Don't think Shamrocks had any outsiders on their teams in '18, '12 or even 2000. Castledaly might have had one in 2008. Not sure what point the initial poster was trying to make.

I suppose that depends on what the definition of home grown is. Clubs in Westmeath seem to get players from outside what would be considered to be their catchment area.

Just trying to stir up the usual because Loman's have a couple of lads who joined them when they moved to the town and did not join his club

I know how it works but in the spirit of championship football as moate and caulry both beat shams (and caulry beat them easily) then they should of qualified before Shams. I can't justify that Shams finished 1st in that group - this points difference is not correct for this case. To me as all finished on 6 points then it should of being judged on a total of all the head to heads with these 3 teams. 3 matches then - Caulry on 3 Pts, Moate on 3 pts and Shams on 0 pts - sounds right. Some other sport does it this way (perhaps champions league) and it is the correct way.

Are you suggesting that some clubs are importing in finished players as a policy? I dont think this is happening in WH. Maybe in Dublin.

A not so subtle dig I'd imagine at St. Loman's. As far as I can make out from last Saturday's match vs Caulry, Loman's only had Peter Foy as a starter who hadn't come through their underage ranks. Even he might not have started had either Sean Flanagan or Fionn O' Hara been available. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1447 - 19/10/2021 20:27:05 2386356 Link 0 |
I don't think Heslin or Casey are Lomans since day one either Claretandblue - but fair play to Loman's for being proactive and actively recruiting throughout the years. Moate are another club that are great at their recruitment, was it 3 of their starting 15 this year that were players transferred in in recent years?

Ah come on. Heslin might have been with Shamrocks when he was 8 or 9 years old. No longer than that. He is very much a product of Lomans underage.

All 15 of Garrycastle's starters plus 3 of their 4 subs on Sunday were from their underage setup too as far as I can see. anon (None) - Posts: 352 - 20/10/2021 12:27:34 2386414 Link 1 |
When Athlone and the Downs were at the top, their teams were like the united nations. Icehouse (Westmeath) - Posts: 79 - 20/10/2021 13:44:41 2386433 Link 1 |

I suppose that begs the question how he ended up in their underage in the first place. If I'm not mistaken he is from near Loughnavalley, so does he have some other connection to Lomans? Not just him in fairness, loads of situations like that in the county. iarmhi_an_mhaith (Westmeath) - Posts: 268 - 20/10/2021 17:16:14 2386494 Link 0 |

A new face on the Garrycastle team Sunday, or maybe just new to me, no 17, Billy Kelly! Has he been around for a while?

Yeah, Bill was a very promising underage player with Garrycastle. He has been playing Junior mostly since he left the underage scene a few years ago, but he has had a number of games in Division1 league. He seems to be going well this year and fulfilling all his underage promise.

Bill Kelly is a young lad who has been playing junior the last few years before breaking into their senior team this year
