...slightly off topic....but ...juts a big congrats to lar Wall, who i always felt .should have been in the ring when it came to the discussion on next Meath manager...he got imo, THE Best out of kells for years, and that is not a slight on the players, its a compliment to both parties, , but i think a really good manager who will know get some credit because he has landed a big one Thelongwoodslasher (Meath) - Posts: 403 - 11/10/2022 15:34:47 2443589 Link 2 |
I am hoping the regional championship will add a few more names. But I've been to a lot of games including a few at inter and junior and there's been very few new lads but their hands up. Daithi McGowan to me is the only one that I am thinking about differently in a Meath context after the championship he's had. Ronan Ryan is having a great championship and probably worthy of more game time. There were a good few guys who probably earned panel inclusions (Daire Rowe, Aaron Lynch, Sean Meade, Luke Mitchell). Looking forward to seeing Rian McConnell in the junior final as I've heard good things. But not many making a real claim LeitrimRoyal99 (Meath) - Posts: 1527 - 11/10/2022 16:08:51 2443593 Link 11 |
It's very difficult to stand out in the Meath SFC often the likes of Harnan, O Sullivan, O Reilly, McEntees x2, Jones, Conlon x 2, Walsh, Devine show flashes of what they can do but never light up a whole championship so if them guys can't do it what hope is there for someone who is not on the county panel. Not too sure why that is, perhaps it's down to good club management and being able to shut down the better players. I was talking to one of our lads after a championship game and he said the plan all week was go after their county lad "if he doesn't click, they won't click" and he was right we won with a bit to spare. Now that's great doing it against the likes of Cilles, Seneschalstown, Simonstown but if it's against Ratoath you can't do that as they have about 6 lads in with Meath or even Summerhill and Tones given there experience all over the park. Another reason could be the amount of senior teams who don't have a snowballs chance of winning a senior championship. In the next 5 years could anyone say O Mahony's, Seneschalstown, Moynalvey, Skryne, Cilles, Bracks or Curraha will win a senior championship? You could make a case for Ballinabrackey, Cilles, Skryne and Seneschalstown as some of them have had success at underage or competed at a high level consistently. I would like to try combine the regional championship with the Senior teams. Not sure how it would work as there would be 24 teams. Could look at 8 groups of 3, then quarters, semi and final. All done in 5 weeks UsernameInvalid (Meath) - Posts: 409 - 11/10/2022 17:36:38 2443614 Link 2 |
Seen more games this year than I have in long time. And unfortunately I am in agreement with you. Really apart from a couple of tinkering on the panel the team barring one or two will be the same. So let's hope Colm can get more out of them than Andy did for last couple of years.

Agree with a lot of your assessment there, I don't like that "go after the county lad" craic though. I've seen plenty of county lads past and present get some awful maulings because of their higher profile, it doesn't make for pleasant viewing. Important point about who can actually win the SFC, some of the bigger better known clubs such as NOM, Dunboyne, Simonstown, Seneschalstown et all are really struggling and could be looking to win an intermediate title in the next 5 years let alone a senior, add Skryne into that mix who got an awful hiding in the last 8 and Colmcilles who had a horrible championship and you see a lot of disappointments, realistically I think Summerhill and Ratoath have been a fair bit ahead of the pack this year and that's without Ratoath hitting top gear in my view. Ultimately I think we will see the regional teams compete in the SFC proper and I would have no major issue with that, the best viewing has often been in the JFC and IFC in Meath so if putting regional teams into the SFC improves its quality and out standing in general then I'd be all for it

That's pretty much it. Really in senior summer hill and rathoath are by far the best two teams this year and are a bit ahead of any the rest. It makes for a good final hopefully

The ball is firmly in Colm's court now. No one can say he's not giving it all. The blarney about no panel will be soon forgotten, this years panel will be the same as next years barring a few changes on the panel front , the team will be made up mostly of those that have played already. It's all about Colm tweaking the team trying new systems. Let's be honest division 2 will be a baptism of fire with Derry, Dublin Kildare clare etc. he will want promotion (although no one will be worried if that's not achieved) however it must be the objective. There is of course the worry of relegation in such a competitive group. However I will not even comprehend that as it would be a disaster. I can't wait for league to start. Way too long between county games. As always. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 12/10/2022 18:56:33 2443788 Link 0 |
Looks like the sponsorship with Devenish has ended and Meath will have a new sponsor in 2023. Most likely Bective Stud, but it also means a new jersey. Bit of a kick in the teeth for anyone who just forked out the €70 or so for the new one that only came out earlier in the year. hyperache (Meath) - Posts: 254 - 13/10/2022 14:50:19 2443854 Link 3 |
Yep. Bought 4 of them.

Indeed, very late in the year to find this out, can't understand why a new jersey was released last year if this possibility was on the horizon. Bective Stud could become the new lead sponsors but I wouldn't rule out a Kepak return given CO'R involvement, anyway a lot of counties have two sponsors so plenty of room front and back to earn money

This isn't new territory with oneills. Brand new Jersey released for final year of tayto Park sponsorship in spring 15 and then another new one in February 16 with devenish. The more annoying thing is that it's know now that the Jersey is changing. Oneills know this, but it's still 70e on their sore and will be in the run up to Christmas and will be sold off as the "new or latest" Jersey to people who wont know otherwise and then come January or February, all those full price Jerseys from Christmas are already old and replaced. Very cyincal stuff in the current financial climate Jinxie (Meath) - Posts: 6347 - 14/10/2022 09:37:53 2443931 Link 4 |
It's very difficult to stand out in the meath club championship at the minute because we have no stand out players. Simple as that. None of those players you listed are of county standard relative to what we have known as county standard from early 80s to late noughties. Most intercounty players stood out a mile in Meath during that time period. We can try make excuses for these lads, and the effort they put in is to be commended, but they just aren't good enough for intercounty if we are too push on. They are mostly top club players, but that's not what we need....what we need we don't actually have at the minute, at least not in the numbers we need of them. Sure some of them mentioned have done more this season, to exclude themselves from next year's meath panel , then stand out at club level.

Posts like this are disrespectful to the players referred to in the previous posts. A lot of these players do stand out in club games. Regarding comparison with players of the 80's and 90's there were some exceptional players in that era, but there were also some very ordinary players, who would not be effective in the modern game. In fact, with current refereeing a lot of them would rarely see out the 70 minutes.

He is right. We have lots and lots of really good club footballers but very few players that can cut it at the top level of inter county football as in Division 1 standard.

Our past players playing the modern game wasn't part of the discussion at all. Past players in their time stood out far more then the current players do in club games simply cause our standard of player was far better. And I don't care if you think I'm being disrespectful, I said I respect the effort they put, but I'm calling a spade a spade in relation to their ability. Most of them excellent club players.........., Most of them average to decent county players....no surprise they aren't standing out. Just because they pull on a county jersey they shouldnt automatically deserve protection from any sort of criticism.

I'm not been disrespectful. But Colm and Meath got the rub of the green. We avoided both dubs and Kildare in Leinster, and while absolutely nothing should be taken for granted. We have a great chance of reaching a Leinster Dina. So maybe our look is returning royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 15/10/2022 20:42:55 2444144 Link 0 |
We shouldn't be using O'Neils for a number of reasons which I can't print here re where the stuff is actually made. Also the quality of the material is rubbish and vastly over priced. There is a Meath based German/Dutch manufacturer we should be using. Otherwise plenty of other local (based in Leinster or Armagh) brands we could use.

Said that for years. O'Neils shouldn't be only ones we look at.
