Amazing how little publicity this major cock up is getting. Only over shot the runway by twenty five million. How Meath or Louth or Kildare and many other boards trying to build or upgrade their own stadiums could do with such a figure. And the Cork County Board appear to think everything is Hunky Dory and that Father Christmas in the form of Croke Park will forward a juicy Christmas present. Heads would role if this was a business. I don't condone the overspend But every stadium in the World is overspent seemingly. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2614 - 18/12/2018 21:35:57 2154668 Link 0 |
Agreed, but at least stadia like those are worth it. The cost of PUC and it looks like it's from the 80s. Haven't full all covered seated stadia been built in England for example for far less? It's a joke how much has been spent on that and it doesn't even look half decent

The Pairc is a great addition to Cork city and the GAA. Every major city has a decent sports stadium. Cork has one now. Regarding English stadia, well Tottenham are having problems with delays and overspend. Arsenal took a long long time to sort out the Emirates. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2614 - 19/12/2018 10:46:02 2154694 Link 0 |
they are not the same though.if tottenham overspend on a stadium you can be sure it will end up in court,or with spurs footing the bill.not arriving to the gaa with cap in hand. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 19/12/2018 17:27:17 2154753 Link 2 |

Irish people are begrudgers and if this was a Rugby stadium there would be no debate. It would be- "lets get the finance sorted" As I said previously, The Aviva got 191 MILLION EUROS FROM THE IRISH TAXPAYER. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2614 - 19/12/2018 19:52:36 2154771 Link 0 |
and what?just because they got that, that means that 24m of an overspend is ok? are you in charge of the galway finances by any chance with that attitude? no overspend is ok.the aviva cost a fortune to build because of its constrained location, and the fact that it is used by national teams in 2 sports and a lot of other teams and events mean it is at least being used on a regular basis. not a stadium sitting empty most of the year. irish people are not begrudgers, but when tax payers money is involved yes it is fair enough to ask what happened.just like the childrens hospital. if anything, irish people are way too passive about these things, they should be asking why our money was wasted more easier. the old "ah sure its somebody elses money" is not good enough.because it is our money. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 19/12/2018 21:15:04 2154776 Link 3 |
Pairc Ui Chaoimh is a great asset to Cork and the GAA. It is built- the question now is how to make the most of it. Has Perfect10 and ideas as to how this can be done ??? galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2614 - 20/12/2018 11:03:50 2154800 Link 0 |
I've dealt with perfect10 in the past, he seems to have an anti cork agenda in most his comments

Let's see if Cork can pay for it now Serious money a year just to keep that place open while paying off substantial debt on top of it Serious funds required and hopefully for Cork GAA it's sustainable. As previously seen Limerick CB have called the Gaelic Grounds a "burden".. Mayo nearly went bankrupt over their own redevelopment only for GQ stepping in and saving them millions! .... and both these projects cost far less than PUC! Yet both have proved/proving to be completely unsustainable. All this while clubs in Cork are on the cusp of closing their doors for good... all this while attendances are dropping. But hey.. you have your big shiny empty thing to point at! jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20763 - 20/12/2018 15:13:37 2154828 Link 3 |
Nail on head. Big shiny empty thing to look at at everybody else's expense. I don't know whether it is the experience of going there last year but you couldn't make up that the GAA poured so much money into such a poorly located stadium. If they had done up Portlaoise or somewhere to that standard I'd say well it is on the M7 and half the country can probably be in it within 1 1/2 hours. Maybe Cork will be allowed to play all of their games, football and hurling, there from now on.

In the case of Mayo they built one stand, not a ground redevelopment but one stand that cost the bulk of €16 million, the other three sides of the ground are uncovered concrete lintels. And for €16 million they didn't even get a complete unrestricted view the new stage as it has supporting pillars, the designer/architect/quantity surveyor need a serious kick up the hole on that one. Limerick has potential and has a huge capacity (could be reduced by seating one of the terraces) but has been hamstrung as a concert and event arena by a lack of corporate and bar facilities, this should be explored as a big equipped venue in a city like Limerick could attract numerous concerts etc. I hear Limerick have a wish to redevelop the Mackey Stand into a smaller capacity stand with a higher emphasis on facilities and a corporate element, that would be good. In the case of venues that have capacities such as these they should be open to all sports and counties should have the right to generate as much revenue as they can from their county ground, thevdsts of having such restrictions are gone. New stadia developments need corporate and event facilities, Kildare are planning them in their new stand in Newbridge and Meath are planning retail units or office space in the redevelopment of Navan. County Grounds need to be multifunctional now and be more than just a pitch to play matches on, if done properly then a thriving business can develop.

Poor jimbo is upset that someone else Is getting GAA money . Don't worry jim ye'l still get yer 1.5 million a year of tax payer money as good old berti saw to that when he was minister for finance. KingdomBoy1 (Kerry) - Posts: 14092 - 20/12/2018 17:29:46 2154846 Link 2 |
Jimbo - Mayo are saving on interest rates but the full loan is being repaid and we are all paying for it...I.e levies on every club in the county. I know well the full extend of it because I'm involved in my local club...it's like a noose. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11585 - 20/12/2018 18:24:43 2154852 Link 3 |
I cannot comment on the buildings except to say a 60% over spend deserves a few sackings - but knowing this country it would probable be promotion. They could not even get the playing pitch correct even though the smallest clubs in the country can build a good pitch -it says it all. What is going on in the GAA from the top to the !!! .
