A good and important win for Galway today. Score 26 points to 1.17. Solid performances all round. Cathal Mannion, Niland, Niall Burke and in defence Ger McInerney all played well. Limerick looked a bit unfit, some really big men eg Aaron Gillane trundling around a bit. Anyway onwards and upwards for the match against Tipp next week. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2519 - 16/05/2021 18:56:04 2342473 Link 2 |
Good win for Galway. Watched it on tv and listened to John Mullane on the radio afterwards raving about how good a game it was. Maybe its just me but i actually thought it was a poor enough game, very stop start and James Owens didnt help- blew for everything. Would concur with your assessment. Niland looks promising for you. I would say though Limerick may not be going full pelt in the league this year ...

Good win for Galway, far too many Limerick players were anonymous today. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 1908 - 16/05/2021 19:20:42 2342491 Link 1 |
Very nice win. I was skeptical about the win over Westmeath but today's win against a top notch team and Westmeaths performance at Waterford both look very good for Galway. Tipp will be a very stiff test and will give us more of an idea of where Galway stand. Galway Abu!

It got a bit intense at times today, Limerick gave away a lot of frees, 12 to 4 at one stage in first half, but Galway stood up to Limerick, and got the deserved win. They showed it is possible to beat Limerick.

Absolutely delighted with that result and Galway never looked like losing it!! katser (Galway) - Posts: 2193 - 16/05/2021 20:40:02 2342529 Link 1 |
Limerick did look very ordinary. Not a shade on last year's team! They have a bullseye on their back this year but I fully expect them to improve as the league progresses. Galway looked very sharp, and could be the team to beat this year.

Terrible whinging from Kiely in his post match interview. Most undignified...thought he was better than that. Basically accused Galway of diving and cheating and fooling the ref but in some verbal gymnastics added that they deserved to win!

It was indeed. Pot, kettle and black comes to mind with Kiely's comments after the match. I guess he didn't see Diarmuid Byrnes' simulation that got David Reidy sent off in 2018.

Galway were that little bit better but Limerick were not still in the game I always felt they cud reel off few points at will. I don't think Limericks panel is as good as they think but overall they have 21 or 22 players who can slot in but that's about it. Didn't think Kiely gave Galway enough credit with that statement of diving limerick are a bit rough in the tackle and got away with some of that malarkey last year to say the least. Not saying they are dirty but they played on the edge a fair bit physically. Galway gave as good as they good as well but were not diving as Kiely stated. Come championship Limerick will be a different animal. WildPundit (Tipperary) - Posts: 1709 - 16/05/2021 22:07:02 2342575 Link 1 |
His team's tactical fouling around opposing team half back line is a serious scourge on the game, i found his comments hilarious, if you foul alot who give away alot of frees, hardly rocket science...

Poolsturgeon anyone that knows kiely will know he doesn't complain..I never want to see players throwing themselves to ground but I think limerick need to roll and let out a shout, guaranteed to get a free..mannion could give away frees all day but got away with it..o neill and Casey booked for what mannion got away with..Anthony Daly said he hopes limerick aren't referred differently but he might be right..looking forward to seeing all of ye come on here when ye get what limerick have gotten in last 2 weeks..it's getting harder now for all the physical hurlers on all teams to put in any hits or tackles..just in case ye think I'm bitter,Galway weren't far a better team and deserved the win..all we want is fair bloody play.. John Kiely very outspoken in his post-match interview on what he saw as diving on the part of some Galway players - had he a point? football first (None) - Posts: 1259 - 16/05/2021 22:21:46 2342583 Link 1 |
To be fair to John Kiely the amount of play acting in the game has gone ridiculous. Every single team is guilty of it at some stage. The amount of players who go down holding onto their face guard when they get the slightest tap looking for frees is shameful. And every team is at it.

I'm delighted Kiely has come out with those comments regarding frees been given against his team that are unjustified because he is basically saying that Referees are doing their job correctly! katser (Galway) - Posts: 2193 - 16/05/2021 22:34:36 2342589 Link 0 |
Thats his point. Alot of the frees given weren't fouls last year...4 months ago. Theres guys throwing themselves down and the ref is buying it. Owens is notoriously easily fooled. And then he missed the hurley to the head on Hegarty. Kielys right...the game has changed almost overnight. Its rubbish to watch.

So are you denying that the galway players dived? I didn't see the game tbh, but if they did he's right to call it out. I always felt that Phillip Jordans dive in the 03 final that got Marsden sent off badly tainted tyrones win that day, and if galway players start at that stuff then I won't be defending them. Embarrassing stuff, embarrassing for the player, the county, and most importantly the game. Galway9801 (Galway) - Posts: 1706 - 16/05/2021 22:52:40 2342597 Link 3 |
Well Jackie Tyrell very forcibly agreed with him on Sunday Sport.
