losing all 9 games and could still stay up!! Frank74 (Longford) - Posts: 200 - 28/05/2024 13:53:22 2547911 Link 0 |
Oh Lord, that's actually the way it should have been for the past few years when the division was split. Bottom 2 in each group play off. Do they actually understand what a league is?

Division 2 is top team goes up only. Spinx (Longford) - Posts: 1346 - 29/05/2024 12:21:34 2548119 Link 0 |
How do Killoe struggle to do back to back? You need to double check your stats. Since their run from 2012 they have only failed to do back to back once, and have since done it twice!! They have contributed to half the county team during the course of this year where Clonguish have not had a single player play. Our underage is very strong no doubt about that but the key man in getting so close last year was David Barden who I don't think we will be seeing in this year's championship!

If the team that ends up top of the table at the end wins the Skelly Cup, then the team that ends up bottom should be relegated. At worst, the bottom 2 play off to decide who is relegated, but not the bottom 4 - that makes no sense at all and makes a mockery out of relegation.

1961 - Knocked out in 1st game 1989 - Knocked out in 1st game 1994 - Knocked out in 1st game (replay) 1996 - Knocked out in 1st game 2013 - Knocked out in Quarter Final Some of us have been around longer than you. We always struggle to come back the year after a win. In 2015 we were a much stronger outfit than we are now (and a step above all other clubs at the time) and still Abbey pushed us all the way and got man of the match out of it. Made it across the line in 2020 only after Slashers had 7 wides in the second half. I expect same struggle this time but with a weaker team than prior years.
