No League Finals - A Joke

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Couldn't care less about the league finals. The same pundits complaining about them will be giving out about the late start to the club matches.

The reality is there should be no league finals any year, the top team wins the league, it's fairly simple stuff, bottom 2 get relegated, top 2 in division below that get promoted, it's simple stuff really unless you're a top GAA official it seems,
anyway for this year the way the leagues were divided into groups of 4, it's set up perfectly for semi finals/final, we had none of the usual pre season mickey mouse competitions, so this league was the chance to get ready for a knockout championship which will be a very short one for most teams, within a few few weeks most counties intercounty season will be over,
so for this year only they should have played out the leagues fully, there is plenty of time, what's another week or so added to the calendar?
I can't rem who won the leagues any year, it matters more this year as well with as expected a 2 tier All Ireland next year will be based on the league divisions, that's my opinion on the fiasco anyway for what it's worth.
Its great to have football back regardless and to have something to debate about, we could easily have been in the same state as last year, so thankful for that too.

It's not as if Carlow or Louth for that matter win so many trophies that they can afford to turn their noses up at the opportunity to win one. You mightn't care about a league final but you can be sure the players do. Once again the powers that be have shown nothing but contempt for the efforts of our footballers.

Players are too busy preparing for Championship to care about a meaningless final.

Different at Division 1 level.

Was impressed with Louth yesterday so it should be a good battle in 2 weeks time.

Could nt agree more. A final even more important for Carow or Louth but I'm afraid the top brass of the gaa don't have the same love for the lower tiers alas.

They really should have looked at not having the semi finals at all and traded that for the finals so we would have had:

Div 1 : Kerry v Dublin Final.

Div 2 : Kildare v Mayo Final.

Div 3 : Offaly v Derry Final.

Div 4 : Antrim v Louth Final.

The four finals and the six relegation play offs could have been played on the weekend June 12/13th and that would be the end of it.

The winner of Division 1 South against the runner up in Division 1 South with no place for Division 1 North. Yep I think the GAA could work with this proposal.

Not at all, you're looking at it as if there's two division 1's, there's not. It's common sense that the two finalists should be the two teams who have the highest points as my proposal illustrates.

It rewards the teams for performance, thought that would be common sense for everyone.

So you think a team that gets 4 points should get into the final ahead of a team which accumulates 5 ?

You should apply for a job with the GAA. :-).

I would have fancied our chances Mick, but we take her on the chin the year that was in it, wouldn't of been any harm for Kerry to have another crack at us in a big game in Croker after the disappointment if 19, expiernce if nothing else.

They did away with the league semi finals a few years ago Mick.

Seems weird they are having them this year now that I think of it, should just have the relegation play offs and a final between the top two and let the likes of ourselves and Tyrone put our feet up.

I wondered would Kerry and Donegal, take the weekend games on the chin and let the Dubs and Tyrone at it in a final, hardly I think.

I can see us playing a very weakened team against Dublin and I can't really see what's in it for Tyrone away in Kerry apart from getting a crack at Dublin in the league final,
funny enough I think Tyrone will likely win Ulster and be facing Kerry in the All Ireland semi final for a chance to play Dublin in the final.

I don't agree with you about "meaningless finals" Carlovia. Talk to the players. The finals mean plenty to the players especially if they are played in Croke Park. You're right about the game in two weeks. Dr. Cullen Park is a great venue. It should be a right good game.

Certainly I agree Tír Chonaill. The point of a league is that there is no final but the gaa like the money that comes out of a final.

That would hardly happen User but Tyrone are well capable of beating Kerry and of course Dublin will be favourites to beat Donegal so there might be a final yet but it does take the glamour out of the semis for Kerry and Donegal.

In these weird times it's not a big deal. The leagues were already compromised with them being split. Personally I think the team that finishes top should always win the league anyway. There shouldn't be semi finals and finals.
