Age wise Kilroy, Niall Daly and Ciaráin Murtagh will be the over 30s next tear. Depends if anyone is going abroad for a year or if anyone just can't give the commitment any more. But there haven't been any public announcements that I've heard anyway. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2055 - 12/10/2022 13:07:32 2443732 Link 0 |
Better candidate than All Ireland winning managers Davy Burke and Kevin O'Brien? I have many friends and work colleagues from Westmeath that didn't rate him that highly at all. Here is a run down on his time with Westmeath. Westmeath played in Div 1 in 2014 he took them over in a Div 2 with high hopes of returning to Div 1 the following year and they dropped to Div 4 under his watch and he left them in Div 3. Pat Flanagan took on Westmeath team relegated to Div 3 and he left them in Div 1. To reach 2015 Leinster final they beat Louth,Wexford two Div 3 team relegated to Div 4 and Meath a Div 2 team, they were knocked out of the championship by Fermanagh a Div 3 team in the next game. To reach the 2016 Leinster final they beat beat Offaly and Kildare narrowly and both were in Div 3 teams that year. Mayo ended their year in the next match while playing through the motions 2017 championship needed a replay to beat Div 3 Offaly. Then took on Dublin and chose not to play as defensive as previous two encounters against them, the end result was a 31 point hammering the highest winning margin Dublin got under Jim Gavin. Their year was ended by Div 3 Armagh side in the next match. Yes Roscommon are not a top team of which there is about 5 of however your team can do a whole lot better than appointing a journey man manager which will likely leave your team in a worst place than where he took them on Yondu (UK) - Posts: 845 - 12/10/2022 13:42:20 2443739 Link 2 |
as a westmeath man i would much prefer pat flanagan as a manager to tom cribben . he managed my club tyrrellspass to 2 county titles in a row and to a leinster club final and brought the county up 2 divisions no contest

No players have made their minds up yet. Every year we have players opting out due to work or travel so its not bold statement to suggest otherwise. As for us not a top team and can't expect to get a top manager well Louth said hello! The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 3938 - 12/10/2022 14:46:29 2443754 Link 1 |
Pat Flanagan has a very good cv but some people in Rowcommon think he isn't good enough for us. Same people are slating Tom Cribbin for beating Meath amd Kildare yet we ha e got to a number of connacht finals recently beating only New York, Sligo, London or Leitrim all due respect to them. Some roscommon supporters need to get a dose of reality. We are not seen as a top county across the country amd the players we have are seen as all too similar small and light. The likes of the top 10 mangers are not interested in managing us for the obvious reasons. The lack of a permanent training base is a serious issue and it's going on since the dark ages. No amount of backroom team will cover that up. Ultan Harney is rumoured to be going travelling for 12-18 months. Brian Stack is also rumoured to be going. Niall Kilroy who has had a lot of injuries this year and was rumoured to be joining a Dublin club earlier in the year may find it hard to keep committing even though he owes the jersey nothing Tom Cribben has not withdrawn but has asked the county board for some thinking time after his very young team Clane lost the Kildare final on Sunday. I'd imagine the Kildar Eling with Paul Early is the connection also. SmokieRoss (Roscommon) - Posts: 279 - 12/10/2022 15:09:16 2443760 Link 1 |
I'm not from Roscommon nor am slating Tom Cribbin. I have given you a run down on what he did with Westmeath which is factual information and which doesn't suggest he'll be a very good appointment for Roscommon as you posted yesterday. Roscommons last Connacht title was won beating two Div 1 teams away that's unlikely to be repeated with mediocre appointment. On another note how do you think its wise to posting rumours on here about players travelling? Yondu (UK) - Posts: 845 - 12/10/2022 18:27:58 2443785 Link 0 |
Worse than imagined and if I remember correctly he was poor with Laois and Offaly also. Roscommon better off going with someone local than him, at least will save some money on traveling expenses.

Kevin Walsh with the Cork set up for 23. Was he ever considered for Roscommon? FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2846 - 13/10/2022 13:57:19 2443843 Link 0 |
Apparently not. Decent appointment by Cork depending on the role he's given. When he took on Galway they were in a similar position to Cork. Lots of underage talented players but not knowing if they were coming or going at senior level.

At this stage the Roscommon job is becoming kind of an Agatha Christie 'who dunnit?' type of scenario. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2129 - 13/10/2022 16:07:47 2443866 Link 0 |
I'm not sure why you'd consider it a poisoned chalice job as there are far more positives to outweigh the negatives. We have a very talented bunch of players within the county, playing Div 1 football and plenty of underage talent to be brought through. I think it's all good and well giving out about a manager not in place yet but the simple answer is top quality managers are thin on the ground. Most of these so called too managers are already with other teams. As Monaghan and Donegal know well it's not that straight forward a task to appointment the right person. I think we have to have faith in the committee that was tasked with getting the new manager and believe that they will appoint the best qualified person that's out there. At the end of the day they are all Roscommon people too who only want the best for the county. I personally hope we go for somebody who's had some experience of Roscommon football whether that be a former player or coach within the county. If that is Pat Flanagan, Don Connellan or whoever else then so be it. I just don't like the idea of going for someone from outside the county who would be completely unfamiliar with the club scene in Roscommon. Hearing Tom Cribbens name mentioned would not instill confidence in me but then again I don't think the co board would be foolish enough to go with someone of his calibre. Only time will tell but whoever is lucky enough to take over the team will have a great squad to work with. I'd say outside of the top 6 teams or so most county managers would bite your hand off if they had the pick of players available to Ros. Let's hope we hear news of an appointment very soon and we can put all this speculation to bed. Ros Comáin Abu

It's reasonable to ask what our County Board are doing. Hyde park needs to be developed but no progress on that. We need a Centre of excellence but no progress on that and our search for a senior football Manager goes on and on. We're a proud gaa county and we deserve better than this.

I think it's fairly obvious Pat Flanagan would be appointed a month ago if the Roscommon County board thought he was the man to replace Anthtony Cunningham. Other options have clearly been explored in recent weeks and Pat Flanagan will only get the job if all other candidates have opted out. At the time Louth appointed Mickey Harte the case could be argued his top days were behind him. Was a great manager but had football over taken his style. One would suggest possibly given Tyrone won the all Ireland in the first uear under new management. However if I was a Ross player and supporter and I heard Mickey Harte was the new manager I'd be jumping out of my skin with anticipation. Another twist innthe never ending story is that a former all Ireland winning player from the 90s ableit with little managerial experience has been contacted about the position and is actively putting a management team together and will be interviewed over the weekend. Some interviews are still to be held. On the Kevin Walsh Cork link-up he was sounded out for Ross job but said he wouldn't be interested given his Galway connections. That happened early in the process. SmokieRoss (Roscommon) - Posts: 279 - 13/10/2022 20:00:42 2443904 Link 0 |

I heard Jason Sherlock. Can't see it happening, He said after he turned down the Monaghan job that he had "no burning desire" to get into management

It's ridiculous at this stage. People were joking on here during the summer that knowing our county board it would likely be November before an appointment is made and that's proving to be the case. Serious questions have to be asked after this in terms of where we are actually going. We are giving our team no chance of staying in division 1 with this carry on. When someone is appointed it will probably be another few weeks for them to finalise their backroom team so you're looking at December for a full management team in place and the FBD starting a month later. If they end up appointing Flanagan why didn't they do it in August? He must be way down the pecking order. As for the lack of training facilities, the state of Hyde park etc, I don't know what to say. It's been over 4 years since we were told we couldn't host Connacht finals and nothing done since. We're lucky we have a decent group of footballers at the moment who are probably papering over these cracks but that won't last forever and when we start regressing on the field all of these issues will be more prevalent.

He walked away from Monaghan job because he couldn't get a backroom team.

Rumours circulating this morning that a young manager who has tasted AI success is in the frame. Could this mean O'Brien the former manager of Corofin.
