100% agree. And given the lack of revenue returned, I cant see the co boards reasoning for keeping it going. Good to see the Ladies go down the right route with it, its just an awfull pity the men's teams wont do the same. And as you pointed out, for more reasons that just money. Quality is another issue & more importantly, where its actually produced. And of course supporting local. Jinxie (Meath) - Posts: 6347 - 18/10/2022 12:43:58 2444479 Link 2 |
A slice of good fortune for us with the Leinster championship draw for 2023. Avoiding Dublin and Kildare until a potential final. It can be difficult to get any way excited for Leinster with Dublin's dominance but hopefully we can put a couple of wins together in the championship and build a bit of confidence before we meet them. An additional incentive this year as provincial finalists are guaranteed their place in the All Ireland series. Of course we're in no position to expect it to be easy against Longford/Offaly. A lot of the players still have the scars from our last meeting with Longford. Westmeath and Louth are both going well and I'm sure will not be short of motivation against us. I'm really looking forward to next year's League and hoping we see a reinvigorated bunch of players with a fresh management team sure to spruce things up. men_of_49 (Meath) - Posts: 2003 - 19/10/2022 17:14:34 2444644 Link 1 |
It s a fact that some lads made for Croke Park on inter County Day are not as well suited to club matches of iffy pitches with iffy officials in charge. But the regional teams would help lads gain experience and some county lads were not the best available and just because they got favourable selection does not mean you can expect them to shine at club matches. If COR can bring in impartial trials and pick the best he will have a great advantage, And I think he will.

Indeed...impartial being key. All rourkey has to do is sort out goalkeeper/kick out, freetaker, and we'll be flying again. bert09 (Meath) - Posts: 1807 - 20/10/2022 11:29:21 2444725 Link 3 |
Here we go with usual nonsense of the picking off the county panel isn't fair and not impartial. Years and years this rubbish is spouted. What player or players who have not never gotten a chance on the county panel would come in and improve our starting 15 or even our matchday 20? Plenty could come in to make up the squad players from 24 to 30 alright and wouldn't make any difference to the quality of the squad. There is no player out there who wants to come in but hasn't been given the chance that would improve our starting 15. Not 1!!! They never seem to be able to mention names that aren't being picked. I do think the panel went a bit stale in the last year and there should have been a bit more turnover to keep things fresh. But it's not like there'll be 3 or 4 new lads who haven't been on the panel and will come in and be key starters on the team. I don't see those players in the Meath club scene

The players from 24 to 35 you interchange on a regular basis and it would make no difference and have no impact on the squad. But there is not 1 player apart from lads u20 still who have not been given a chance that would improve the first 15 or first 20.

Totally agree with you. And see someone wanting to change the best keeper we've had in years is beyond a joke.

They simply not there. The top 20 from last year will be the top 20 next year. Only exception would be if lavin returned which I hear he won't. And then someone saying change keeper. Ffs Harry is best keeper we've had in years

The panel needs freshening up and that won't necessarily be with better players or even players as good as those used by AMcE. COR'a task is to identify players that will fit perfectly into what he wants to do and make a team that is a lot better than the sum of its parts.

Agree 100% . Not saying we don't freshen up the panel but this narrative that is out there that No1 there are players out there who are better than what is starting for meath but they just haven't been given the opportunity to come on to the panel is utter nonsense No2 that trials are not conducted fairly and impartially is also utter rubbish. This has been spouted for years at all levels from minor up to senior and simply isn't true and just doesn't make sense . Why would any manager jeopardize the success of his team and indeed his own success by not picking players he knows are better than what are on the panel already. Reading your negative take on the standard of Meath football, I wonder why COR has bothered to take on the job, whats the point of the divisional matches if there is no chance of even one player coming through? Should he stick with same group, many of which have failed to produce time and time again,? No way did he committ based on panel of last few years, I believe he has seen potential and will give everyone a chance. Before the same old line of name them is trotted out, I know little about Meath club football at present, however, I do know its time for change, only so many chances can be given. To make statements that all available talent were on previous panel implies the posters have seen all teams, at all grades several times. Hopefully management can improve previous panel members who get another shot and combine with new blood sure to come in can make us a much better team.

What was negative about my take ? Apart from calling bulls**t on the whole "trials aren't done fairly" narrative.

Fire out a few names then of players who would improve the Meath starting team so. And remember we were talking about lads who have yet to be given a chance on a Meath senior panel.

If you could name them then why won't you? The panel does need freshening up if for no other reason than the enthusiasm and energy that a new call up brings. But I don't see anybody on the club scene who wasn't on a county panel last year coming in and playing a significant role for Meath next year. From non senior clubs I would say Adam McDermott, Sean Brennan, Michael Flood, David O'Leary (Kilbride), Daire Rowe, Frank O'Reilly and Killian Price would be worthy of call ups although I think atleast one of them was asked before and said no. But again I don't think they'd be playing straight away and would probably be borderline for the 26. But worthy of a panel call up

Thats the thing though. It's so easy for people to throw out the old line of "theres plenty of lads out there who should be playing for Meath and who would improve Meath but aren't being given the chance" But when people are actually asked to name all these players they can't Blackspot09 (Meath) - Posts: 1012 - 21/10/2022 21:44:21 2444993 Link 1 |
Out of interest, how does everyone think Meath will set up next season? With Eivers and Garrigan doing S&C and coaching, I would assume a very disciplined defensive structure and then counter attacking football using long kick passing. Somewhat like Meath under McEntee when we gained promotion from division 2 but more kick passing. I would be worried about the lack of a marquee forward or 2 for such a system with it likely to be Wallace, Frayne or Lynch who might struggle!
