I disagree. I think the game last weekend has changed a lot of things. clare_sparrow (Galway) - Posts: 425 - 06/05/2022 13:34:40 2415256 Link 1 |
They have a good chance for sure but they aren't even in it yet.

Beat Laois and qualification is assured, that's the first priority. Stool Pigeon (Galway) - Posts: 822 - 07/05/2022 08:38:58 2415361 Link 1 |
Winning Leinster. End of. Straight to AISF and potentially Limerick on the other side. All Ireland Final in reach. Catch Limerick in the final like they caught us in 18'. Night in the Burlington and a week of pub parish hopping in the warm glow of summer evenings.

Sam If ye win the All Ireland ye will have caught nobody. Ye won it in '17 because ye were the best team in Ireland that year and if ye win this year it will be because ye were the best team in '22. Limerick won it in '18, having knocked out the dual champions out of both the League and Championship and also knocking each of the big three. They were the best team in Ireland in'18 all day long. Old You seem to be confusing a league system run over 20 or 30 games gathering points as you go with our wonderful system. Invariably the best team in such long league scenarios "rises to the top". No such system is run in our beloved GAA (although the round Robin has some elements to it.) But at a minimum you are required to win three "on the day knock out games" to be provincial and All Ireland Champions. Like all knockout games it's on the day. And so called lesser teams in the white heat of battle do prevail. Leitrim winning Connacht in 94, Sligo in 2007 Dublin beating Meath in 2002 Cork beating Kerry in 2020 Offaly beating Kilkenny I'm 1980 Antrim beating Offaly in 1989 Galway beating Cork in 1975 List goes on. Were the winners "better teams" No. But on the day they took their chance. Limerick were the best by far in Ireland in 2018? Were they the best team on the 2nd June 2018 when Limerick drew to Cork. Were they the best team by far on the 17th June 2018 when losing 11 points to Clare? Were Limerick the best team in Munster in 2018 when they didn't make a Munster Final? Beating a punch drunk Kilkenny by 2 points after their Leinster Final exploits. Beating Cork by 4 after extra time. Beating Galway by a point in an All Ireland final. Any Limerick fan that tells me they were "by far" the best team in 18' is rewriting history in my eyes. Ye got the breaks. Ye took them. Fair dues. Wouldn't make an All Ireland any less sweet after the wait Limerick had. No more than Galway in 17' where it took a JC wonder score to scrape over the line against Tipp. I'm not sure why Limerick take such offense to people's opinions of 18'. Limerick were All Ireland Champions and that's all that counts. The rest is just pub talk that keeps us warm in dimly lit pubs and warm turf backed fires in November. My wonderful, beautiful caring Mayo friends will forever tell me 1998 was the softest All Ireland Football title ever won. And so the circle goes. To end on this. Whether you'll admit it or not if a team beats Limerick this year including Galway it will be "on the hop". Best team. Best panel. Perfectly balanced age group. But alas. With championship hurling the chasing pack will forever dream. SamandLiamSoon (Galway) - Posts: 584 - 09/05/2022 19:56:00 2416067 Link 1 |
Just finished watching the leinster under 20 final how in the name of God did we manage to lose to kilkenny it has to be one of the worst games I have watched limerick will hammer them minor77 (Galway) - Posts: 222 - 09/05/2022 20:54:29 2416078 Link 0 |
Sam For a start nothing soft about '98 win. You beat a team that had taken on and dethroned the All Ireland Champions of the two previous years plus that of '99. I always think Galway Football teams always have some edge that your hurling teams do not have- but that is only my opinion. Otherwise I take on board what you say and there is a lot of merit in it. I would quibble in one regard with you. When the boys drew with Cork they done it after playing with fourteen men for 45 minutes of the game and in Corks own backyard. No mean achievement, as Cork went from 1923 to 1996 without been beaten in a championship match in 'De Park' Oldtourman (Limerick) - Posts: 4285 - 10/05/2022 11:17:47 2416179 Link 1 |
If you had have been at the match you'd allow for the awful conditions not conducive for good hurling. Last weeks semi v Kilkenny was an excellent game and a better gauge to judge them. I agree though that Limerick have been very impressive apart from their opening game v Clare and will rightly be favourites for the final

Leitrim were Connacht champs on merit in 1994 imo. Galway failed to beat that Leitim side in 3 attempts in 1993 & 1994. As for the Offaly 'shocker' in 1980, the better team lost you think? Offaly were all ireland champs in '81 & '85, and won half the Leinster titles played in the '80s, losing another infamously in '82 on the Matt Ruth 'wide ball'!! You'll have to cut out the turf fires as well Sam, before the sea comes in to quench it!! Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 3395 - 10/05/2022 11:53:21 2416195 Link 0 |
You'd have a challenge convincing anyone under 25 years of age that Galway Football team have 'some edge' that Galway hurling teams do not have.

You lost to Kilkenny because your panel were only able for 40 minutes of hurling. The last 20 minutes of normal time and most of extra time Kilkenny were alot better than you. Best watch that game again. Agreed the final wasn't a classic but it was played on a bog with lads slipping and sliding all over the place. At least like almost all the Leinster u20 games it was close and had an exciting finish. What more do you want?

Yes Pope, but I remember the great Galway team of the sixties, by far and away, the best team outside the big two in my lifetime. The fact that they beat Kerry three years in a row, would say it all. I remember also '63 when an awful bad refereeing decision led to a goal, which almost certainly deprived them of a four in a row. The Under 25 thing is interesting, as apart from Tyrone and to a lesser extent Donegal, Dublin and Kerry have been dominant since 2001 and Galway are still one of only five counties that have won more than one All Ireland in that period.

Now now Pope your Grace. We've gone over the rewriting of history. Offaly arrived in 1980 never having won a Leinster let alone an All Ireland. And were taking on the All Ireland Champions to boot! Some Kilkenny folk still talk of if it if you stay in a watering hole long enough into the wee hours and the pain in their heart as they retell the horror tale in a quietened whisper of an ambush of all ambushes does warm ones cockles when the turf runs low. Now in hindsight with what Offaly went on to achieve in the 80s (least we forget Kilkenny were All Ireland Champions in 82 & 83) probably not the biggest shock. But as some Kilkenny ex hurler said (only smart thing I ever heard outta them) as I was bopping my way home from Thurles listening to radio one sport one evening: hindsight is the foresight of a gobs***e. Leitrim I will concede was no shock. And to my Leitrim kin I apologise for sullying the good name of 94'. I took the easy way out and picked a minnow winning a provisional title to go for the shock and awe factor. As Popey says it was not a shock. The rest of Connacht were in a heavy Cromwell shadow and could muster sweet FA against the green and gold juggernaut. SamandLiamSoon (Galway) - Posts: 584 - 10/05/2022 21:16:08 2416391 Link 1 |
