Meath 20'S

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I just saw that Sligo won their first under 20's title tonight. It looks like they had 5 of last year's very successful minors starting on their team. Let's hope we come away with the win tomorrow night.

Team announced for tomorrow, very same as last Saturday wondering will there be any changes, are we just naming the same team for the sake of it then make changes before throw in?great to see David bell back in the squad he will be a massive addition and could possibly start, hopefully we get more out of our midfield this week and possibly move sean emmanuel back to midfield, need a big performance out of eoghan frayne and Diarmuid moriarty, does anyone know if Liam kelly is back after being out with covid? Adam McDonnell was very solid on the edge of the square last week would it be harsh to drop him this week? All in all hopefully get a good performance we should have no fear against the dubs as our last two minor teams have beaten them comfortably and we have a lot of players from them two teams on this one

Another unsuccessful year at this crucial age. 1 Leinster final in our last 21 attempts. Defensively so naive, following men out to the sideline leaving acres of space in the middle for the Dubs to play exactly how they wanted to and run direct at the goal. Continued to smack the ball long to midfield from kickouts despite getting absolutely destroyed on breaks. Nobody looked to go short, I think only once did somebody go down an kill momentum. We played an under 17 style of football, man on man everywhere, just win your own battle. The Dubs played an adult style, clever off the ball running, defending the most dangerous area not just your man and they played with adult power compared to us, constantly brushing aside our tackles. Despite this it isn't all negative like it was in 2020. We did seem somewhat dangerous in attack even without Moriarty when we got it up there and Frayne looks a real top player. 9 of the starting team are under 20 again next year along with 3 subs. And you'd hope some of the 2021 minors are ready to go then too. Crucial for next year is that we have to figure out who our corner backs and our 6 will be. McCarrick was the best of the full back line yesterday but he's full age next year. Let's hope these players can show good form for their club and push on because despite the result there is some talent there.

Was the game and this is exactly right Leitrim, played an u17 game and got destroyed by adult football. Pulled wide and Red Sea opened. There is a lot of talent there and a lot hugely disappointing I think with proper coaching it's a close game, not dissimilar to last year. It's a disgrace we are letting talented lads down with naive coaching.

Frayne looked top class and really stood out both leadership wise and creativity, some lovely passes. We didn't seem to know how to get Emmanuel into the game and often ignored his runs. He was probably our strongest runner with the ball and man able to break tackles. Cleaned out at midfield as we had no one around it. Oisin came on and stood out too, loads of time and had his head up.

absolute madness last night.....ive been posting all week about this Group, and wondering about the Management after seeing the Longford game...but any questions i had were blocked. ...for what reason i could not tell you
We are on here giving out week in week out about Andy Mc & the Seniors .....and some of that is merited.....but the set up of this group rules out so many of the management guys associated , from any further involvement once Andy is replaced.... last night was terrible

I agree, very disappointing but hopefully there can be lessons learned for the team going forward.

They started so well and really should have got a goal on the very first attack. Not sure who it was that got through but there was another player totally free in front of goal. Dublin got through the middle way too easy for the goals and I thought that kick passes from the Meath players was poor at times. Dublin were hugely effective on he Meath kickouts and got most of the breaking ball.

A bit of an improvement toward the end bu the damage had been well done.

A review needs to take place of this particular team and performance. I am no expert but there must be particular dynamics for under 20's in particular. We have two winning minor teams now coming through. Let's hope that a review will identify what needs to happen to ensure that next years team is as prepared as possible.

Was completely wrong about the standard of Dublins football. Totally outplayed everywhere. Their 14 and 11 in particular. Most worrying is that the naivety of our play was there for all to see. That's not the fault of the players. Moriarty wasn't playing and wasn't present either suggesting whatever was wrong it wasn't an injury. Freyne was good but he was in the half back line- no benefit to the team. Not his faultGray was dropped and reintroduced inside the first half without any discernible change in game plan. Not his faultBell brought into the panel and not introduced when Finnerty was being steamrolled was hard to understand We did ok in the second half after Dublin had finished the game and had rung in the changes if this was league and score difference was necessary we weren't getting more than 6 scores in the game. The progression plan from minor to senior should implicitly have improvements in managerial experience and ability. The current plan has the present management there next year.

Definitely. I'll be honest I'm seriously worried about the quality of people we have at management levels in county. Honestly the set up last night was shocking

Couldn't agree more. Didn't get to game but watched it. It was like the sideline were managing a u12 club game.

That was really depressing last night, to see a team I had real hope in play in such a hapless way in the first half was soul destroying, both our underage teams gone early doors now, 22 years next year since our last provincial title at U21/20 and just one final appearance in that time, that really is shocking stuff

Management very poor, didn't look structured at all, played such a poor brand of football. Adam McDonnell only player that showed a bit of fight to try get his team mates going, frayne kicked a few nice points and a constellation goal, team very young which is worrying lack of full age players

Guys can i ask a question? Why was Josh Carolan at six? played all his underage football in midfield and as the attacking player too. Plays half forward for Simonstown so who thought it would be a good idea to put him at 6? 6 is such a specialist position and requires a huge amount of discipline, ability to read the game and know when and where to be.

Look i didn't expect much from this team, weren't they also knocked out the first round of Leinster minor too by this Dublin team? For me it's about all the players on it who are still there next year and ensuring that they're properly ready for playing the right kind of game. I saw someone mention 9 of the starters are available for next year and its understandable that they'd be knocked out now. They were playing a team mostly a year older than them and in some cases two in Emmanuel, Kelly and Corbett case.

with regard to the Young lad at 6 You need to ask the management that. And i think that is broadly what most posters are referring to this morning regarding their disappointment....and near horror ..of what they saw last night.
Now ...im not going to refer to the point that "its about Next years players"...cause there would be just no good if i started down that wormhole ....i'll try and answer some of your points Brian in separate response to the Boylan question

What exactly were posters expecting?
Most of the team underage again next year , playing dublin.
You would think they lost to louth by some of the posts online.
They will be much bigger and better next year and then id expect to challenge for leinster.
Were we honestly expecting a win?
The pressure and expectations / abuse thrown at lads playing for meath now is very unfair at nearly all levels , at least the guys on the senior team are men and should be able to take it.

Definitely agree. Carolan at 6 was a strange one, they tried Oisin Martin at 6 in a league game too and that also didn't work at all. I think ideally Aaron Chinchilla would have been the 6 but to be honest we probably didn't have one. It's crucial we solve that next year and it'll probably be up to John O'Regan. And you are correct 9 starters underage against next year, and then you'd expect a few more of the 2021 minors to be ready. But it will be a learning curve. Adult championship will hopefully bring them on, and if we are to do anything at this level the S&C of the guys still available next year must improve as you'd expect it to. What annoyed me was that we didn't lose through just talent or power, we lost through game intelligence which maybe comes with experience but can also come with coaching. I don't think we should throw the baby out with the bath water. I like the progression of the manager from minor to 20's (as much for the managers progression as the players), but we must learn from it and if we do we can come back next year and make an impact on this grade which is an absolute must next year given the 2020&21 minors will be the older 2 ages

It's amazing how people are on here now talking about the standard of the manager, when only a couple of months ago they were lording him and predicting he would be the next man to take over from McEntee.

Frayne kicked a few nice points when the game was long over. The full back line got no protection, felt sorry for Ciaran McCarrick who tried hard but could do nothing only foul his man. The tracking back was so poor I thought I was watching an U10 game.
