Derry V Donegal

Going to be close?
Gallagher will know Donegal inside out.
Murphy more than likely won't play.
Donegal defence looks open at times and Derry will target this with their strong running game.
Derry will compete with Donegal in the air unlike Down.

Thoughts?

Absolutely fascinating game coming up.

The pros for Derry...

Team are in great form.
Manager knows donegal players inside out, and has massive experience. (beat dl in letterkenny 2 years ago with fermanagh).
Team have beaten donegal at under age level x2, once when Bonner was managing. They won't fear us.

The cons for Derry.

Not sure about the jump up from division 3 to division 1 opposition.

Pros for Donegal.

Team are in great form.
Home in Ballybofey.
New players are stepping up.

Cons for donegal.

Injuries. Speaks for itself.
Defence. Goals.

All on the day.
May the best team win.

Expect us to win by 3 or 4 points, Murphy won't be fit but I think the lads showed the last day they can cope well without him too, if we were facing Tyrone without him I'd be a lot more worried.
I'd like to see a big improvement from our defence, any word on Mac Niallas?

The unknown here is how much Derry have really improved to date. They won Division 3 easily enough. Glass is an excellent player to have back in their ranks. They have some fine players around the pitch too in attack and defence and probably will bring a level of physicality we have to be ready for. McKaigue and Rodgers are two good defenders and look forward to seeing McGuigan in attack, lots of chat about him. Donegal won well against Down and while I expect this to be a lot tighter, in truth we should win if we are serious this year. I expect to see us put up a good score, hopefully improving at the back and avoiding injuries too.

This is a fixture that gives me the vibe of potential upset. Donegal obviously and rightly favourites but Derry are on the rise and have proven to be a tough team to beat. Rory knows their strengths and weaknesses too. Hopefully a close, hard fought game whoever wins it, the Championship badly needs a match like that!

It will be interesting to see what approach Derry will take. By all accounts Rory Gallagher has surprised many with his more attacking philosophy with Derry. They have been posting some very decent scores, albeit in Division 3. I just have a feeling we might see a return to a somewhat more defensive strategy against Donegal. If they try to go toe to toe, I think we have more attacking options and would prevail in a shootout if it came to it, even with our own more loose defensive displays of late.

If we can hold Murphy in reserve and do enough to get past our neighbours by 4 or 5 points I will be delighted. There will be no medals handed out for any hugely impressive displays at this stage of the summer. So a drama free win, with no further injuries or suspensions would do nicely. There is a quick turnaround to the semi final a week later after all.

Donegal 1-16 - 1-12 Derry

Ballybofey was always a intimidating stadium for away teams. But with 500 there on Sunday it's going to feel eerie. The Rory Gallagher factor will be talked about again, Gallagher divides opinion here in Donegal most of the fans don't like him but a lot of the players still have a good time for him. Him and bonner don't seem to have much Time for each other either. As for the game it's a real banana skin for Donegal.?Derry are on the way up and with Mc guigan on fire we need to be careful, can't see Murphy playing so it's important I feel to get Mac niallas back in. He's a quality player who can play in numerous positions.

Not looking to start a row here but I am genuinely baffled that a huge amount of posters on here for the past couple of seasons have said Donegal are the biggest threat to Dublin yet here we are talking down Donegal and talking up Derry and saying it is a tough game?

Nice to read a topic that hasn't gone completely off topic!!
Based on some of the results in championship it's not a hard to make a case that Derry could have got promoted from division 2 if they were in it. They have improved hugely since last year and hard to know their ceiling . They have been good at underage recently as well.

As someone said Donegal players speak well of Gallagher though from supporters point of view some of the matches were a very hard watch. 2016 Ulster final and quarter final defeat were very defensive displays. Shane Mcguigan in a recent interview highlighted that Gallagher has changed his views in how to play and has learned as he's gone along. I see them sticking to their philosophy on Sunday. In addition to glass who was super against offally and Mcguigan mckindless also is very good at chb.

Well it will be more of a test for us than playing Leitrim like ye are this weekend that's for sure, Ulster is always tough and I think it's getting tougher, Derry are on the rise and we have 4 div one teams competing for the Anglo Celt, nothing we like n more in Ulster than to take the neighbours down a peg or 2 if we can, so expect this to be a full blooded game, hopefully we comout on the right side of it with no injuries or suspensions, only a weeks gap to the semi final for whoever wins this.

Not looking to start a row? Ya sure, yeah? I think a 'huge amount of posters on here' have felt we were a threat certainly in recent seasons and have a lot of potential, but that doesn't make us the biggest threat to Dublin. Most sensible Donegal fans see a lot of ability but a need to translate that now to more than Ulster titles. Still, in knockout football it would be surely unwise to be dismissive of any team, especially one on the up? Mayo and Kerry have been the biggest threats to Dublin in recent years, don't think anyone would really argue that.

Did Derry not take Mayo to extra time in the 2017 championship??
Mustn't be the case, you obviously know your stuff.

We are talking about the change in tone here in relation to this game on paper. In 2021 yeah not 2017. Mayo were slaughtered for their performance that day. Same the day against Fermanagh.

It's gas how I make a valid point and you think I am having a cheap shot at Donegal. I absolutely am not. My point again is that if Donegal are the team to take down Dublin or beat Kerry or whoever then surely people should not be talking up Derry all of a sudden?

Donegal to win easy enough. Derry will fight and be in it for the first half.

How many players in the Derry team would start for Donegal? 3 probably, 4 at a push.

The difference between Div 3 and Div 1 is massive.

Derry have achieved their goals this year with promotion and will be a force in a few years.

Anyone thinks Gallagher won't be playing 15 men behind the goal is delusional. Donegal will also have 15 behind the ball. Counter attacking all round. Long periods of fist passing it back and forward.

I am making a genuine point. And in fairness there are a good few Donegal lads on here talking mince lately but I do believe on or two have multiple accounts.

Again my point is lots of people on here and in the media have said Donegal have a right good shot at Dublin. But suddenly Derry are a threat? Based on what? Division 3 results.

And also lads replying to me about my own county. I have already said Mayo are a fair bit off where they were in 2017 and on paper are in my eyes at best number 3, at best!

I know where you ré coming from Flaker but there are always banana skins like last year. I mean Cavan beat Donegal fair and square but Donegal would have done a better job v Dúin imo. Look at Mayo in 16 and 17 struggling through the championship and very lucky to get through the qualifiers and then come to Croke Park play brilliant football and very unlucky not to win the all ireland.
