Replying To MachaireConnacht:  "Not saying for a moment we would have beaten Monaghan never mind Armagh but that Kildare game is even more painful now when you see what Monaghan have done. A team in transition, new manager and into an AI semi. Fine margins when you are at this level."
Probably doesn't make an ounce of odds though. Monaghan have zero chance of beating Kerry Dublin Mayo, and they won't be any better a team next year either off the back of making a semi imo . Armagh was a fortuitous qfinal draw for them, and I wouldn't read any more than that into it. Armagh had the chances to win that game in 70mins and 90mins, but they blew it by missing too many straightforward scoring chances.

Bitter bitter bitter. Sort out your own shop and don't mind what other counties are doing

You are probably right but don't underestimate the excitement and momentum that an AISF would give Gaelic football in a county like Roscommon/Monaghan/Armagh etc . It would be huge and would sustain a decade of underage teams who love strong local tangible role models.

Replying To The_analyser:  "They haven't started their transition yet, same warriors around and the problem for Monaghan is when the likes of Conor McCarthy,Beggan,McManus Hughes etc departs, serious boots to fill. They could easily have been sitting at home like us today but managed to get over the line by 1 point with the last attack of the game against Kildare yet they are into the last 4 now.

Tough for us to lose two weekends in a row by 1 point in added time (same happened last year v Clare) but i can't even imagine the heartbreak for Armagh with now three penalty shootout defeats in the last 12 months and I think the penalty kick was created by Armagh man?"
Analyser. You mention there Roscommon losing three important games by a point, That's not down to bad luck. When a tight game is there to be won, this Roscommon team loses it rather than wins it. For all the talk over the Summer of how defensive Roscommon were playing, Cork in injury time cut through the Roscommon defence with total ease to get the winning point. The great Dublin team won four of their All Ireland finals by a single point. Winning teams find a way to get over the line. That's what has worried me most about Roscommon under Burke. When the knockout game was there to be won, same old Roscommon. Beaten by a point same as against Clare last year.Monaghan won't win the All Ireland but they'll be dogged and determined opponents in the semi final.
When you look at Kerry today, you realise how far off Roscommon are and it is disappointing.

I agree that Monaghan are not serious All Ireland contenders but full credit to them for getting to a semi final. We haven't been there for over 30 years. On the match itself, Monaghan had far more wides than Armagh so if any team should have won it in regulation time or extra time, it was Monaghan. Armagh are going nowhere with McGeeney in charge. He's had chance after chance with what is a talented group of players but it always ends in tears. Vinny Corey is getting the very best out of this Monaghan team which is as much as can be asked of a Manager.

As the saying goes, if your not in you can't win. for the population they have they have been very consistent throughout the years. I am sure county's with far larger populations would like to be in their position.

Not at all, just telling it like it is. Galway were going nowhere this year. I'm delighted for Monaghan, if you're happier with a condescending assessment.

Disappointing ?
What age are you?
It's 44 years since we weren't far off AI Champions.
We were poor for a lot of the 80s, from 92 to 2001, from 2005 to 2015.
The other years we were middling to decent.

Modernity has industrialised the game so much that the big prize is now out of reach of all but two or three teams.

They have a better chance than us and Galway.
Fair dues to them they stay competitive no matter the turnover of players.
There doing something right.

We were poor for a lot of years getting hammered by Mayo or Galway. We were never poor when we beat Mayo in Castlebar which we've done twice in the last five years( before that was 1986) or drawing with Dublin in Croke park( even our great team of the late 70s couldn't do that). It's hugely disappointing to get results like we got in Castlebar and Croker this championship and still end up crashing out at last 12 stage to a second division team. Shouldn't have happened and we should at least have been running out in Croke park this weekend.
Incidentally a lot of Roscommon's barren periods which you reference arose from nothing coming through from underage. We won only one Connacht U21 title in the nearly 30 years between 1982 and 2011 which was a shocking record. We've now contested three U21/20 All Ireland finals in the last 11 years and players have come through from that and will continue to do so from the 2021 team.

Congratulations to Aoife O' Rourke (sister of World Champion Lisa) on winning the women's gold medal (75kg) at the European Championships today and also qualifying for the Olympic Games, where she will be a medal prospect. Great dominant performance clearly winning the fight 5-0. Fantastic boxer along with her sister Lisa. Some great news for Rossies to cheer us up this weekend.

Endgame. We don't always agree on things but you should really give it a break for a while as you will have us all depressed. You a very pessimistic poster who tends to see the jar half empty nearly all of the time.
Generally it has been a good year for the Rossies and progress has been made this year. Mayo were very unlucky to lose a couple of those All Irelands against Dublin, and Monaghan had a little luck on their side yesterday. Anyone that watches any sport on a regular basis understands that "luck" happens. It is coming back from those disappointments that tells the men from the boys, and the Mayo players certainly deserve immense credit for that over the years. They did not win an All Ireland, but they have got my respect. (Don't know how they will get on today yet!)
Hopefully Roscommon will continue to make progress next year with Davy Burke. I am optimistic.

I have to say I slightly disagree. Roscommon men should be very proud of where they're at when you look at the numbers and tangible advantages that the likes of Cork, Galway, Westmeath, Meath, Armagh, Kildare have over yourselves and ourselves.

Monaghan and Roscommon don't have any big big towns and aren't commuter counties close to Dublin - yet they're in mixing it with the big boys with what they have. In Division 1 and absolutely deserved of their place there.

A few more years with the same hard work and momentum in the county, a few more players coming through and a rub of the green with fixtures and there's no reason Roscommon can't be in an All Ireland. On the big day anything can happen.

Hats off to yourselves and hopefully yous can go a step or two further next year

Replying To endgame:  "I wasn't talking about Roscommon who weren't good enough and are out of the championship having lost to two lower League division teams Kildare and Cork and can have no complaints. I was talking about the performances of one player Enda Smith not in the League but in six championship games including against serious teams still left like Dublin and Mayo and in fairness he has been absolutely outstanding and man of the match or close to it in all games. He won't win an All star but he surely at least deserves to be nominated. There should be some recognition for an outstanding player even if he's on a team who aren't good enough to reach the business end of the championship."
If he was playing in TC he would get a nomination as all counties almost gets one.
This is the GPA All Stars in which you must perform on big stage to get a nomination. Roscommon sadly exited the competition before business end of season.

Cork ran out of steam today still only lost by 4 points. Dublin hammer Mayo in a match that was over 5 mins into the 2nd half.

Us drawing with Dublin and holding them to 1-11 in Croke Park to losing to Cork,Kildare by 1 and conceding 1-14,1-16 only one word for that. Inconsistent! and so frustrating that we are that inconsistent. On to next year with plenty of room for improvement.

Dublin were not really up for it in group stage. Main aim was to top group which they achieved. Responded to first challenge they faced this year today.
