Replying To Blackspot09:  "Spoke to a lad in work who was involved with Laois Senior management a few years back and asked him about this practice of naming a team then making 2 or 3 changes on the day because it is a bugbear of mine also and this was his explanation.

The thing about the changes to the team named in the programme is that the program team has to be in to the GAA by Wednesday night or i think it is Thursday afternoon at the latest for the programmes to be printed up and ready for the weekend .

Generally the management don't sit down to pick the team until after the last training session of the week which would normally be on Thursday or Friday night . There is probably always 2 or 3 spots that are up for grabs with a few lads fighting for them so of course the team might change from the one given in for the progamme .

Also quite often you might have lads who are carrying an injury and are touch and go if they can start and you want to give them as long as possible for the injury to clear up so you name them in the team and hope by sunday they are good to go. Sometimes they will be sometimes they wont be.

Makes sense to me when its laid out. I genuinely don't think teams are doing it to try and get one up on the opposition or some kind of edge I just think they are being asked to submit a team in the middle of the week before they have actually picked the team for the weekend.

If a management team are being asked to submit their team on a Wednesday or Thursday and they haven't actually picked the team it is no surprise there is a few changes to starting team so maybe we should get away from the practice of asking them to submit teams midweek.

My solution would be to have squad numbers for the season. Have them all printed in the programme and us fans can tick a box beside the starting 15 for each game when it is announced before the game starts.

Anyway just thought you might be interested in this. I was because the team changes annoys me but now I understand the main reason behind it I totally get it."
Yep I'd agree re: the squad numbers.

I can never understand people getting up in arms over changes to a line up of a team themat was named 3 or 4 days previous... What do you expect.

Look at soccer line ups, 60mins before kick off, yet their program is printed days in advance. Very simple with squad numbers.

And before anyone starts referencing Dublin not making changes over the past few years.... When you've won so much, with such a settled team, there will always be very little changes. It's the teams chasing that are doing the chopping and changing

I agree . And Dublin do make changes as well. Maybe not as many but they have done it also down the years.

Didn't Meath county board bring in squad numbers for club games for 1 of the years recently and printed a programme with all the clubs squad numbers so that supporters going to the games knew who everyone was and what number they were wearing? I thought it was a good idea. Not sure if they did it for 2021.

I didn't know you could get a game called of because of injuries, must be a new phenomenon. Meath won't lose any sleep over the game not happening anyway. Three games in seven days is a joke anyway.

I know what you saying but it's often 2/3 totally different sets of players. It's good to give them a run out in front of a crowd and see how they can cope. We always find one or two to add to the panel for league.

Anyone know if there is a list of current panel members? I've no idea who is on panel other than a couple of players not involved (including our best fwd).

Sad to hear about Mickey Newman retirement. All the best Mickey you gave everything for the county. Thank you.

Correct and right. Our best forward just retired, pity his whole career from underage was blighted by injury. A class act on and off the pitch who we probably never saw the best of in the green and gold.

Best wishes in retirement Mickey and hopefully the black and red only benefits from this call.

Heard there is 40 + members that will be narrowed down as the year progresses.

Seamus Lavin is the only notable absentee from last year's panel with the Dunboyne man gone to Canada for a year.
McEntee has added Longwood's Billy Hogan, Wolfe Tones' Saran O Fionnagain, Rathkenny's James O'Hare and Ratoath's Gavin McGowan to his panel, but the core of the group remains intact . Info taken from interview with Andy Mac in this weeks Chronicle.

I thought Aaron Lynch was added as well. Doesn't seem like it based on the above.

I would assume that Lynch is still with Trim as they've the Leinster final next weekend.

Maybe he will be in when Trims Leinster campaign is finished? He still needs a lot of S&C work before he is near ready to start or be an option off the bench for Meath. Didn't exactly stand out for the Meath U20's in February 2020 against Dublin, but in his defence the entire team was very poor that day. Not their fault either as the thing was only cobbled together the week before Christmas in 2019.

Not having a go here Joe, but I'd be considering his current form, more than an underperforming U20 game from 2 years ago. Lynch was the stand out performer in the intermediate championship in the season just finished. S&C is something they'll always be working on.

He deserves to say least start a game or two and see if he can do anything. But as we've all been honest enough to admit this is Andy's last year, short of a miracle... So there won't be much of any change at all.

And unfortunately I think by the end this season we could be right back where Andy picked us up after Micko's reign.

Luckily I think we've a great couple of minor/U20 trans coming through who've beaten Dublin at underage level, who won't fear the jersey before a balls thrown in.

Looks like tomorrow's game will go ahead and we'll get our first look at Meath for the year. There's a full round of Sigerson cup on Tuesday and Wednesday so I doubt Shane Walsh, Matt Costello, Cathal Hickey, Ethan Devine and maybe 1 or 2 others will play. Should be a chance to get a look at Billy Hogan, James O'Hare, Saran O'Fionnagan and Gavin McGowan. From what I've heard I don't think Menton came back at the same time of the rest of the squad and took an extended off season so he probably won't play O'Byrne cup and Jones is injured so he probably won't play it either. Anybody heard anything else?
