There is much to admire about this Roscommon U20 team. Yes they were beaten by 10 points by Tyrone but Roscommon were game and spirited to the end. We missed a couple of chances after scoring the two goals which was a pity. Tyrone look an excellent team ( even though they did have a couple of close shaves in Ulster) and I think they'll beat Kerry in the final. Well done to Noel Dunning and his management team and to the players on a campaign they can be proud of. It can only be good for Roscommon football going forward. We have now won 6 Connacht U21/20 titles in the last 15 years. We had only won 2 Connacht titles at this grade in the previous 30 years.Shane McGinley has been the star player for Roscommon and he'll certainly be on the U20 team of the year when it's picked. There are also a number of other players from yesterday that I hope and expect will play senior football for Roscommon. endgame (Roscommon) - Posts: 2308 - 12/05/2024 08:45:25 2544187 Link 0 |
Hard luck. Ye were only a point down when I tuned in. Tyrone kind of ran away with it in the end but that can happen especially at underage level. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11429 - 12/05/2024 09:12:58 2544192 Link 0 |
Superb effort to get back into the game, that u20 team has a serious attitude. Just not able to take their points when it was needed. No shame in losing to a great Tyrone team. MachaireConnacht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1000 - 12/05/2024 15:33:23 2544286 Link 0 |
Would we have a decent u20 team again next year? moros (Roscommon) - Posts: 1110 - 12/05/2024 19:09:01 2544342 Link 0 |
Will be struggle to reach the Connacht final next year is my hones take. 2026 team/panel will likely be stronger.

That was a Tyrone team that left All Ireland title behind them in 2021 at minor level so would be driven by that hurt. They breezed through Ulster and Cork in the All Ireland semi final three years ago. This year's U20 Ulster championship made them battle hardened and used a get out of jail card against Derry. Derry I'd expect to be stand out team at U20 level next year. As for Roscommon U20s you get the feeling their target was simply to reach the knock out stages of Connacht and exceeded expectations by then winning Connacht. Best hope against Tyrone was conceding no goal and they conceded three bad ones. The best players from that Roscommon team should be put on strength and conditioning programmes for the next year now and then give them game time with the county seniors in 2026. A couple/few of those players such as Shane McGinley and Senan Lambe might well be called into this year's panel. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 646 - 13/05/2024 12:43:56 2544486 Link 0 |
Disappointing outcome on Saturday evening. Great start but well beaten in every area of the pitch. 10 pts probably flattered us as at at half time it looked like it was going to be a trouncing. The couple of goals brought us back into it for a short period but Tyrone just upped a gear and ran out convincing winners pulling up 10 minutes before end. Looking at Roscommon and listening to the build up it appeared Ross were happy with their lot and just played the game. SmokieRoss (Roscommon) - Posts: 279 - 13/05/2024 13:57:04 2544515 Link 0 |
Out of interest did you post on here when Roscommon won the Connacht title last weekend or waited for them to lose to Tyrone and then post?

The answer to that is fairly obvious. Each to their own and all that SmokieRoss posting style/gimmick on here tends to down play or belittle whatever positive results Roscommon teams get. That was especially seen last year when we finish 3rd in Div 1, beat Mayo in the championship in MacHale Park and drew with Dublin in Croke Park. For the record it was no "weak" Connacht U20 championship regardless what happens in the Kerry v Tyrone final. Galway had players in their side with All Ireland medals and Mayo,Sligo with a lot of players who played in All Ireland final. Our group had a lot of minors from 2021 whom with a better schedule we likely would have won that Connacht title and I believe we would have given a decent account of ourselves against Meath three years ago had we got the opportunity to play them The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 3926 - 13/05/2024 18:17:29 2544575 Link 5 |
After seeing the Leinster final, what are the thoughts on our game against Dublin. Dublin will probably think we will try something similar to Louth. One thing for sure, the lethargic start to games need to end as you don't want to be chasing a big deficit against the Dubs with only 15 mins of the match gone. We had a good shot success rate last year as well and took some lovely scores. Something we have regressed on this year but hope we can start to see an improvement on that. Any word on Harney and Davy Murray? MachaireConnacht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1000 - 14/05/2024 11:01:43 2544650 Link 0 |
At least we have the conveyor belt up and running pretty well again so far this decade. We'll be losing most or all of the minor/u21s 2011 to 2016 next 2 years and need to have decent talent coming through to avoid Div 3 and TC. The free highly recommended App: Score Beo has most of the football games down for Saturday 25th May with the hurling on 26th. While all dates and times have yet to be confirmed, the Dublin v Roscommon game is provisionally scheduled for 5.00pm on Saturday 25th in Croke Park. A donegal poster was inquiring about the Donegal v Tyrone game. It is provisionally set for 6.00pm on Saturday 25th in MacCumhaill Park, Ballymoney. All matche times TBC. letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 646 - 14/05/2024 11:26:11 2544668 Link 2 |

Ya I agree but it takes more than just having the players. Just look at Kildare.

Better place to start from than not having them !

Kildare have been winning All Irelands at underage but for whatever are struggling develop those players to become established seniors can say the opposite of Roscommon and I'll be surprised if handful of this years Roscommon U20s don't go on to be established seniors

Definitely.. I'm just saying we need to keep pushing forward and not rest on what we are doing. Very easy take your eye off the ball and fall behind. Like you said Kildare have been winning underage all Irelands but that hasn't made any difference because everything around them is a mess.

So round one match against Dublin all set for Saturday 25th of May at 5pm. Common sense used to have the U20 Hurling B final between Down and Roscommon on before it. Hopefully the round 2 game v Mayo will be set for a Sunday giving us at least 8 day turnaround to that match. The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 3926 - 14/05/2024 15:50:40 2544750 Link 0 |
