Not only are ye favs for Connacht but dark horses for Sam.."
Connacht league final which both took serious. It was a booster for the league which allowed Galway kick on and gain promotion with a game to spare. Roscommon off the back of that defeat was slower to get into their groove which included points dropped at home to Clare, Derry.

What's with the ye? My view is neutral and you well know Galway are favourites for this Connacht final. In terms of the race for Sam only three teams have shorter odds to win it than Galway. That highlights how highly the punters rates this current Galway team right now.

Replying To Mayonman:  "My heart says Shane & Comer tear Rossies apart and Conroy chips in with a few majestic points!

My head says both teams will have their periods of domination and one of us will be hanging on at the end while the other tries to get the equalising score.....like against Mayo!

I always go back to the last 2 All Irelands we won. Our toughest opponent both times was Rossies. 1998 we were lucky to escape with a draw on a terrible day in Tuam and won the replay after extra time. 2001 ye beat us and half of Galway thought we were out until we relaised we had the back door. We beat ye in the qualifiers.

The most disrespectful thing i've heard say after losing to the Rossies was we took them for granted. How could we with our record against ye. Anytime we lost it was because ye were better not because we took ye for granted.

Whichever team wins the Championship opens up. Dublin and Kerry are on the other side. and while any team we get in q/f or s/f will be good, they will be far from unbeatable and I would expect the Connacht Champions to have a good shot at getting to an All Ireland final."
Terrible referee decision lost us the final in Connacht in 98 . Ros were much the better team even with 14 men in Tuam in the 98 final.

Much better than our 98 team?! I don't think so. Was at them all. Ye were good though. Anyway, that's the past. Looking forward to the here and now with two very capable teams going toe to toe in the Connacht final. It's there for either of them. Hoping Galway can at least match the intensity that yer lads will no doubt bring. See ye in Salthill.

Huge opportunity for both teams with Dublin and Kerry on the other side of the draw.

Should be a great day in Salthill. Last time the traffic on all roads into Galway (never mind Salthill!) was crazy. Presume ye will bring a big crowd again.

In the1998 replay, the goalie fumble cost ye. Michael Donnellan punished.
I wonder would Ros have gone all the way? Not convinced.

We were 3,4 points the better team in that drawn game in Tuam 1998. Last two plays of the game as to why it finished level. Obvious free in to us ignored and straight down the field a dubious free in given to Galway to level it up. A get out of jail card used by Galway and still only fell over the line in the replay after extra via a goalkeeping error.

As for the here and now and intensity. Well one of my biggest concerns is how we switch on and off in regards to intensity. 1st half of the Sligo game we had little or none of it and a repeat of that 1st half against a favourites Galway in front of enthusiastic home crowd will be curtains

Not convinced either we'd have won the All Ireland in 1998 if we got past Galway. We haven't won a senior championship game in Croke park since 1980. Roscommon however should have beaten Galway the first day in Tuam. There have been some great games between Roscommon and Galway. We won back to back Connacht titles in 1961/1962 beating Galway by a single point in both Finals. The famous broken crossbar final in Castlebar and Roscommon reorganised and came from 5 points down to win. We did get to the All Ireland Final in 1962 losing by 6 points to Kerry. The easiest Kerry have ever beaten Roscommon in an All Ireland Final.

In the minor Connacht championship tonight. Sligo 9 points winners against Leitrim who we struggled with and scored impressive 4-18. Uphill task for our lads to keep themselves in the competition next Friday v Sligo in the Hyde.

The eye catching result of the night was in Tuam with Mayo beat Galway by 14 points and holding them to a mere 0-4. I think that highlights what a strong defensive showing can achieve. You simply gave good Galway forward too much time and space to cause damage.

Really surprised at the Mayo v Galway result. Galway looked brilliant against Roscommon. Minor results can be inconsistent but Roscommon do not have a good minor team this year.if we beat Sligo, we are into a semi final v Galway with the winners playing Mayo in the final. Roscommon have produced so many good underage teams over the last 15 years since the glory day in Ennis but this year's minors seem poor.

That was a brilliant Galway team with great footballers. A game is never won until the final whistle is blown, playing well for the majority is no indicator of the better team, the scoreboard tells the tale. Like in the Hyde in 2001 we were waiting for the ref to blow, naive and complacement, when Gerry Lohan stuck the ball in our net and put us on our arses, League Champions how do. What a finish! 'Safe home' ye said to us as we put the heads down and left bereft of the Nestor Cup. But deservedly beaten.

Yes that was a tough loss for Mayo. To lose by a point to a goal 5 minutes into injury time was I'm sure hard to take. That was Roscommon's last Connacht Final win at home. Our 3 Connacht titles since have all been won on the road. I think that Mayo went on in 2001 to lose to Westmeath in the qualifiers. Galway of course became All Ireland champions beating Meath in the 01 Final. A Connacht team hasn't won Sam since, a gap now of 21 years. So many near misses for your Green and Red.

In 2019 ye beat us after we won the league again. A mighty hardhitting game of football. We can come up with as many reasons/excuses as there are for losing finals but we weren't cutthroat enough on the big day. '96 was the nearest since '51. 2001 was a great year for Connacht Football. 2 teams in the League Final. I was in Tuam shouting for ye when ye put Galway in the backdoor and later shouting for Sligo beating Kildare and Galway beating Armagh and Derry on their way to Sam.

Yes and in 2001 Mayo beat Roscommon in the League semi final and then beat Galway in the League Final. 2001 was the first year of the back door in the football championship. Having beaten Galway in Tuam in the Connacht championship, Roscommon lost to them in Castlebar in the All Ireland quarter final. Hard to know when a Connacht team will next win the All Ireland. The province went 32 years (1966 to 1998) without winning the All Ireland. Hope it's not as long again but it's already 21 years and counting.

Mayo have shown the template to the winner of that game in Hyde Park next Friday on how to beat Galway. Biggest surprise is their free scoring forward line scoring just 0-4 3fs last night. That comes from not giving those forwards time and space.

What is poor has been lack of organisation in defence if improvement can be brought in the two weeks break we'll stand a chance of getting a rematch against Galway. If not Sligo will beat will beat us by a few points to spare.

A lot of good individual footballers on this years U17 team. it's a development grade and at the end of the day, it's about getting a handful to go on and play senior level. Remember the likes of Brian Stack, Richard Hughes, Cian McKeon weren't on successful county minor teams.

Ruairi Canavan is a special talent but Kildare were way too sloppy in the U20 Final. Tyrone far more clinical. Doubt the Connacht championship was up to much. Roscommon should have been winning that with a number of players having the experience of last year. That's 3 years for Liam Tully. Is his term up or have we another year to look forward to.

One of the best chances for Roscommon to reach an All Ireland final in a long time, the from line looks good with with been unbeaten in 3 games against Galway & Derry.

Bookies might be tipping Galway but have seen majority of neutrals rightly tipping Roscommon who have a great recent record in Salthill.

Certainly an opportunity to be grasped for the winner of this game but both Roscommon and Galway still have a lot to prove before any such talk. The winner of this will definitely have momentum whereas I feel it will be a big ask for the loser to make a quarter final if the likes of Mayo, Tyrone, Monaghan avoid each other and come through the first qualifying round with a bit of momentum behind them.

Colm Keys of the Indo tipping Galway and I would say most pundits will be doing the same in the next two weeks.

I know people in Galway have been critical of PJ but this is his first proper year because of covid. I would say it was trickier on new managers like him who had yet to do a full year with the player's. They were efficient in their league campaign and did exactly what they needed to do. They then showed shrewdness of tactics to tweak their game for Mayo and pulled off a great win. They will be well prepared and motivated for us. Our management team will also need to be shrewd with their gameplan and hopefully the players will be fit and hungry to implement.
