Meath V Laois

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Can't wait, tickets hopefully ready to print out Thursday morning.
Can't see Meath slipping up at this junction. However Laois have to be respected. Meath are perhaps a year further on in their development, so for that I'll go for Meath by 2.

I think one of the most interesting aspects to this match will be how Meath handled the running of Graham Brody. This is something which Meath have not faced yet. The forwards will need to be aware of this.

Meath management will have a couple of interesting selections to make themselves. Notably do they play Padraic Harnan is James McEntee is fit again. Harnan deserves to play after his display against Carlow where he put in a good display albeit against a poorer team than Laois. If he does start then this will be is first proper taste of action since Breaking his leg last October/November time. If McEntee is fit, then who is the player to lose out. A decision will need to be made and it could be James McEntee who misses out on this occasion, (we havent seen the same player since he hurt his hamstring for UCC in the sigerson) Ultimately it will come down to a two in three decision of Harnan, McCoy, McEntee playing alongside Keogan in the Half back line

On the assumption that Shane McEntee is out injured, then no decision is needed a Midfield, Flanagan and Menton will be there. Flanagan will struggle on the fast Croke Park pitch i feel But unfortunately there does not seem to be any other options available to us at this time.

Into the forwards, The half forward line will be O Sullivan, McMahon and Brennan i feel.

Then there is the decision on Thomas O Reilly, who was harshly taken off just before half time. Does he hold is place in the team. Sean Tobin didnt offer a massive amount the last day. Newman is the only definite in the Full Forward line. Then Thomas O reilly, Sean Tobin, Barry Dardis. Personally would have James Conlon in the running for a starting position. Havent seen enough from him to have him in a position for a start.

"Laois have to be respected" is alarm bell stuff for a anyone that thinks like that. To me that translates to this game is in the bag and it's only a formality. Meath should win but it will be tight especially if complacency like you are showing RD is also in the dressing room.

Laois have been impressive over the last while and have some very good players. Should be a comfortable enough win for them. Laois by 5.

What about putting James McEntee or Harnan midfield with Menton? I rather either of those than Flanagan as he might well struggle in Croke Park. However, Flanagan definitely offers the option of longer kickouts.

Harnan would be my option in midfield tbh. Then the debate doesn't come up about James McEntee, Shane is still injured and even if we get to a Leinster final doubtful he will feature. I think Conlon definitely comes into the reckoning in forward line, he is a human miniature rocket who kicks points for fun. Also might be a game for biggie to start.

I agree. Laois have been flying for past few years now what with getting relegated to Div 3 and then getting promoted back up again. Meanwhile Meath have been woeful, what division are they even in again?

It was more of a general point/opinion about people/managers/players/coaches using the phrase respecting the opposition/underdog in the run up to the game. Mostly, it is used as "giving the opposition the respect they deserve" I see the phrase as a token gesture, kind of patronizing and really behind that phrae the favourite team fully expects to win and has written off the opposition.
Now this is not a dig at you RD or am I saying that you are in any way patronizing or writing off Laois. It's just my view on how that phrase Is used and interpreted. I see it as a tight game but expect Meath to win out in the end.

That certainly wasn't meant in that way. I expect the game to be close , actually one hell of a battle , I expect Laois to win the battle in midfield with ease. We have been playing with a makeshift midfield pairing all year ,(both are half backs) now even one of them is injured, we have a club midfield player on the team (from a junior club) but while he can field a ball excellently he is not very mobile and many fear he would be caught out in Croke park, I would say in forwards both teams would cancel each other out, I feel the winning of this game is in halfback line (and although I am not that familiar with the Laois halfback line) I think this is where Meath will win it james McEntee, Donal keoghan, and either of McCoy or harnan will be hard to stop with their run forwards, as I said I think Meath will win a tight match maybe by 2/3 points in end as their fitness and bench is a little ahead of where Laois are.

Can honestly say I think this one is 50/50, Laois are always a hard team to judge, never really know what to expect. But they're going well at the minute and will provide a stern challenge.

Be very interested to see how we get on, this is McEntee's 3rd year in charge but first championship game in Croker. This is ultimately where we want to be playing and winning, that's the goal and sunday we tell us a lot about where we are in that regard.

McEntee rightly said after Offaly game that Meath are simply not good enough to be slightly off, improved a bit against Carlow but are in no position to patronise or take any team lightly and I expect management to have hammered this home. This is a 50/50 game and Laois will be quite happy to be seen by some as the underdog. Expecting a good game with a few points in it either way.

I'm nor sure about Meath yet,if they're any good at all they'll win well but its not a bad Laois side.

Not sure many in Meath are expecting us to win well, a win will do us nicely, a good win would be a bonus.

This is McEntee's third season in charge and to be fair he's put us on a good path but he started from a very low place. More time is needed to see if we can improve any further, hopefully we can.

Think we'll find out allot about meath in this game, as you said realdub as good and all as laois are if meath are now a genuine division 1 team then we should be winning this by 5 plus, really looking forward to it.

That's it. It's already been a superb year for Meath, the best in a decade. So really what we want is to be put on a sound footing. We not looking for all ire , we looking to be placed in the top 8, then top 4, then and only then will we be able to challenge for national honors again. It's still very much a building process.

A win is a win. While it be nice to see a complete performance (probably haven't had one since cork , Clare games. ) but it's all about getting to the super 8s. Win this and we have 2 games or chances to get there. That's all that really counts. So yes I would dearly love a great performance, but I'd take falling over the line. So far this year all goals have been reached. Let's keep it going
