Gort did very well to earn a draw last evening against turlough. Turlough will be very disappointed they didn't see out the win. Sean linnane was immense for turlough. Jackson88 (Galway) - Posts: 72 - 19/08/2023 19:22:50 2501361 Link 1 |
Loughrea look powerful. Nice win for Killimordaly over Clarenbridge. I didn't predict that.

Killimordaly could have more goals too but for some fine saves by the Bridge keeper.

Tampa sustained the level quite well in year2, only losing their playoff game on a late hail mary connection from the Rams, who went on to win it. You can talk about 'not the most skilled' all you like, but key players who can 'kill'/execute in the clutch are invaluable players, compared to lauded highly skilled players, who rarely manage to find 'A game' when it's needed most. That's where there's some serious similarity between Brady and the current Limerick crop. 'Choke' just seems to be something that doesn't impact their performance level in any way at big moments. This is a serious problem in landing a ko blow on Limerick, because to a man that squad does not do panic in the clutch. Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 4082 - 19/08/2023 21:13:06 2501378 Link 1 |
It's gonna be lonely around there so.

But Tampa didn't win and they have regressed since. You just made my point for me, skilled athletes playing to a system can sustain success, one will not succeed without the other. New England never had many players who got into the hall of fame, their stats not great but as a unit they won super bowls. Brady was a vital cog in a system that did this. Brady was a 5th round pick, was slow, did not throw the long pass, had very average receivers. He was perfect in NE that threw nickel low risk passes, protected the ball (possibly deflated), played ultra athletic tight ends as receivers, manage financials and had flexibility in 'next man up' and a 'do your job' mentality. Does this sound familiar to Limerick? This again did not grow organically, it was taught and as players came and left over 20 years they were able to plug and play and sustain success.. KK under Cody is the closest I have seen to NE in continued and sustained success, not Limerick they are a fantastic team best ever but if they can rebuild this team and continue to sustain success then I will tip my hat to them as the greatest sustained success. We will see if this is the case as players get older, injuries, drop outs from squad and retirements kick in and others adapt to their style of play. Funny we say GAA is an amateur game but all the comparisons are to professional standards and structures, does this give us a hint in which direction the GAA is heading? Good match between Ardrahan and Craughwell. DRAW. Iarla Tannian was great for Ardrahan while Tom Monaghan and Adrian Prendergast great for Craughwell. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2484 - 20/08/2023 16:54:51 2501447 Link 0 |

Great win for Castlegar. Nice to see Ger Farragher still playing great. Joseph and Kevin Cooney were great for Sarsfields. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2484 - 20/08/2023 18:40:25 2501466 Link 1 |
Sarsfields way off the pace today. John Cosgrove their best player at corner forward. They should recover and qualify anyway. A lot of their forwards need a dry sod with their pace. Kevin Cooney a brutal day on the frees, three bad misses. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 870 - 20/08/2023 18:40:55 2501468 Link 1 |
Hard to know where some of the teams are at following this weekend. Turloughmore, Clarinbridge and Sarsfields all disappointing results. Bridge looked a bit soft against Killimordaly, Turlough went back to their old failings against Gort. Thomas' and Loughrea cruising along so far and look like bankers for being in the last four anyway. Kilimordaly probably the surprise package of the group stage. Haven't seen many new lads put their hands up for county shirts apart from Jamie Ryan and Mark Kennedy. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 870 - 20/08/2023 18:58:25 2501472 Link 1 |
Gearoid loughnane the loughrea goalie looks like he could play at a higher level. Very very composed.

While I agree with you about Castlegar and Ger Farragher I had to laugh at how WIDE OPEN he seemed to be all during the match. Plus he can still nail them frees. lol.

Jamie Ryan was on the county panel this year (and briefly about 2 years ago) so he's not a "new lad" especially since he is now around 28 or 29. Mark Kennedy did well 2 weeks ago when he scored the 3 goals but he was fairly anonymous against Killimordaly. Talented player but just cant see him making it at county level.

Will make another attempt to reply to this post but will keep it short to see if it will get past the censors this time. No, GAA teams will never be able to become full time and probably not even part-time professional (in terms of being paid) unless the Arab nations extend sportswashing to GAA or Irish / US billionaires get involved to such an extent to make it one of their "pet projects". The system will continue as it is into the forseeable future with professional structures, professional levels of commitment by county players , but only recompense to individual players for travel expenses , image rights, and whatever commercial deals individual star players can get as brand ambassadors, endorsing of products, opening supermarkets etc. The revenue stream within the GAA will never be so huge to nurture the grassroots at every level of the game AND to sustain full-time or part-time professional teams. His pace may be gone but his radar sure still works. Also, and i say this respectfully, he has a good engine for a lad of his vintage. He never really seems to be taken off in any game and when it was in the melting pot late on yesterday he was still very prominent. It was a privilege to be in Gort on Saturday afternoon to witness yet another breathdaking display of point taking and all-round excellence from Conor Whelan. Stool Pigeon (Galway) - Posts: 906 - 21/08/2023 12:26:36 2501574 Link 2 |
